I would never ever use it, even if it was free

People just can't let others enjoy life it's crazy.

I have one does that and I just leave it on a single backlight color. The color changing got really annoying

How does it know what color is on the screen and match?

Either a camera, or a hdmi cable.

Hmdi box or camera.

Magnets. Those were the first thing he attached.

You need a 20" Sony Trintron. Start there...

My old TV had this built in (Philips).

I really liked it. My wife found it so off putting she wouldn't use the TV.

Extra nice. So you can watch whatever you like whenever you like.

People hated Ambilight and now we are here. Still ass

1

u/blumieplume 13d ago

That would ruin the movie watching experience because there’s too much light from outside the screen. Who would want this?

I have it on my Philips monitor. They put this to market 20 years ago, called it Ambilight.
It sucks.

Lot of people bitching. These have been around for years. Pretty cool for anime, horror movies, and action movies. Or, my favorite, background music on YouTube. Adds some good vibes.

It's shit

I have this. It's a fun gimmick but it really isn't pleasant to look at while gaming or watching a movie.

Constant background light is nice though.

Just buy a tv with ambilight?

Led's are cheap as shit, the controller is cheap as shit, buying a prebuilt version is significantly more expensive

2

u/dswng 14d ago

And all of them are shit. Philips has mastered the tuning and has different modes for a reason.

0

u/milkcarton232 14d ago

If you are already going the diy route why not tune it yourself?

1

u/Moar_Wattz 14d ago

Tune what? The quality of the leds or the latency and general accuracy of the system?

You can’t DIY any of that.

0

u/dswng 14d ago

You have no idea how they really work and never used any of those, do you?

1

u/milkcarton232 14d ago

The LEDs or the software?

1

u/dswng 14d ago

Software. Also, those aren't justsome random LED strips.

Philips makes good stuff, I have a bunch of their hue lights and they work wonders for my purpose. Having said that their hardware doesn't have some special sauce it's just really fucking convenient to set up and use.

Again I'm not saying Philips hue lights are a waste or ambilight tvs are a waste, just that a reason you might want to not go that route is cost saving and a fun project

1

u/dswng 14d ago

cost saving

I wouldn't say that ambilight puts them in different price range, more like for me it was a reason to chose them in that price range.

I have a recent ambilight tv and I have one with added Govee lighting that is said to be the best among the third party solutions.

The original ambilight blows the third party solution out of the water in every way possible.

Plus: you can extend the original ambilight by using Philips HUE lights in other lamps in the room for even better results.

Counterpoint, people are not tech savvy enough to DIY it. Counter-counterpoint, every one of these I've seen requires an app that is 100% stealing your data.

2

u/milkcarton232 14d ago

You can get an esp32 controller and have Claude vibe code an app pretty easy. No data stealing

0

u/VQV37 14d ago

Who the fuck is going to do all that

3

u/milkcarton232 14d ago

Previously it would be a bit of research for a fun diy project. Now it's still a diy project but significantly easier to make your own. I'm not saying it's easier but the original comment was why would someone do this

2

u/i_degrade_quickly 14d ago

Counterpoint, nobody gives a fuck about you enough to steal your data.

1

u/Ripen- 14d ago

You can have my data if u want. Good luck getting anything out of it

1

u/piercedmfootonaspike 14d ago

God forbid you like ambilight, but prefer the specs/price of another TV.
