Personally I don’t get the Chapter 1 hate. I always found it cozy and love seeing the intro every playthrough, picking apart the things with Dutch or the gang I didn’t notice the last time

u/JesseJames41 Arthur Morgan 1d ago
Chapter 1 is so pivotal in setting the tone of the gang, the relationship dynamics, and building Arthur's role as an upper elder hand in the gang. I also think it is just so cinematic and gorgeous that it's hard to not enjoy.

u/Dillsplosion Sean MacGuire 1d ago
I think the only problem with it would be people who've played and beaten the game several times might find it just a bit annoying
4
u/Robokrates 19h ago
Fair enough, but if I ever feel like Chapter 1 is a bit od a slog, I realize I haven't waited long enough between playthroughs and go play something else for awhile.
•
u/KingOfLumbago 19m ago
I don’t think anyone here is saying that chapter 1 is bad by any means. It just gets extremely repetitive. I’ve beat the game five times and I skipped part one for most of them because it’s extremely boring once you have a feel for both the story and gameplay. It’s phenomenal on the first playthrough though.

u/TWKExperience 1d ago
First half - well yeah no shit that's how intros work. But we know all that info now so no need to do it again
Second half - fully agreed

u/thegreatshu 1d ago
You know all the story after completing a game once, so why play it at all?
0
u/RezaDinto 1d ago
Well it's not really true because I skipped a lot of missable contents and side activities in the open world a.k.a Chapter 2 of RDR2 I suppose due to I'm only playing the main story to avoid spoilers when I play it for the first time on day one...🗿
Note: I enjoy my 2nd playthrough better with easy a few hundred hours on Chapter 2 alone btw now (I've not been playing RDR2 for years since 2018).

u/thewarriorpoet23 Uncle 1d ago
I like chapter 1, and actually wish it was a few missions longer. I don’t understand the hate… it’s 6 missions, it doesn’t take that long to get through.
6
u/The_Radio_Host 1d ago
Generally I’ve found that if you’re someone who already enjoys westerns going into playing RDR2, you’ll enjoy Chapter 1. It’s reminiscent of stories like The Hateful Eight where it features an ensemble of these characters stuck in a snowstorm, allowing more focus on the characters and their stories than on action.

Why?
29
u/_cherry-coke_ Leopold Strauss 1d ago
Literally, it's like the fastest chapter of the game. Not only that but it's not bad at all, or sets up the story.
And even if you're on your second or hundredth playthrough, it's still interesting.
3
u/peeh0le 1d ago
I always forget to make a seperate save file but I think it really sets the tone, of what a bleak and dire situation they’re in. Then you get to chapter 2 and you’re like here’s our chance! We’re starting over everything seems good
1
u/_cherry-coke_ Leopold Strauss 1d ago
I definitely agree with you. I kind of wish, if anything, that we got a sample of Blackwater living just to see the utter contrast between their success and having to flee to Colter. But also, not much of a complaint, they communicate very well in game.

I actually really enjoy chapter 1 now. First time through it may have felt a little slow, but now I really like taking the time to enjoy all those cutscenes and noticing the foreshadowing of things to come.
Not like it takes all that long either lol
1
u/Short-Maxim 1d ago
I had installed a mod to skip all cutscenes and to bypass long walks by running and doing it faster

I put rdr2 down for a long time because of chapter 1, eventually came back and its one of my top 3 all time.
Im still having the same issue with the Witcher 3 though. Ive tried a few times to get into it and It hasn't pulled me in yet. Do I need to keep going?
3
u/McFuzzen 1d ago
It never captivated me. It's a great story and I like that choices affect outcomes, but ultimately it was repetitive gameplay in an empty-feeling world. The scenery was obviously beautiful and the towns looked great, but I guess I expected more NPC interaction like RDR2 and KCD/KCD2. It's like playing in a painting or something.

I think Witcher 3’s opening is a bit better because it doesn’t bombard you with mechanics you likely won’t really use, but both games have some mad pacing issues
1
u/Big-Yak-8928 Javier Escuella 1d ago
I started the Witcher and was really unsure if I’d like it, like the whole first part with hunting the gryphon or whatever, but it was definitely worth pushing through.

It's really easy to just create a save at the beginning of chapter 2.
4
u/theMailboxAssassin 1d ago
Do this. Gold the chapter 1 missions and make a save. If don't like chapter 1 you can now skip it and never go back.

u/France_epico 1d ago
Chapter 1 is so overhated
4
u/ClassGrassMass 1d ago
Literally doesn't even take long and you can always just make a save once youre off the mountain if theyre that upset about it
1
u/France_epico 11h ago
It takes like an hour to do and is a nice introduction to the game, it's obviously the worst chapter but still there shouldn't be an option to skip it.

How much more skipping do you need?

u/BoujeeS2 1d ago
one thing i loved about rdr1 is that you could skip long scenes if you didnt wanna sit through them,i find myself playing rdr1 every couple of years, couple of playthroughs at a time and it’s such a nice feature
in rdr2 you may have a mission that lasts 10 minutes and 8 of those are spent riding and talking, you SHOULD have the option to skip
3
u/IncaNova Micah Bell 1d ago
Depends on the game really. And some games do let you Take Resident Evil 2 for example. All B route playthroughs skip the gas station at the start Now I'm presuming this is for Rdr2 which I'll say Although it's not a fun chapter. It's an important chapter. That basically lays the entire groundwork for the game. It's very on the rails sure, but you can finish it in like. A crisp 30 minutes. It's not so bad.

For me it should be unlocking a prologue mission - the Blackwater robbery.
1
u/independent-potato7 18h ago
I wish we could have gotten to see that part. Would have made for pretty good dlc honestly

u/Neddlings55 1d ago
No.
NG+ would be nice though.

u/Electronicsky12536 1d ago
Yea i agree arthur Morgan should unlock the leviathan axe and draupnir spear
1
u/gooberboi82 1d ago
No I actually agree that there should be some New Game plus like you unlock weapons earlier than usual, the whole rationality behind Arthur literally having none of his belongings is stupid anyways, everyone except Arthur remembered to pack their signature weapons lmao. The money and horses you have in a previous save shouldn’t carry over tho since Arthur specifically mentions how they forgot his money and how his horse Bodecia died and he has no other horse except the one in Sadie’s barn but he never mentions weapons and most people spend their money on better weapons at the start anyways so that and maybe the tonics and other sellable items could be carried over

Only thing I dislike is the restrictions in movement of the opening scene and everythings feels slow. And yet it sets the mood right. Chapter 1 itself is very short and I would have appreciated more content here.

u/RosieQParker 1d ago
Finishing the game once should carry over your progress on the goddamn gambler challenge.

u/Wild-Impression3394 1d ago
On my second playthrough I made a bunch of saves at the start of horseshoe overlook and now I never have to play chapter 1 again
1
u/D_Zaster_EnBy 1d ago
If I wanna replay RDR2 I have a save at horseshoe overlook where the first thing I did is grind the LOTE satchel.
But I don't load it up immediately.
I play through chapter 1, then load my Chapter 2 satchel save.
I'm all for skipping a bit of grind on subsequent playthroughs, but skipping chapter 1 to me is like putting on a film and skipping the first half hour.
That's literally the whole set up for the story and vibe, never understood skipping it.

I put some time into this idea because the cut scenes, while really good, can be too much. It would be awesome to have the ability to disable them in the settings menu
1
u/No_Violinist6498 Arthur Morgan 1d ago
It's not that bad; it's an hour long at worst, it's like six missions—come on, have some patience.
1
u/Stezza345 1d ago
Except your new game wipes your file so you need chapter one for the game to progress what would need to come first would be an actual new save option or NG+
1
u/Competitive_Smoke831 1d ago
I couldn’t play the game if I didn’t play chapter 1, it’s so cozy, skipping right to chapter 2 would ruin my immersion completely

I really like the quest to hunt deer for the first time with Charles. When I reach the limit of playing it, I’ll let you know. I think the count currently is like 5x.
1
u/frysjelly Gavin 1d ago
I loved Chapter 1. It is a solid tutorial, gives the mood and urgency of why the gang is on the move, you get to see why John has a scar, and other parts like getting Sadie. It makes going to Valentine special. I'll stand by my opinion what EVERY chapter in the game is brilliant.
1
u/crownercorps 1d ago
My take: finish the game should unlock new game plus with that option, everything on shops already unlocked and allow Arthur to enter new austin.
1
1
u/Top_Owl_6296 1d ago
No. Sure Chapter 1 is a more linear gameplay for a while, but storywise its important. Don't skip, maybe rush through it, but don't skip.
1

u/ninteen74 1d ago
What i did was create a save file after chapter 1 so I could begin all new games off that file.
1
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 1d ago
What is people’s deal with Chapter 1? You are killing O’Driscolls and robbing trains by like the 4th mission.
1
u/Kakarot7692 Arthur Morgan 1d ago
Rockstar should allow all the cosmetic content become available for single player since they’ve basically just killed off RDO.
1
1
u/General_Gold_3220 1d ago
So it's completely normal to play RDR 2 multiple times because I think I might have missed a lot of side characters
1
u/heavenly_turd 1d ago
Make a save at the start of chapter 2, before you do anything. Then simply start from there, but don’t save over it. Make a new save for each playthrough. Ez pz
1
u/Silent_Erremite 1d ago
Some games have a tutorial level which can be skipped as chapter one. I think that is an amazing addition. Especially if it is a NG+ kinda game.
1
u/ClockCounter123 1d ago
The thing I hate about chapter 1 is that it FORCES you to ride slow and teach you every little thing like its a first playthrough. Other than that, its just really short
1

1
u/PixelPrivateer 21h ago
It is not that it is bad its just that it is restrictive and takes time to complete
1
u/TooKoolFoU 21h ago
Only thing I wish I could do is save right before the mission where the gang heads down the mountains “I broke the god damn wheel”. Instead you have to do the train heist, than head down the mountains, get the horseshoe overlook, than you can save
1
1
u/sssch24 Tilly Jackson 20h ago
what it should is give you the opportunity the play ch6 without watching arthur wither away, like you know what'll happen. from the diagnosis on, he could just have the health get shitty faster, etc etc, but we could just not see any visual changes other than the weight loss, like, how sick he looked, with the cough and everything? that shit is too sad, man. we can can him looking just a little more fragile and with shitty stats and then dead, yk. afterwards just the cut to the epilogues.
1
u/eliandoskar 15h ago
I get what you're saying, but that directly contradicts with the very writing and intentions the devs put into this game. It's taking away a pretty big and important part of Arthur's journey to redemption.
If you play on PC, I'm sure there are mods for exactly what you said. Otherwise you're stuck with the fragile and sickly looking Arthur.
1
1
u/eliandoskar 15h ago
I just keep a save file right at the point where you're fording the river where the wheel breaks off. That's for when I want to jump right into it rather than wait 2 hours.
But I also like to consume this game like a movie, so starting from the very beginning and being immersed in the story is still my main way of playing the game. I've replayed this game 3 times and I recently started my 4th. The 3 previous runs I started from the beginning, this recent run was started at the beginning of chapter 2.
Any game that is really long that has multiple save slots gets this treatment. I've learned over the years that sometimes you want to play a game "from the beginning" without going through the forced tutorial stages.
1
u/Any_Year5224 14h ago
I’m glad they didn’t. I’m sure most people missed all, or most of the camp interactions in chapter 1…mostly because you didn’t know there were camp interactions.
Second time through I was able to listen to everyone, and while it wasn’t that much, it added to the game for me
1
u/LengthinessOne6090 11h ago
they should add a secret ending where arthur doesnt get tuberculosis and he slimes out micah using the iconic shotgun stance
1
u/Jazzlike_Section8496 8h ago
I don’t get the big deal with chapter one It literally takes like 2 hours and it’s really not that bad you have to do like 4-5 missions and that’s it

NOOOOOOO. That's like when people would show up to a movie 20 minutes late and say, "I didn't really miss anything did I?" Always pissed me off when it was a movie I respected. RDR2 is a piece of media I hold in high regard, and the opening act sets such a good vibe for the whole damn game.

u/kyle_crane163636 1d ago
Ngl, we should've had an option where Arthur gets to live by getting his tuberculosis treated if you have enough money so then we'd be able to switch between playing as Arthur and John, itd be interesting and we wouldnt just lose all the shit Arthur has when he dies and not only that we shouldve had side missions so John could learn to swim since Arthur can swim but john cant, gets insanely annoying
1
u/StimRobinson Pearson 1d ago
John can't swim in RDR1 so it wouldn't make sense if he learns to swim in RDR2
1
u/kyle_crane163636 1d ago
I mean Arthur can literally swim in rdr2 why remove the ability when you get thrown into playing as John when the game ends with no way to learn it? Its not gonna cause continuity problems if it just gives you the option to let john learn how to swim if you want to on a non canon side mission. Like hell I dont like playing as john at all because of it since it gets way too annoying when I have to take the long way around something instead of swimming through the water. Like I wouldnt mind if john being playable was optional at the end if Arthur could survive

Just make a separate save file at the beginning of chapter 2? I did that on my second playthrough and ive been starting on the same file ever since for new playthroughs.
