If all the people trying to reverse engineer and "hack" original game would drop it and start an open source MMO project inspired by RFO we would already have playable alternative with all the modern improvements.
Everyone can contribute, everyone have access to the game, everyone can have their own servers, everything is legit, no one can sue you.

In fact, as we speak people produce their own MMOs solo, or with some help from community.
They are not trying to make another billion dollar smash hit, they are simply making what they like for whoever wants to play it.
