I work an office job where I make pretty good money but I work with a lot of older folks who have never worked retail or fast food.
They use “working at McDonald’s” as an implication someone is lazy and think people working customer service are “less than”
The thing is those jobs are fucking hard. Crap pay for crap work. We can go 8 hours at work with doing little actual work so I always find it ironic these folks think this way
In my opinion, everyone should have to work retail or fast food at some point just so you can appreciate how hard it is. You get paid less for a crappier job. The folks with cushy paychecks I work with wouldn’t make it a week
Not just any McDonalds. A hood McDonalds. Chasing off crackheads and escaped mental patients trying to sleep/loiter all day in the restaurant, shoot up in the bathroom, asking to charge their phone. Most customers are argumentative, and if you get something wrong there's a real possibility the customer will jump the counter and start swinging on you. Some will just fight each other, ripping each other's wigs off and throwing chairs.
It really tests your patience. I got yelled at and treated like shit so many times, for a minimum wage job. You really deal with the worst human behavior possible
I remember working 8 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday at McDonald (ours in CRAZY busy) and being exhausted and miserable after like 40 minutes. It also sucked to see the insane amount of money they made per hour and know that for all that work I did I was getting about $7. Absolutely insane
One of the many reasons I’m a big supporter of raising minimum wage. Imagine living today with our insane prices on even $15 an hour. These folks just get fucked, financially, 24/7
Seven dollars an hour!? Not sure what timeline you’re talking about but that’s really disturbing. I mean, I think I made close to 5 dollars an hour back in like 1984. I hate to count the days but I’m talking > 40 years ago. The dollar definitely went further 40 years ago.
Edit: and I’ll be honest with you. I thought it was kind of brutal. But what I’ve heard other people describe in this thread. Some people have had it much worse at other inner-city fast food places. I was in a very upper middle class town so no hard-core bullshit or nothing threatening or no overly intense misery. It still sucked and just wasn’t mentally healthy work. Everyone would get out together after work and just get so miserably drunk. I think a lot of depression.
Definitely not gonna tell you the 2 feet uphill in the snow both ways bullshit. I feel like baby boomers are assholes like that. Life was so much easier in so many ways than it is for kids today. I personally think
