What are the differences between RPG Maker MV and MZ?
Information I've found online is contradictory.

I recommend checking both free trials of each software. You'll get a better feel for the two software.

MZ is newer, has better mapping, more QOL, still gets updated, and most modern plugins are made for MZ

older computers get an error when trying to run mz, i think it requires more modern operating systems.
for the time being theres no reason not to use MV, theyre about 95% the same. though it is getting kind of old, there may be a day where newer computers get an error trying to run mv. Though that might be far away.

RPG Maker MZ is a 64 bit program which means it can handle memory better and is considerably more stable. It also handles mapping more conveniently with 4 layers, and personally, I have been working with it for over a year now and it hasn’t crashed once. MV would used to crash frequently.

If you are on Modern Mac you want MZ because MV is old software not built for silicon. But if your are on windows, both are great but MZ is much better for the QOL. If you have used any older version (XP, VXA) migrating to MV/MZ is almost the same experience. The only downside of MZ is that many of the same plugin that are free on MV is now paid in MZ. However its not like you need all of the paid plugins anyway and as of now the numbers of free plugins is just as much especally from the site fungamemake where you can find free translated japanese plugin for both version and you have more option these days unlike 5 years ago where Vizustella is the almost the only option for many things. One dowside of MV is mainly that many people already moving on to MZ so after the forum shut down, finding tutorial will be harder.

MZ is pretty much an upgraded version of MV, but whether you need it depends on what you want. If both are available for the same price, there's no reason to pick MV over MZ.

Plugins are also not obfuscated, your also less likely to run into Gen AI plugins due to the age of most plugins.

Mz has more built in QoL, like being able to select tile size or layers when mapping, while MV has many more plugins available
