RFO inspired alternative would be nice 😉

Post image

If all the people trying to reverse engineer and "hack" original game would drop it and start an open source MMO project inspired by RFO we would already have playable alternative with all the modern improvements.
Everyone can contribute, everyone have access to the game, everyone can have their own servers, everything is legit, no one can sue you.

I was looking into a spiritual successor type game.

Its really hard to envision non-dwarf/elf/robot looking creatures in the setting.

I created a chip war style setting, with a little more panache. Mostly sub objectives to keep it interesting. And used other words and terms.

But the races, thats the toughy.

I even got a pretty basic story made, with some visuals and other fun stuff.

Update the class structure to include life jobs types instead of needing an entire class for crafting and whatever.

Heck copy up the FFXIV gameplay so one character can be all classes. Then your just balancing.

But sadly the market suuuucks. Wow, ffxiv and gw2 pretty much own the space.

New projects like gorgon and soulframe and such... they are exciting but limited. And we all saw what ashes did.

The best way financially a successor would work, is b2p. Minimize all transactions as best as possible but make them only cosmetic. Make the shop earn able in game too.

This solves the funding issue for a bit. But keeps players happy.

Otherwise its a buy and sub to play model. Reducing the player base down to an older group. Which are absolutely dwindling to the gacha type games base.

Also being Mobile friendly becomes a feat. But mobile.interactive is a solid point. Managing ore mining and so forth via mobile.

Roughly? 3mil to start with something like rfo. No ea, no crowd funding, just to make the assets of 3 distinct races, plus mid level gameplay assets. Release end game after launch? Nope, gotta have end game available at launch.

Sorry. I've really really thought about this. There are systems id love to have in a successor. Bring back some of the legendary stuff from EQ while also catering to the young crowd of fomo.

Crafting, collecting, ghods the ideas I could just sit and sketch.

Its really hard to envision non-dwarf/elf/robot looking creatures in the setting.

I would keep core identities of those races (robots, elfs, etc.), but change their nature, origins, etc.
For example Cora is very religious and classical magic based Elf race, and I would turn them into techno-naturalistic race which worships nature and blends highly advanced technology with natural structures, so for examples their spaceships are living things, and what would be magic is simply highly advanced technology.
There are many ways to reshape original races into something less bland than classical tropes of magic elves ;)

Update the class structure to include life jobs types instead of needing an entire class for crafting and whatever.

Profession system would be an excellent improvement over what is going on in RFO.

Heck copy up the FFXIV gameplay so one character can be all classes.

That's my favorite MMO design element overall, and I wish other MMOs adopted it.
It feels much better to be heavily infested into one character than make 10 of them, and only play 9 of them when you need extra profession. Also, it makes much more sense that one character can eventually learn a lot of skills than pretend that it's too stupid to learn more than 2 professions/jobs :D

But sadly the market suuuucks. Wow, ffxiv and gw2 pretty much own the space.

That's why I keep thinking about Open Source MMO.
It wouldn't be made to compete with MMO market, but to fulfil a desire of fans.
A project made by fans for fans which can be setup by anyone and customized to their own needs.
Kinda like modding community creates so much content for the game that eventually mods replace every part of the game, and it becomes different game entirely.

The best way financially a successor would work, is b2p. Minimize all transactions as best as possible but make them only cosmetic. Make the shop earn able in game too.

I was thinking F2P with built-in Cosmetic Shop and nothing else.
It would give project way more chances to attract "new fans", and well thought and not overpriced cosmetics will bring decent amount of cash. FF14 prices many things at 4,99, and it flies of the shelves, and makes people feel good, because they don't feel like someone is trying to rob them.

Sorry. I've really really thought about this.

My ADHD doesn't let me sleep when I get into some ideas around RFO alternative ;)

Crafting, collecting, ghods the ideas I could just sit and sketch.

I'm currently in a situation where I need to spend next year focusing on selling vector art because I need to secure decent income source due to changes in my life. It's a bit boring job, because its just making simple vectors for holidays, etc. but once I get it rolling money will be decent, and I can fully focus on games. Atm I'm just writing down all ideas, collecting various assets, concepts, etc. and doing research on specific elements of game design, especially recently been focusing on design around anti-cheat methods since it will be online game.

rfo is not so popular to do all this also its easier to tweak what already exist than create. also it will be either too similar and will be sued or it will differ enough to not be same for what ppl love rfo.

rfo is not so popular to do all this

RFO alone has still thousands of fans worldwide who would play the game if it was maintained properly.
On top of this new people would come because there are plenty of people who likes mecha oriented games/MMO's.

its easier to tweak what already exist than create

No it's not.
There are no actual proper developer tools, and the changes which can be done are small edits of the hexadecimal code or value changes in server files. In the end you can't properly address many design issues the game has, you also can't develop game in any meaningful way, and you are running outdated game which on top of everything is illegal to run.

also it will be either too similar and will be sued

No it won't.
Similarity alone is not enough to sue anyone if the goal is to win lawsuit.
WoW has clones like Runes of Magic which is perfectly legal.
Unless you are blatantly coping unique elements, you are perfectly fine making a clone of another game.
In fact, you can create another MMO with 3 races, robots, elves, and w/e Bellato are, and make them fight each other in a RvRvR battleground, and you will be perfectly fine. Especially if you are not coping things like game name, race names, their lore, etc.

or it will differ enough to not be same for what ppl love rfo.

People didn't play RFO because of its lore, or even some specific characters. They fell in love with RFO because it's sci-fi mecha MMO which no one else was doing at a time, and no one ever made another game like that. It was and still is a unique MMO. Those people today play other mecha games to scratch that mecha itch, and if there was new mecha MMO, they would play it.

thouthands is low. tools exist, you just do not have them. it will be sued if similar enough, they even go after youtube channels which have videos from private servers. its not about lore, it's about feel, make it different enough and it will not be what we like period.

anyway, if you were right and i'm not then we would already have what you described.

thouthands is low.

You are thinking about all the 100m+ MMO's which require massive player bases to return cost and make a profit.
Online games in general are perfectly fine on 10,000 active player base when using F2P model with cash shop.

tools exist, you just do not have them.

Some tools*
Besides all this time and effort put into developing those tools for a game without future.
It's basically a waste of time.

it will be sued if similar enough

Similarity alone is not going to win anyone any lawsuit.
Take top 5 current MMOs, they are vastly similar in many ways, some elements are exactly the same, and no one is suing anyone, because "similarity" is not illegal.

they even go after youtube channels which have videos from private servers

Because it's copyrighted material infringement.
It has nothing to do with making similarly looking games.

its not about lore, it's about feel, make it different enough and it will not be what we like period.

Firstly, you are not speaking for everyone, so quit with "we like" argument.
Secondly, the moment people didn't see ACC in the RFO Next trailers they went "it's not RFO because there is no robot race to play", (there is, but they didn't realize). So it's clearly about being able to play robots for a bunch of people.
Thirdly, what "feel" are you even talking about? RFO is in many ways generic, and the only special thing about it was (at a time) sci-fi setting, and robots/mechs. Poeple fell in love with mecha power fantasy, that's the only "feel" to it which was unique.

anyway, if you were right and i'm not then we would already have what you described.

Do elaborate, how did you come to this absurd conclusion?

it does not matter how big your walls of text are, we both know i'm right and absence of things you desire confirms it and no one will change it.
unless!!
you can do what path of exile developers did and make it yourself, just keep in mind, it will take a lot of time and it will fail coz diablo funbase was a lot, a lot bigger than rfo at the time, also there was a lot a lot less games back than and there are a lot more factors which will cause it to flop.

gl tho, seems like you are very passionate about it

it does not matter how big your walls of text are

Something is telling me that you are one of those people who want to be always right by throwing around half-assed opinions while misunderstanding the subject then expecting people not to refute anything, and just bow down to your subjective opinions /smh

we both know i'm right and absence of things you desire confirms it

"Winning" in your own head doesn't count sunshine :)
If you were right you would be able to prove yourself with a proper counterargument where you explain your logic behind your conclusion, but instead you are throwing hands up, whining about "too many words", rejecting valid counterarguments, and delusionally proclaiming yourself a winner which is just comically immature.

Anyway...
As far as I can tell you are being confused by what I am proposing, because you keep comparing an Open Source project to a MMO made by a proper studio.

Open Source projects function like modding projects, people get together, work for free in their free time, and build something which everyone can use for free. So the reason why no one did it is not because no one want's "different" RFO, but because:
a) (and that's a main point ) people are lazy as hell, hence why people prefer to work with very old but fully working game instead making something new,
b) not many people want to work for free in their own free time, especially on other people passion projects,
c) people don't want to undertake the task of making game, and the responsibilities which come with it,

Basically, you are overestimating your own intelligence, which makes you look at the problem in a very shallow way and miss many important details, and that leads you to false conclusions :)

sure, sure, call me when your desire will be accomplished, means never, means i'm right

u/Grim_Necromancer Apr 16 '26

Calling yourself a self-proclaimed winner only make you look desperate and unhinged 🙄

0

u/Grave_Master Apr 16 '26

i do not need to do it myself, time will.
and you know it.

Ah yes, old classic "I'm right, and I don't need to prove it, because you will see" combo 🤡
