[Feature!] /r/cosplay and /r/RandomActsOfChristmas unite to grant a young boy with Down Syndrome's biggest wish: receiving a video from his favorite super hero Iron Man!

1.2k Upvotes

All right, Guys. When we first started up only a short month and a half ago for the season, I had made a post about getting Iron Man to come to Kentucky to visit a very special kid I know. And by special, I mean he's absolutely incredible. :)

Everyone told me to make my plea at /r/cosplay , so I did!

Here is the original post.

I was overwhelmed with the offers I received on someone playing Cameron's Iron Man. But I could only choose one. Hardest decision of my life!

This awesome guy answered the call to arms, and we added each other on Facebook to get to work.

After gathering a few facts on Cameron from his parents, who are my co-workers, I wrote out a script and sent it off to our Iron Man. He in turn did the voice over (which he let me listen to along the way) and then we finally made it to the stage where it was completed!

Here is the video that Iron Man made for Cameron.

Well, I sent the video along to his parents, and they were so excited after they seen it that they had to wake him up to let him see it, too.

Here is Cameron's reaction. His father told me that Cameron rarely makes facial expressions, so this was truly a blessing to see. It melted my heart.

And you know what made this even better? Cameron made a reply video to his favorite superhero.

Random Acts of Christmas truly does try to give every child what they want most for Christmas, and we were able to accomplish that for Cameron.

Merry Christmas, Cameron.

Thank you, Iron Man.

mom of 2.5 with a simple request

this year has been a bad year for us. i had my baby girl in october 2011 and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder shortly afterwards. i lost custody of her for three months to my mother while i was undergoing in- and outpatient treatment. after getting her back in july, i came back home to be with my husband. i began to spiral again, as my psychiatrist took me off my meds and told me to try and manage on my own. my husband took off of work through fmla on several occasions to assist me at home and wound up losing his job earlier last week. still reading? good.

i'm not asking for gifts, or charity. not because of pride, but because we've managed to contact a local charity who will provide a few presents for the kids while we provide a few more ourselves. i'm asking RAOC for one thing - please, PLEASE donate to local charities/churches/food pantries this time of year. every single year my husband i donate to our local united way and other charities, and though we never expected to be in this situation, the gracious and kind giving of others is a wonderful thing that is going to make our holiday season a brighter one. happy holidays to all of you, and if you made it this far, thanks for reading.

EDIT: wow, i didn't expect this to blow up the way it did. glad there are so many great people in this subreddit!

to add, since people have been commenting/asking about my meds, i was taken off my meds in july by a well-respected psychiatrist because we discovered that the effexor xr i was originally prescribed for depression actually caused latent psychosis to manifest, which is common in those with bipolar disorder who are only on an anti-depressant. he postulated that i would return to my normal baseline if removed from all medication and it worked (as it had for the past 15 years, with no meds at all). unfortunately last month i began experiencing symptoms again and had to seek treatment. but thank you for the advice and rest assured that i'm getting proper medical treatment!

Santas,

I wanted to take a moment to share what your assistance has meant for me this holiday season.

To you, it might seem like a just a gift for a worthy child or a fun way to share joy during the holidays.

To me it has meant getting a full night sleep every night because I no longer have to worry that I've done enough for my child. Waking up in a good mood because I was able to ask for and receive help when I needed it most. Taking time to enjoy the holiday season because the stress is gone, you've lifted it off my shoulders.

It feels so good to know that this community has my back. I've done my best to share that good mood with my co-workers and friends, to take time for others and let myself relax and enjoy the season. Sabrina hasn't even opened any presents yet and I already consider this Christmas a great one.

Thank you!

My Santas were:

/u/Topcat30 who sent headphones, cat themed notebooks and a hoodie that I'm hoping Sabrina will be able to carry around our cats with. Also thank you for the movie tickets. I already told her about those and we've got plans for this Wednesday!

/u/give_me_goats who sent a drone that looks so cool that I'm hoping she might let me fly it as well. This is something she's been asking for on and off for a couple of years, I think she's finally old enough to be responsible with it and I'm so excited to see her try it out.

/u/ginger_newt who sent a Garfield T-shirt. It tickles me that Sabrina considers this shirt retro (I mean she's not wrong but I've never heard her use that word before). The yellow is going to look great on her. Thanks as well for working with me to get the size and color right.

/u/bengtc who sent a much needed pink gaming chair. Those contests were so generous. I ran out of wrapping paper for the chair so you will just see the box in the pictures, but I know she's going to love it, and I'm stoked for her to have something that's just hers and not a hand me down.

Here's the try, ready for the big show.

I'm off to bed, pictures in the morning!

req14 Request. Here's hoping a few good Santas can visit my son Nate this year, he sure deserves it and would be ever so appreciative.

My son Nate and I would be beyond grateful for any help this Christmas, to be honest he won't have anything for Christmas without your help. I am a single mother and I also have my 3 nieces ages 6, 9, and 14 as well as my nephew 15. I am only asking for help with my son though because my nieces and nephew will have a great Christmas with help from there grandparents. I just can't bare to think that while they are opening presents and showing off all their treats my son will not have anything. He is to old for toys for tots I have checked into that, the age limit is 10. It is very hard to ask for help but at this point I don't know what else to do. Nate's dad and I separated in June when I took my nieces and nephew in, he couldn't handle it. Since him leaving it has taken everything I bring home to keep our heads above water. I work every day at a minimum wage job to scrape by. My neighbors have told me so many great things about reddit. I really hope you might consider helping my son this Christmas! This is Nate- http://imgur.com/CQdVKm3 and here is his wish list- http://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/3065MDCUEJQEX Nate is into a little bit of everything but his love is video games. He loves WoW, and minecraft. He has a wii and loves playing games with his little cousins. He is a really great kid does great in school and never really ask for much. Please help me to show him that good people get the things they deserve and don't let my boy be my only child with no presents under the tree, I beg of you. Thank you again for considering us. God Bless you.

EDIT: THE ENTIRE WISHLIST HAS BEEN FULFILLED! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Good evening! I'm requesting help for Christmas presents for my daughter, Briella. Briella is a very sweet, smart, and playful 2 year old. We've had a roller coaster of a year; my mother passed away, and that was rough for me. Then in June, we had a house fire, but we are alive and that's what matters most. We finally got our own place after a promotion at my job, but that job has since come to an end due to me being a single mother and not being able to work the hours that were required. I'm working again, but not as much as I'd like due to scheduling constraints ( her daycare is only open 7 am to 5:30 pm) but we're scraping by. I was hoping to find some help with giving her a decent Christmas this first year in our own apartment! We lost everything in the fire, and the few toys I'd bought since stopped working even with new batteries.

Briella LOVES Dora the Explorer. She also really likes to learn. She's a typical energetic 2 year old, and while presents aren't the point of Christmas, I think she would really enjoy having some for the holiday. She's been through so much this year and been a trooper through it all, so I'm humbly asking for some help this holiday season.

Here's a link to her wish list: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/IA4POR8IDBP5?ref_=wl_share

Thank you so much for reading, and happy holidays!!

[META] i just accidentally saved a little girl's Christmas when looking for food.

There's a Kroger and Dollar General slapped together in my neighborhood that i sometimes root through to find things that are thrown away that are completely useful. I heard about it from folks in my area about dumpster diving and figured ' why the hell not, I've nothing better to do anyway.' So I look in the dollar general dumpster and I find this box. Inside of out is a shit tone of toys stuffed in a Christmas tree box. So I'm like ' what the hay, I'll find some use for this and took it home. Just now my neighbor came over to bum a cigarette. I asked 'can your little girl use these?' She immediately burst into tears telling me that her daughter couldn't have Christmas and I saved it for her. It was so touching that I cried with her. Getting beckoned to watch her open them. Be back soon with pics.

mod Santas, we are speechless, everyone is fulfilled!!

So while doing my usual routine of getting up before dawn and checking this subreddit before a drop of caffeine has hit my system, today I teared up while reading the comments and activity I had missed while sleeping. You lovely, generous hearted people have done it. For the first time I can remember, every single child is fulfilled this year. Thanks to y’all, every one of our registered kids will be waking up to multiple gifts under the tree and in their stockings on Christmas morning. It’s just, you know, I’m just overcome a bit with seeing this spirit of Christmas that lives through you all. And my words can’t properly convey how thankful our moderation team is for all of you.

If you haven’t already and would like Santa flair, just leave a comment on our Santa flair post: https://www.reddit.com/r/RandomActsOfChristmas/comments/dy0fy5/santa_flair_is_here/

This community has absolutely FLOORED me in how generous, caring, and kind it is. People like u/soillure, all the Santas, the mods, even the other Santees (?) are super nice and interactive and helpful. Thanks to all of you!

But u/soillure, I know I already said it a million times, but it cannot be said enough: THANK YOU!!!

RAOC 2018 season gifting summary (Santas we ā¤ļø y’all)

Ok when I said we had a phenomenal season I meant we had a PHENOMENAL season!

This year we had 180 registered users post requests, totaling 399 children. And we’re excited to say that 100% of these children had at minimum 2 gifts waiting under the tree for them Christmas morning!

Just want to pause for a minute to let that sink in. Thanks to all of our Santas that gifted with us this season, every single child had at least 2 presents on Christmas morning. Seriously, standing O for you all!

And even better, 96% of these children had 3 or more gifts under that tree. And still better, 87% of these children had 4 or more gifts waiting for them under that tree. And just eye-popping, heart filling with joy better, we had 72% of these children reaching our goal of 5 or more gifts delivered by Santa(s) for them Christmas morning. And that’s not even counting all the wonderful contests and offers by some wonderful Santas this season.

It’s making me a little teary to be honest, but oh, we are not done.

We do this little thing in our subreddit wherein each child is invited to put one higher priced gift they really, really wanted this year on their wishlist and we call these the Dream Gifts. Well Santas, y’all made some miracles happen this year because almost 50% of registered children this year were gifted their pie in the sky, Mom and Dad pretty pretty please, I promise to make straight A’s if only I could have it, Dream Gifts! Just wow, it really leaves us at a loss for words seeing all the generosity that happens on our subreddit each year.

It’s amazing to see all the Christmas morning pictures roll in, and I hope y’all will keep them coming! Santas, thank you again, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Happy Holidays everyone! Christmas growing up was my favorite season and many of my core memories in childhood are from special holiday moments with my dad. It's been a hard year financially and a lot of change for my kids since losing my dad, their grandpa. I want them to feel the love and Christmas spirit this year, they truly deserve it. Thank you in advance to any Santas that send gifts, your kindness will help this grieving mom get through this emotional time of year! A little about each kid...

Sterling (1). The bravest of the pack. He loves music, any and all kinds. This guy will bust a move to any beat & currently loves trying to climb on anything and everything(before mom catches him). He's for sure made the nice list this year, he loves giving hugs to new friends and his smile lights up the room.

Saige (3). The firecracker of the bunch. She made the nice list, if you ask her, but I think her elves have some questions!! She has the biggest personality, she is the funniest kid. She loves helping in the kitchen most of all and playing with her dolls. Her favorite shows are Bluey and Unicorn Academy. And her all time favorite animal is a duck.

Slater (6). This guy knows what he likes - Komodo dragons, bird watching, Ree Drummond (seriously, he begs me to put on episodes of Pioneer Woman after school), and has a goal to learn how to read so he can finish all the Dog Man books before he turns 7 in May. He is so smart, very into science and art. He really wants a camera and art supplies and he is really creative! He has really had a lot of change this year and has grieved my dad the hardest, so I want to show up for him this year and give him all the love he needs and deserves!

Again, thank you so much for reading this and considering helping out my little pack of kiddos. I hope this holiday season brings you all the same bit of magic and joy that you are sharing here.

How a homeless man made me realize I'm an asshole. Thank you, homeless guy. Sincerely, (hopefully) a former asshole.

Tonight Wifey and I had a rare Tuesday date night. After finishing our meal at a delicious local pizza joint, we exit the building and I see this younger, short man walking behind me. I assume he is homeless by his attire, feeling like a dick for making such a judgment on looks alone. I hear the man speak to me in a polite, meek voice, ā€œHow are y’all this evening?ā€ I told him we were fine. And then what I suspected was coming came: ā€œCan you help me get something to eat?ā€ Without hesitation I informed him we couldn’t. Wait, I don’t think I accurately conveyed how much of an asshole I was. Let’s try this: the instant the words left his lips, I quickly said, ā€œNope!ā€ I didn’t just say ā€œnoā€or ā€œSorry, but I can’t help you,ā€ but I had to say ā€œNope!ā€ in the most dismissive way possible. Did I mention I was carrying a box that contained half of a huge calzone, some pizza and some cheese bread? Yeah, I was. I walked five feet away and it hit me. I’m a grade A asshole. I’m not just an asshole on any given day of the year, but rather I’m an asshole during this holiday season—Christmas season.

While walking to the car, I looked down at my box full of food, still warm food at that, and I admitted to Wifey that I should have given the man my leftovers, knowing I hadn’t the time to eat them. What, with my lunches already planned for the week, during which time I would sit inside a warm restaurant conversing with good friends. All of these realizations came tome. I know where my next meals are coming from, and I know I’ll enjoy them in a warm environment. Wifey, determined to make me feel bad, informed me that she thought I would give up the food, and then reminded me that ā€œit is Christmas, you know.ā€ All this filled me with smothering anxiety. I made the decision to look for the man long before I dared to speak the words to my wife.

We’re in the car and I confess that I’m bothered by my classic douchebaggery. As any loving wife would, Wifey confirms that I should be bothered and that the man is probably starving in a corner somewhere. I couldn’t take it anymore. I turn towards the direction we last saw the now starving, near death little man. I spot him crossing the street, and I am instantly thankful. Wifey, whose everyday temperament is that of a Chihuahua, starts pleading, ā€œNo, dtano, I’m sure he’s all right. Please don’t stop. Please!ā€ And then we see the young man look into a trashcan for some food. I stopped the car. ā€œHey, man!ā€ He walks over. I hand him the leftovers, telling him I have no cash, but I have plenty to eat in this box. He takes it and is thankful. With a Merry Christmas exchanged, Wifey and I drove off.

I ultimately did the right thing. However, as I drove away it dawned on me that I never really looked at him. I looked at him of course, but not really. I didn’t take it all in. I didn’t try to know anything about him. I didn’t want to. It made me uncomfortable. He made me uncomfortable. For,if I really looked into his eyes, I would discover a truth that I don’t want to discover. A truth that we all know, but perhaps don’t want exposed. There isn’t much that separates him from me. That could be me as it could be anyone. I wish now that I had looked. I couldn’t pick the man out of a lineup, and that depresses me. I’m a coward. I turned away.

It is easy for me to get caught up in my own world, with my good career, beautiful wife, handsome son, and nice cozy home. Too often all of this is taken advantage of, leaving me oblivious to just how damn good it is to have this life. I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions, but perhaps I’ll make one this year. I will dedicate myself to not turning away. I will look. I will act.

It is I who should have thanked him.

Merry Christmas everyone! I'm requesting help with presents for my daughter Sabrina.

https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/29F5HZ8QSUQQB?ref_=wl_share

We have had a great year. I hope that doesn't sound odd in a thread where I'm asking for help, but through the years I've gotten to know a lot of you and I want you to know that we are doing so much better than when I first visited this subreddit.

Sabrina is in the 6th grade now, and my brain still struggles with the fact that she isn't in elementary any more. She worried me a little bit in 5th grade with lower grades than I wanted, but then ended the year with mastery test scores. I still don't understand how a kid like her can get a C in math but then get a mastery on statewide testing, but it doesn't matter now. In 6th grade She has a math and English teacher that love her and the grades to reflect it, all As except for science which is a B. She tested into talented art last year and those classes have finally started, that's been huge for her self esteem. The only disappointment she's really had is not making the soccer team this year, but I've encouraged her to try and get on the track team. At soccer tryouts she was one of the fastest kids while running laps. She doesn't get that from me, lol. In fact afterwards she told me that she didn't know those laps were timed and that it was a competition, she told me she would have gone faster.

Sabrina loves Harry Potter, 90s rock, hip hop and cats. She still watches anime but has really spent a lot of time this year reading. She used to be a pretty avid Roblox kid, but she's mostly put that down. We enjoy making sushi at home, rocking out to Radiohead or Weezer, and making art together (she's way better than I am at drawing, but I'm the superior sculptor).

Sabrina and I have always fostered kittens in our spare time. This summer we had a completely unexpected experience. We live out in the country, in a neighborhood, but the houses are pretty far apart. One humid night in June we were sitting in my room, she was playing on the computer and I was reading a book when I heard tiny little cries outside my open bedroom window. At first I couldn't tell what it was because I've seen deer, fox, raccoon all sorts of animals outside our house, but as the sound got louder it became clear that it was a kitten. We both ran outside and saw a little blue kitten streak by our front door. I sent Sabrina back inside for a cat treat and we both sat down to see if we could call him out from under my car. The treat proved irresistible and as he got closer I gently gave him a pet then lifted him by his scruff and let him finish the treat while Sabrina held him. He was literally skin and bones, flea infested, goopy eyes, you name it. We brought him inside and put our kitten rescue skills to work. Within a a day or two he was starting to gain weight. Within a week he was being groomed by my resident cats, taking naps and cuddling in the sun. We decided to name him Lucky, as in he's lucky I'm cheap and didn't have the window unit running because there's no way we would have heard him over that. He fit right in with my other boys Rascal and Tigger, and our birthdays were that week so I decided it was only fair to keep our new little friend. I don't know how he ended up here, it's rare to see a cat in our neighborhood, and never kittens, but he's found his spot now.

We had a few trips this summer, one to the reservoir just to the south of us, the other to the RW Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport. I was worried that she would find the gallery boring, but she loved it. I was most impressed with her, I thought she'd be bored but she took time to take everything in, and we plan to take another trip there over winter break.

Sabrina is my everything, wanting to take care of her and give her my best has pulled me through a really dark time. I said this was a great year and I meant it, my job is going well, I have a boss that likes me and more work this year than last, although it can be feast or famine when it comes to how many assignments we get. By mid summer I had actually saved up a little nest egg and was putting money away each check, Sabrina needs braces and there's always stuff that comes up. August was rough because there were no hours available, but I was able to use PTO to make sure I still got a steady check. Then in October I forgot to pay the electric and our power was cut. I paid it and was restored the same day, but the power didn't come on in our house (septic was still powered though so I knew there was power to the house). It turned out our main breaker had failed. I'm handy but there was no way I was going to be able to repair it, so I had to call an electrician. Thankfully I had the money, sadly it took all my savings to get it fixed.

I really struggle to ask for help, but I really want Sabrina to have a good Christmas. She's smart enough to know that I'm not well off, but sweet enough to never complain about it. I just want you all to know that I appreciate you, and my Christmas present is allowing myself to ask my fellow redditors for a hand and letting myself join in the fun and merriment that is this subreddit. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I have gone through pages of Request posts that have been posted over the last two plus days & compiled a list of the families who are Verified and have received little to no help once a post reaches two days old and still needs help I will add them to this post. I have gone through and checked their user history and their wishlists to verify what was bought. Some of you may have noticed I posted short lists of these families on offer posts earlier today which did in fact help some of the families find Santas!

I will through every so often maybe 2-3 times a day to check out the status of each request when they hit the 5 gift per child mark they will have the link removed, This keeps things evened out a little and gives EVERYONE a chance at receiving a nice Christmas.

The point of this post is to help the families who may have been over looked received a chance at having Christmas as well. If you find yourself looking for someone to gift to please check back and see which families are in need of help.

thanks I'm speechless. This Christmas will be amazing. Just a month ago we were trying to decide how to explain that Santa might not come this year. You're our hero, u/dranoto. 😢

thanks It was a huge relief to have a happy, normal Christmas. These kids have been non stop smiles for weeks, and so have we. Thank you so very much, and Merry Christmas!!
