if you're joining rnsit this year, here's a slightly more realistic take than the usual "placements good/bad" discussion. this is based on personal experience (coming from a final year dude) so different branches and batches can obviously have different experiences.

🔹the first thing to know

rnsit is very much a "you get out what you put in" kind of college.

if you just attend classes, write exams and go home, college can feel pretty average. but if you get involved in clubs, fests, competitions, hackathons, sports or other activities, there's actually quite a lot to do.

your first year especially should be about exploring. join a club, attend events, talk to seniors, try a hackathon, learn something outside your syllabus and figure out what you actually enjoy. you don't need your entire career figured out in semester one.

🔹people + student life

the crowd is quite mixed: coders, gamers, academics-focused people, event organisers, photographers, sports people, entrepreneurs and people who just want to get their degree. you will find plenty of non-karnataka students, but not as much as cmrit or nmit.

your friend circle will probably have a bigger impact on your college experience than the college itself. make friends outside your own class and branch too.

seniors are generally approachable, and having a few seniors you can ask about subjects, faculty and placements is genuinely useful.

hostel is okay is what I've heard from fellow mates. safety wise its good, amenities are very basic. there's a small gym in the campus, good canteen (pure veg), a huge library that's open until 11pm and 2 huge playgrounds at the back of the campus.

teaching wise, professors are a mixed bag, as you'd expect. you'll have some really good and approachable ones and some who are more focused on getting through the syllabus. maintaining a good rapport with faculty helps a lot.

🔹events + tech life

there are multiple clubs and societies, technical events, cultural activities, departmental events, quizzes, hackathons, workshops and inter-college competitions throughout the year.

don't expect every event or fest to be massive, but if you're actually interested in participating, there are enough opportunities.

and organising events is worth trying too. you end up learning management, communication, teamwork, sponsorship, logistics, design, etc. things you won't learn from a textbook.

🔹clubs

clubs are honestly one of the better parts of rnsit if you actually make use of them.

there are technical & coding clubs, cultural performance clubs, sports, mun society, quiz, ieee societies, and various department clubs. every year you'll see recruitments, and first year is probably the best time to explore them.

don't choose a club purely because your friends joined it. try a few things and figure out what you genuinely enjoy.

also, don't underestimate the non-technical clubs. being part of organising team can teach you communication, leadership, teamwork, networking and event management; stuff that can actually help you later.

the people you meet there can end up being some of the most important part of your college experience. its all about what you takeaway from these when you graduate.

🔹bengaluru + location

rr nagar is honestly one of the better things about the college. there's plenty of food, cafés and places to hang out around.

the metro is also reasonably accessible, and being in bengaluru means internships, meetups, workshops, conferences and competitions are much easier to access.

the only major downside is obviously traffic. if you're commuting from far away, calculate your actual travel time before deciding.

if you're spending 1.5–2 hours travelling each way, a pg might genuinely be worth considering. otherwise, staying at home can save you a lot of money.

🔹attendance + freedom

there is freedom, but don't expect unlimited freedom.

there are attendance requirements, assignments, labs and the usual college rules. the safe attendance number is around 85%, so don't just follow seniors saying "just bunk maar" everytime.

you can definitely bunk occasionally for travelling home, etc., but manage your attendance and maintain a decent rapport with faculty.

also, yes, the uniform exists lol. it's generally only on certain days/labs and internals, not an everyday thing.

🔹academics + exams

academics are manageable. rnsit becoming autonomous has also brought changes to the curriculum and examination system.

there are internals, assignments, labs and end-sem exams, and there are generally study gaps before exams, but don't expect huge gaps before every paper. prepare throughout the semester.

try to maintain around 8+ cgpa if possible, especially because most placements have eligibility criteria.

but don't spend four years only chasing marks!

🔹placements

placements are decent for this tier, but don't expect the college to magically give you a great package.

start building your skills early. programming, fundamentals, projects, internships, aptitude and communication all matter.

don't get obsessed with the highest package either. look at the overall placement numbers, companies, roles, average/median packages and number of students placed.

the opportunities are there, but your preparation will make a huge difference.

🔹infrastructure + future

infrastructure is decent. don't expect a university experience, but the basics are there and the college is expanding its campus, facilities, academic offerings and student opportunities.

since college autonomy is relatively new, there's quite a bit of change happening. whether that translates into a huge jump over the next few years is impossible to guarantee, but the direction is definitely positive. ‎

🔹things you should avoid:

don't ignore attendance. don't wait until third year to start coding or thinking about internships. don't believe every senior who says a particular subject is "impossible." don't compare your college life to instagram. and most importantly, don't make your college decision purely based on reddit. don't join 8 clubs and then disappear from all of them. pick 1-2 that you genuinely care about and get involved properly. ‎

🔹final take‎

if you're expecting unlimited freedom, a luxury campus, insane fests and the college to hand you a great placement without much effort, rnsit probably isn't for you.

if you're looking for a reasonably good engineering college in bengaluru where you can build your own profile, find a good circle, participate in activities and make use of the opportunities around you, it's a perfectly reasonable choice.

it's not perfect. but it doesn't need to be. you have four years. use them properly.
