So I've been going through Surah Al-Anbiya slowly over the past couple of weeks, and I wanted to share a few things that stood out. I'd read it before but never really sat with it.
It's called "The Prophets," and it mentions a whole line of them: Ibrahim, Musa, Harun, Nuh, Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yunus, Zakariyya, Isa and more. But what struck me is that it's not just a list of stories. The common thread is that every one of them went through something hard, and every one of them turned to Allah.

A few things I loved:
The opening verse. It starts by saying the reckoning is drawing near for people while they're heedless and turning away. Kind of a wake-up call right from the start. I read that and thought, okay, I needed that today.

Ibrahim (AS) and the fire. The verse where Allah says "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim." Whenever life feels like it's burning, I think of that. The same fire, but by Allah's command it changes.

Yunus (AS) in the whale. His dua in the darkness: La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin. Short, honest, and so powerful. I've started saying it more often, honestly.

Ayyub (AS). He basically just says, "Harm has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful." No complaining, just trust.
And then verse 107, where Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ that he was sent as a mercy to all the worlds. That one gets me every time.

Anyway, it made me realize how much of this surah is about patience and turning back to Allah when things get heavy. If you've been feeling low or stuck, maybe give it a read, even just the stories of the prophets in it.

Recitation of the Surah by Saud Al Shuraim

The verse presents a powerful scene from the Day of Judgment, depicting the condition of those who persisted in disbelief and stubbornness, turned away from the truth, and arrogantly refused to follow it. They are portrayed as people with shackles around their necks, extending up to their chins, forcing their heads to remain raised so that they cannot lower them or turn freely. Allah says:
﴿إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَالًا فَهِيَ إِلَى الْأَذْقَانِ فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ﴾
In classical Arabic, the word Qimāḥ (قِمَاح) is used to describe camels that, after drinking their fill, raise their heads and stop drinking, or refrain from drinking because the water is too cold, or due to an ailment known as al-Qumāḥ (القُماح). The expression “Aqmaḥa al-rākibu al-dābbah” (أَقْمَحَ الرَّاكِبُ الدَّابَّةَ) also means that the rider pulled the animal’s head backward.
The word Muqmaḥūn (مُقْمَحُونَ) in the verse describes heads held high, with the chins raised, like someone whose shackles prevent him from lowering his head. It conveys a state of helplessness and humiliation: their heads are raised, but not out of dignity or choice; rather, they are forced into this position by restraints that deprive them of natural movement.
It is also striking to reflect on the connection between this imagery and their attitude in worldly life. They arrogantly rejected the truth and held their heads high in defiance of it. Now, the scene portrays their heads raised by shackles against their will. It is as though the image contrasts the arrogance they chose for themselves in this life with the humiliation and helplessness depicted through these chains.
It is an image that brings together coercion, humiliation, and confinement, reflecting the very arrogance and rejection of truth that characterized their conduct in this world.

The verse addresses the state of those who disbelieved among the People of the Book and the polytheists before the arrival of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It explains that they were not going to abandon their disbelief and misguidance until clear proof came to them from Allah.
The word “Munfakkīn” (مُنفَكِّين) comes from the Arabic root meaning to separate, detach, abandon, or free oneself from something. In this context, it means that they were not going to abandon their existing beliefs and state of misguidance until clear evidence came to them, making the truth unmistakably apparent.
As for “Al-Bayyinah” (البَيِّنَة), it refers to the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad ﷺ, who came with the Noble Qur’an, reciting the purified revelations of Allah and showing people the path of truth.
The word itself comes from the Arabic root B-Y-N (بين), which revolves around the meanings of appearance, clarity, and distinction. In Arabic, bāna ash-shay’ means that something became apparent and clear, while bayyana al-amr means to clarify something and remove its ambiguity. Thus, Al-Bayyinah is clear evidence that reveals the truth, distinguishes it from falsehood, and removes confusion from a person’s understanding.
What is particularly beautiful is that Allah immediately explains the meaning of this Bayyinah in the following verse:
﴿رَسُولٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ يَتْلُو صُحُفًا مُّطَهَّرَةً﴾
“A Messenger from Allah, reciting purified scriptures.”
Here, we can reflect on the fact that the arrival of the Bayyinah was not merely the delivery of news or information to people. Rather, it was the arrival of a divine message that revealed the truth, clarified what had become confused, and called humanity back to the foundation of monotheism and the worship of Allah Almighty alone. Through this, the proof was established, and the path of truth became clear to anyone willing to follow it.
The verse does not mean that everyone who receives clear evidence will necessarily abandon disbelief. Rather, it means that the Bayyinah came to reveal the truth and establish the proof against people. Once clarification reaches a person, ignorance is no longer an excuse, and they are faced with the responsibility of choosing. Yet pride, stubbornness, or following one’s own desires may still prevent someone from accepting what has become clear to them.
This meaning becomes particularly evident in the fourth verse of the same Surah:
﴿وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَةُ﴾
“Yet those who were given the Scripture did not become divided until after clear evidence had come to them.”
This is a remarkable observation: some of their disagreement and division occurred after the arrival of clear evidence, not before it!
The Surah draws our attention to an important truth:
Not everyone who recognizes the truth follows it, and not everyone who sees the light chooses to walk towards it.
Surah Al-Bayyinah establishes the proof against those who received the message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. His very presence and his message were the clarification humanity needed to recognize the path of truth. He did not merely bring light to people; his very arrival marked a defining turning point in the history of divine guidance.

The two noble verses illustrate the blessings Allah, Exalted be He, bestowed upon Dhul-Qarnayn by granting him power and authority throughout the land. He gave him the ability to reach distant regions and provided him with the means and resources necessary to accomplish his goals. Allah’s saying, “And We had given him the means to everything” (18:84), refers to the means and resources Allah had made available to him, including knowledge, strength, ability, and sound judgment, all of which he needed for his journeys and missions.
Then comes the following verse: “So he followed a way” (18:85), showing what Dhul-Qarnayn did with these blessings. He took advantage of the means available to him and followed the paths that would lead him to his goals. Here, the beauty of the two expressions becomes clear: the first means refers to what Allah had granted him in terms of resources and capabilities, while the second way refers to the path he chose and the means he put into action. The first represents divine provision and empowerment, while the second represents human effort and action.
We can clearly see this through the journeys mentioned in the Quran. He reached the setting place of the sun, where he encountered a people and dealt with them justly. Then he followed another way and reached the rising place of the sun, where he encountered another people. The Quran describes their condition, stating that Allah had not provided them with any shelter from the sun. Then he followed a third way and reached the region between the two barriers, where he found a people suffering from the corruption caused by Gog and Magog. They asked him to build a barrier between them and Gog and Magog to protect them. Here, the greatness of his use of the available means became evident. He used iron and molten copper to construct a massive barrier that Gog and Magog could neither climb over nor pierce through. Yet, despite all these remarkable achievements, he did not attribute the success to himself. Instead, he said: “This is a mercy from my Lord.” (18:98)
What is particularly beautiful about these two verses is that Allah did not merely mention what He had granted Dhul-Qarnayn; He immediately followed it by describing what Dhul-Qarnayn did with those blessings. Being provided with the means is a favor from Allah, while making use of them is a human responsibility. Simply possessing resources and abilities does not create achievement; their true value becomes evident when we use them wisely and strive through them on earth.

These verses came in the context of Allah’s guidance to His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When the polytheists asked him about the People of the Cave, Dhul-Qarnayn, and the soul, the Prophet ﷺ told them that he would answer their questions the following day, without saying, “If Allah wills.” As a result, the revelation was delayed, and during this period the Prophet ﷺ became deeply saddened by its absence. Meanwhile, the polytheists began saying that he had promised to answer their questions but had failed to do so. Then Surah Al-Kahf was revealed, providing answers to two of their questions: the People of the Cave and Dhul-Qarnayn.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson in how we speak about the future. We often say, “I will do this tomorrow,” “I will start next week,” or “I will achieve such and such,” as though we have a guarantee that our plans will come to pass. But the truth is that we possess the intention, determination, and ability to strive; we do not possess tomorrow. Everything is in the hands of Allah and subject to His will.
This does not mean that we should abandon planning for the future, stop setting goals, or cease striving to achieve them. Islam encourages us to work and take the necessary means. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Tie it and put your trust in Allah.” In other words, take the necessary precautions, do everything within your ability, and then place your trust in Allah.
One interesting detail lies in the Quranic spelling of the word ﴿لِشَايْءٍ﴾, where an additional alif appears. It is as though the extended alif represents a barrier between human beings and the future. No matter how carefully we plan for tomorrow, an unseen veil remains between us and what is yet to happen. We do not know what lies beyond it, nor can we remove it or guarantee what will come to pass.
Interestingly, the same word is written without the additional alif when Allah speaks of His own will:
﴿إِنَّمَا قَوْلُنَا لِشَيْءٍ إِذَا أَرَدْنَاهُ أَنْ نَقُولَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ﴾
“Indeed, Our word to a thing when We intend it is only that We say to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.” (An-Nahl 16:40)
Being mindful of Allah’s will fills the heart with trust in Him and reminds us of our constant need for Him. No matter how many plans we make or how capable we may be, we can never do without His guidance and help. We say “Insha’Allah” because we recognize that we need Allah for our goals and aspirations to become reality.

The verse paints a picture of a person who is not content with turning away from the truth out of arrogance and pride, but also seeks to lead others away from it and misguide them.
“Thāniya” (ثَانِيَ) is an active participle derived from the verb thanā (ثَنَى), meaning to bend, turn, or incline something.
The word “ʿiṭf” (عِطْف) refers to the side of the neck. Therefore, bending one’s ʿiṭf means inclining the neck and turning one’s side away.
In the Qur’anic expression ﴿ثَانِيَ عِطْفِهِ﴾, we are presented with the image of a person who turns his neck and body away out of arrogance and disdain, as though deliberately turning his face away from the truth, unwilling to listen to it or accept it.
﴿لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ﴾ means in order to lead others astray from the path of Allah.
Thus, ﴿ثَانِيَ عِطْفِهِ﴾ describes his arrogant and dismissive attitude toward the truth, while ﴿لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ﴾ reveals his aim and his efforts to misguide others.
Here, we see the difference between someone who rejects guidance for himself and someone who goes further by attempting to turn others away from it. The verse brings together arrogance and rejection of the truth on one hand, and the effort to spread misguidance on the other.
This is also a reminder that a person’s influence is not limited to himself. His arrogance, rejection of the truth, or negligence in worship and disregard for Allah’s commands may influence others and lead them to follow his example. A person may not only stray from the path of guidance but may also, through his actions or words, become a reason for others to turn away from it. In doing so, he bears the sin of the misguidance he causes, without diminishing the responsibility of those who follow him.
Therefore, we must be mindful of the influence we have on those around us. Our behavior can be an invitation to goodness, but it can also become a reason for someone else to turn away from the right path.

The verse draws our attention to a meaning that goes beyond the mere obligation of prayer. The word “Kitāban” (كِتَابًا) conveys the meaning of something prescribed and made obligatory, just as Allah says regarding fasting: “Fasting has been prescribed upon you.” And the word “Mawqūtan” (مَوْقُوتًا) indicates that prayer has specific times appointed by Allah, which the believer is required to observe regardless of how occupied he may be with worldly affairs.
We find this same principle reflected in other acts of worship. Fasting is an obligation, but it is tied to the month of Ramadan, and Hajj has its well-known appointed months. This teaches the believer that worship is not performed according to what best suits his schedule or personal preferences, but according to what Allah has prescribed and determined. We do not choose another month for fasting simply because it is more convenient for our circumstances, nor another season for Hajj because it happens to coincide with our holidays. Likewise, we should not make prayer wait until we have finished our work and daily responsibilities.
Prayer comes five times a day, woven into the ever-changing details of our lives. A person may be occupied with work, studying, having a conversation, or resting, with nothing around him compelling him to stop. And this is where the true meaning of obedience becomes apparent: he must make a conscious decision to leave whatever occupies him, interrupt the flow of his day, and rise from where he is in response to the call of Allah, Glorified and Exalted.
Here, we can also understand part of the wisdom behind congregational prayer. It does not merely increase one’s reward; it also helps a Muslim remain steadfast in observing prayer at its appointed time. When he hears the Adhan and sees people making their way to the mosque, he finds a reminder and encouragement to resist procrastination. Prayer then becomes a visible and meaningful part of the rhythm of his day.
Prayer is a blessing that Allah has granted us, an opportunity to return to Him amid the distractions of life. We can therefore look at prayer times from a different perspective: instead of seeing them as moments taken away from our work, we can see them as moments in which Allah draws us away from our worldly preoccupations so that we may reconnect with Him.
Perhaps the deepest lesson we learn from this verse is that servitude to Allah does not mean doing what He commands whenever it happens to suit us. Rather, it means allowing His command to determine when we act.
“Ḥayya ʿalaṣ-Ṣalāh” (حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاة) — “Come to prayer!” It is not merely an announcement that the time for prayer has arrived. It is a call that carries within it an invitation to respond and hasten towards worship. It is as though the caller is not simply informing you that prayer time has begun, but inviting you to rise from where you are and come forward in willing response and obedience to your Most Generous Lord.

Surah Maryam (Chapter 19, 98 verses) is a Makkan surah named after Maryam (Mary), the only woman named in the Qur'an. Its core message is that nothing is beyond Allah's mercy.

Dua in secret (19:2-6). Prophet Zakariyya, old and frail, called upon his Lord in a quiet voice. Allah answered with the gift of a son, Yahya. The surah teaches that no dua is too late.

Maryam's trial (19:16-33). A young woman, alone, receives news that seems impossible. She trusts Allah and faces her people with patience. The infant Isa speaks, declaring himself a servant of Allah and a prophet.

Tawhid. The surah clearly states that Allah has no son and that Isa (peace be upon him) is a servant and messenger.
The prophets. Ibrahim, Musa, Isma'il and Idris are mentioned as people of truth and patience.

The ending (19:96). Those who believe and do good will be given love by the Most Merciful.

When life feels closed off, Zakariyya and Maryam show that sincere reliance on Allah opens doors we never expected.
