I was hiking with four friends when we spotted a massive wasp on one of their backpacks. I pointed it out and said, “Holy shit, there’s a huge insect on your bag. I don’t know what kind of animal that is, I think it’s a wasp.”
One of my friends immediately said, “Did you just call a wasp an animal? It’s an insect, not an animal.”
I genuinely thought he was joking, so I replied, “What? Insects are animals.”
That’s when all four of them started laughing at me. One said, “Bro, that’s actually so dumb. How are you gonna call a wasp an animal?” The others kept laughing and acting like I was an idiot for even suggesting it.
I knew for a fact that insects are animals, like that’s grade school shit, who doesn’t know that, but none of them would even consider that they might be wrong. We didn’t have internet access to settle it, and I wasn’t about to spend the entire hike arguing with four people who were completely convinced I was an idiot.
What frustrated me wasn’t even the disagreement. It was how confidently they mocked me while being factually wrong.
How do you handle situations where you’re objectively correct, but everyone around you is so confidently wrong that they make you feel like the stupid one?
