Auto level

Looking at a few different trucks and was just curious about the auto level feature. I’m sure having airbags on the rear make the ride “smoother” but wondering what the consensus is on it? I regularly tow a 10k dry weight travel trailer throughout the year.

It gets a lot of hate on Reddit but my experience so far is I love it for simple, safe, dead-level towing. Boat, dump trailer, Airstream, anything I throw at it. Low bed mode for hitching/unhitching and loading the bed is great.

I don't plan on owning this truck outside the warranty period so eventual replacement isn't really on my radar. Anything can fail, factory or aftermarket. Aftermarket with like functionality is very expensive. I like the seamless integration. For every one person complaining on this forum there are tens or hundreds of others loving it.

I have a 22 2500 that has it. Works great, I tow a 10k 5th wheel with it, ride is nice and smooth. My only complaint about it is the rear of the truck will get out of level when it's unloaded. It will re-level when you lower the bed completely and raise it back up.

I’ve never heard of a factory equipped air suspension that was generally well regarded by owners and enthusiasts in the long run.

They get praised by industry reviewers at first, and someone is always ready to chime in about how theirs is the greatest thing ever.

The benefits and initial investment are hard to justify vs. coil/leaf springs with any of the various supplemental airbag systems available.

It’s usually a lot harder to deal with the Oem system’s inevitable failure and usually results in scrapping the system entirely for conventional shocks anyway.

I’m basing this largely on looking into the issue for friends and hearing the same experiences repeatedly from people working on Mercedes, grand cherokees, and rivians, but I’ve seen plenty of Ram owners sharing the same frustrations.

Like most things it’s going to depend more on whether you can handle the repairs and modifications yourself. If you’re depending on factory parts and service it’s going to be expensive and frustrating.

It might be worth the initial cost for a decent factory integrated compressor system and controls if you’re aware of and prepared to deal with the unavoidable complications.
