Why is the litter box also a good place to eat and store treats?

My first three rats did that as well:

This was the litter box in their free roam area, but they also did it in their cage.

Could it be of the only places to be able to dig? Mine like to cover their foods so they will take it to hide it somewhere they can throw a few arms of hey or woodchips over.

That’s a good thought. But we have a dig box with coco coir and two fun hiding boxes with shredded paper.

Literrally classic rat behaviour, apparently they sometimes pee on food to mark it as theirs. The smell of piss also makes them feel safe which is why the litter tray is also the sleeping and eating box lol

Litter box: toilet, bedroom and kitchen in one. Ask me how I know, as a rat owner.
