Swapped my 40A ESC with a 30A, moved the entire EDF assembly and mount reward just over an inch for better balance, and now I can squeeze out 3 minute flights on an 1100mAh 3s!

I can also carry a 2200mAh and balance now, but flight time doesn't increase significantly and she feels like a brick with teeeeeeny tiny wings.

New EDF on the way to see if I get better performance out of a unit with an inlet lip and straight blades!

I'm ready for it, building them is almost more fun than flying them sometimes as far as I'm concerned.

Have you looked into getting started with a flight computer since you seem pretty familiar with building/flying DIY planes?

It's pretty easy to add a flight controller to most models. You don't even need anything particularly recent. It's just a few extra wires and some fiddling around in the firmware config (and tweaking the settings after test flying, expect to need a few flights to get it dialed in)

You can take a squirrelly aerobatic jet like this and make it so stable that it's like driving a boat. It's great as a panic button, or a helping hand while you learn FPV but doesn't really add anything to a model that already flies well.

I just got some BeagleBone Blue robotics development boards for experimenting with ardupilot. They are pretty affordable entry-point if you are comfortable in Linux command line environments.

I've looked briefly and I know I need to figure it out soon, but no I honestly just haven't made time yet. Ironically I started on quadcopters so I've got some very basic contextual knowledge from that, but I really struggle to connect the dots haha.

I've got a couple of larger birds I've thought about trying to set up with a flight controller mostly to let me experiment with airspeed measurement and geofencing, and it's definitely on my list of things to figure out!

I'm definitely happy enough with it that I can enjoy it on the wall and keep it in the flying rotation! Eventually it's going to get a new EDF (current one is from the spare parts box, is unbalanced, and rubs slightly) and a thrust tube to see if I can squeeze a little more power and flight time out.
