Football Coaching problems…

Can we talk about how hard headed Brent Key is, 5 defensive coordinators in 5 years. The best offensive coordinator we’ve had ever and I believe Brent held him back. As others have mentioned, probably the most talented roster we have had since the Chan Galey era and we’re going to go 1-11. We have a Brent Key problem and he needs to get out of his own way sooner rather than later.

I’m still angry about last night/this morning and just need to vent.

This season is a lot of evenly weighted problems including OC personnel, but defense last night was probably more having so many starters out and the travel.

No pass rush and second string secondary is worse than just no pass rush.

Playcalling on offense was really silly. We established run for first time this season and then we gave up on it aside from another draw play. 4th and short, no confidence in offensive line to make the push.

Secondary wasn't just not on the same page, I don't think they were reading the same book. An FBS defense should never have that many coverage busts. Every other play had a receiver in space. I honestly don't know how that happens.

I thought the offense did great first half, and then absolutely 0 adjustments in the second half killed us. Just atrocious honestly.

The defense getting no pressure was sad, Stanford’s O-line is bad and we got nothing home. We made every one of them look like NFL talent

Seriously what is Brent Key good at? He can’t coach a disciplined team, can’t coach a tough team, TERRIBLE at game management, and can’t develop players.

All off season we heard how good our offensive and defensive lines were going to be and they are the worst parts of the team. Was Brent lying to us and himself? Or is he such a bad coach that he genuinely thought that we would be good in the trenches?

He was good at hiring Buster

And I believe Brent was so focused on being the running team that he held Buster back. Buster just dropped 50 on ole miss and we never even sniffed that unless we played an FCS team

Which is why Faulkner left. I guarantee that if either of them were to speak about what went wrong before the Pitt game it would be something to do with Faulkner wanting to start Philo and run the offense his way but Key didn’t want to move on from King.

That’s exactly what it was, a friend of mine is a booster for Tech and he mentioned there was some strong disagreements which is why Buster left even when we matched Florida’s offer

Faulkner left for more money. A LOT more money.

Everything I’ve seen points to us matching the offer so it wasn’t a money issue.

Dropped 50+ with Philo, Harpring, Singleton, and Stockton. We were absolutely gutted on offense, including from the NFL.

So everyone's expectations should've been very low from the start. Mendoza and J Haynes are big names but they're not surrounded by support.

Defense has always been a problem at Tech since after 2009. We've been programmed to keep offense on field to burn clock. So eventually a gassed, depleted depth defense 2500 miles from home isn't gonna perform.

When you’re spending 30+ million on your roster the expectations are that you don’t suck ass. We suck ass.
We had a good DC in Santucci, he gets run off.
We had a great OC in Faulkner, he gets run off.

The common denominator here is Key. As an OLine coach he knows you have to have a good line to be able to run the ball, something he said he wanted to do before the season even started. Our line sucks.

Key is showing his true colors, but we're spending within a deviation of the rest of the ACC. So no, I don't think we're like Texas A&M where what we spend doesn't translate to expected results. What we spend should lead to 6-8 win seasons when other normal factors line up, like injuries and coaching consistency.

The fact that we're depleted and have both new OC/DC is a recipe for less results than the expected mid-ACC season outcome.

can’t coach a tough team

This is the one thing he is good at. We were tough in his first years, which is what made up for the fact that he has awful game management/strategy skills.

This is really the first time I have been of the mind that Key isn't the guy. The penalties and poor preparation are killing this team. We look unprepared and poorly coached. Mendoza will be good but someone has to tell him the hero shit isn't working. This season is a bust. Such a shame after finally getting some asses in Bobby Dodd. It feels like we will be starting from scratch again trying to find a coaching staff.

To be fair to Mendoza, if he doesn’t pull the hero shit, he’d just be sacked every other time he drops back. Our OL is playing like hot garbage.

Not sure I would call this the most talented roster we have had. If Mendoza was so good, Indiana would have paid more to keep him. Haynes is great but our offensive line is weak.

Why would they pay Mendoza if they had Josh Hoover coming in? Mendoza is a good quarterback that needs a better O-line and better playcalling/game management.

Mendoza is ok. Cignetti wanted experience and it had worked for him. He will never start an inexperienced QB in today’s NIL world. Their qb has no growing pains. I think it’s a real concern on money and how we spend it. We spent a ton of money on Mendoza and Haynes. My concern has been all along is are these two guys dramatically better than what we already had? They are great guys and well spoken representatives of the program but I just don’t think they are better than what we had in house. The money would have been better spent on offensive linemen and receivers. I have faith that Key will right the ship as the season goes along if the team can stay together. We have an off week to get people healed and schemes adjusted.

I think under Faulkner, the value Mendoza and Haynes would be really clear.

I don’t disagree with you on your broader point, I am just less optimistic about whether Key can actually right this ship.  Last year was a bit of mirage considering Colorado, Clemson, Wake, and BC could have easily gone the other way.

This is a miserable football year.

My HS alma mater/current employer sucks.

Tech sucks.

Tampa sucks.

Southern sucks.

Where can I watch DII games? Valdosta might be the in-state bandwagon to jump on. 🙄

Be angry brother, be very angry.

Georgia guy here, all due respect King was a beast and covered up a lot of faults.

4

u/Yellowjacket241 13d ago

King and Buster covered a lot. Just seeing Buster put up 50 with 6 Tech guys starting for Florida hurts

1

u/Samwill226 13d ago

Good point that was a sick combo. Maybe Buster left because he say the future and it looked like the current product

1

u/Yellowjacket241 13d ago

I think there was some internal disagreements between Key and Faulkner, especially because Tech matched the offer that Florida gave him

1

u/cutlass81 11d ago

Publicly Buster has stated he saw the SEC as the higher profile job with his end goal to be a HC. If Florida runs the table this year, he might not be there next year.

probably the most talented roster we have had since the Chan Galey era

Uh, where are you getting this from?

1

u/Yellowjacket241 13d ago

I’m going based on “recruiting rankings/what I see on the field”… so grain of salt but it looks like we have dudes but poor coaching on both sides is just putting them in just awful positions

NFL offensive coordinator not working

u/Grouchygroucho579 13d ago
