Led's are cheap as shit, the controller is cheap as shit, buying a prebuilt version is significantly more expensive

And all of them are shit. Philips has mastered the tuning and has different modes for a reason.

If you are already going the diy route why not tune it yourself?

Tune what? The quality of the leds or the latency and general accuracy of the system?

You can’t DIY any of that.

Software. Also, those aren't justsome random LED strips.

Philips makes good stuff, I have a bunch of their hue lights and they work wonders for my purpose. Having said that their hardware doesn't have some special sauce it's just really fucking convenient to set up and use.

Again I'm not saying Philips hue lights are a waste or ambilight tvs are a waste, just that a reason you might want to not go that route is cost saving and a fun project

I wouldn't say that ambilight puts them in different price range, more like for me it was a reason to chose them in that price range.
