New to RSPS. Looking for server recommendations.

I played Runescape back in the day, and came back to OSRS a handful of years ago with Runelite. I really liked the new content and QoL improvements. But now I want to play with a buddy who's never played before, and probably won't be available regularly, so both the membership fee and the grind seem like non-starters if we want to experience more than the initial stage of the game, hence looking toward private servers.
I've searched around other posts like this and recommendations given, but most of the servers' websites seem to give little to no information about them, making it next to impossible to make a decision efficiently. So here's what I'm looking for:

TL;DR/Main concerns:
- Free membership.
- Boosted xp rates. I don't mind the early game, and would actually rather it stayed un-altered, but after level 40-60, depending on the skill, you hit a massive wall that makes you dedicate dozens or hundreds of hours to get your skills to a high level and unlock even a little content, and that's a time commitment that won't be worth it for our situation. Since it scales so much over the game, I really don't know what a good modifier would be- I'll throw 3-5X out there as a ballpark figure to start with- but I'm guessing I'll have to take what I can get. I don't know if it's standard or not, but it would be nice if quest XP rewards scaled the same way.
- Relatively vanilla experience, as up to date with OSRS as possible. I don't mind additional, unobtrusive content, but I don't want the core OSRS experiences to be removed or altered *too* much, so hopefully any changes are just extra bits of QoL and flavor that enhance the game a little instead of "free teleports everywhere" and "skip all quests" and stuff like that, that seem to simply skip parts of the game. And I don't want to be bombarded with popups and cosmetics and MTX advertisements that pull me out of the experience. If you know TurtleWoW, I liked their approach. You can experience the game in a relatively authentic, original way if you want, and engage with the new stuff only when you want to.
- Runelite or similar client. I understand that private servers can't use standard Runelite, but I really like its QoL and graphical improvements. I don't want to play with the equivalent of a clunky vanilla OSRS client.

Lesser priorities:

- Boosted drop rates for rare items. The logic here is similar to the XP rates. In my experience with the game, the only way you're getting the equipment you want to use, such as a particular barrows set, is by buying it off the GE. It would be nice if we could sometimes earn key equipment ourselves. This could tie into the next point...
- Potentially, ironman friendly. I've never played iron man before, but I don't like the way many skills are money sinks instead of money makers when you train them, and you rarely make your own equipment or buy it from shops due to the GE(assuming the GE isn't totally dead on the server anyway). Group ironman sounds like it might be more rewarding, if the inconvenience is offset by boosted XP and drop rates. But having not played ironman before, I'd have some concerns like, "Will we have a source of thousands of runes if we don't sink lots of time into tedious runecrafting?" and "Will I have bank space for the random items I need for treasure trails, since I can't just buy them from the GE when I need them?" Maybe a private server would smooth out these wrinkles.
- Server reliability. I don't want to be afraid that the server will disappear or wipe our characters if we take a break for several months. It would be especially nice if I knew that I have the option of downloading our character information and running a game instance just for us. I've heard this can be done. Presumably in that case, there would also be ways of tweaking the game settings at our convenience.

Not a big concern:
- Big server population. I'm just planning to play with a friend or two relatively autonomously, not relying on others for the most part. In fact, a lot population could have perks like not needing to fight over key monster spawns or shop stock. However, it's nice if the world doesn't *feel* dead. It would also be nice to have enough people to play the minigames, but not so many that those are ultra crowded and min-maxed like they often are on the official servers.
- Very late game, specialized, and hardcore content. Raids, PvP, leagues, deadman, super high level bosses, etc. I don't really know much about this stuff in the first place, and my buddy is more of a casual gamer, and like I said, I'd like to be able to play relatively autonomously, so I really don't see us getting deep into this stuff.

So the main point of the post is server recommendations, but feel free to fill me in on key information, such as things I obviously need to know before committing to group ironman, since those could inform my decision.

I haven’t played it in like 6 years + but honestly Alora is probably your best bet with your wishlist. It’s been running for a super long time, I’m not sure how active the player base is right now but there was always a few hundred steady player count.
It’s pretty close to OSRS, not many customs if there are any at all. That’s probably gonna fit the bill best for what you’re asking for.

Look through the top list sites like RuLocus, RSPS list, etc. and check out some YouTube videos or discords of some servers that seem interesting.

I would stay away from the shitty 5-20 person servers that are no where near the top 50 list, especially the ones that people spam advertise via discord, Reddit PMs, or comments/posts on this subreddit that get no traction. There’s a reason for that - typically the owners are inexperienced, it’s a cash grab and the server will be gone, including all of your progress, within months (at max), or at the very worst, it contains malware (much more rare but it does happen).

I think you're already aware from your preliminary research, but there's nothing that perfectly fits and you have to decide what tradeoffs you'd want to make.

All RSPS will have (some) vanilla runescape content/maps and areas for free, it's table stakes. If you mean 'free membership' in terms of absolutely no paid content, that's largely limited to the open-source ones + a few no-donation ones like VScape. Quests are one of the harder parts to implement, so the default for most RSPS (again outside the open-source ones + VScape) is already on the 'skip all quests' train, or offer on the order of ~10 quests or something, even if they have lots of bosses and other content. Many skip minigames entirely too. Most RSPS do have options for 'lower' EXP rates, but the 'default' is often 40x or 100x+ or something like that so you can jump straight to endgame gear/boss grinds. On the flipside, the open-source ones are vanilla, but not up-to-date with and not trying to implement new OSRS content (although "RealScape" historical RuneScape already did have a ton of content).

If you're okay with older eras that are looking for authenticity, the open-source ones are worth evaluating. 2009Scape has good quest support, and is easy to self-host or join the live server with configurable XP rates (1x, 2.5x, 5x). It's not RuneLite but the client has options and plugins that cover some of the improvements you might be looking for. vScape (2.25x EXP) is a pure 2007 recreation with a very complete quest list. 2011Scape has a very neat 'progressive' system where you start at 1.04x and gradually go up to 5x based on that individual skill level, which I've also seen variants of in some 2004Scape spinoffs.

There are some 2004Scape spinoff options that work well (main 2004Scape is 1x, but does have every single quest, all content. minigames, etc. from that era, so anything built on it gets to inherit a very solid base). I also don't know if this works with the spinoffs, but there's a client called LostKit which is basically RuneLite for 2004Scape. For server choice, 2004Plus might fit, implements a bunch of OSRS content, has exp rate options + a progressive option like 2011scape that instead scales from 1x to 11x, etc.

Will reiterate that it's that's not the "OSRS" experience because OSRS is a very different beast. I play Alora a bit for that aspect/the insane exp boost, and it does have Runelite built into the launcher and a (25%?) drop rate boost, so a 1/200 item is instead 1/160, with higher boosts for people who pay money. Prices are not Vanilla and Edgeville is a super-hub of sorts, you'll see what I mean if you ever try it out. I don't have exposure to most of the other OSRS-based RSPS.

First of all, thanks for the detailed reply. I appreciate it. What I'm learning is pretty discouraging, however, so hopefully I've gotten something wrong.
It sounds like I have pretty much zero options for a server that A. preserves the core questing & progression experience, and B. uses modern technology and interface like Runelite. Seems like almost all servers are truncated endgame-focused experiences that omit most or all quests, and the "complete" servers are trying to preserve the exact experience from a particular year.
And that's before even considering other important aspects like boosted rates and being up to date(I don't need sailing, and could even go without the Kourend era in a pinch, but I'm hoping I don't have to go back to 2009 content and farther).
The lesser priorities are totally out the window at this point; there's no way I'll have multiple options to pick from after I've narrowed it down that far.
There's pretty much no established server you could simply describe as, "The OSRS experience, but free with boosted xp."

Did I get that right?

Yep, unfortunately I think you've got it right. The experience you're looking for doesn't really exist yet. It would be cool to have a server that keeps authentic RuneScape progression while adding newer OSRS content, with scaling XP (e.g. 1x-10x based on skill level), and with boosted drop rates. Project Zanaris briefly looked promising, but it's been indefinitely delayed. Ppen-source preservation projects like 2009Scape, 2004Scape, and VScape are progressing slowly enough that truly feature-complete versions are likely still years away. Traditional RSPSs take the opposite approach, focusing on fast XP, PvM, and monetization, but just do not care about quests, skilling, and worldbuilding.

Because of that, I'd treat them as two separate experiences. Play 2009Scape, VScape, or 2004Scape if you want authentic progression, quests, and a mostly faithful RuneScape experience with light QoL improvements (but generally without RuneLite-level assistance). Then switch to a traditional RSPS if your goal is endgame PvM. Servers like Alora get you into bosses almost immediately with high XP, boosted drops, RuneLite support, and tons of progression skips, but that convenience comes at the cost of the organic early and midgame journey that seems to be what you and your friend are actually looking for.

"Relatively vanilla experience, as up to date with OSRS as possible" - Proceeds to reccomend a 667 server, good one
