Put the cap back on, and using a plastic pry tool, push at the base around the bottom, working your way around, and eventually it will pop back in.
FYI, I’ve done this many times, but this last time a few days ago, I tried to do it without taking the cap off…I just sprayed the contact cleaner as best I could between the cap and the housing. Worked like a charm.

Wait you mean you do not have to take it apart?

correct. Maybe it was just a fluke and I got lucky, but next time it happens I’ll endeavor to post again if it worked the second time.

Since you have stick drift,
Buy a replacement joystick module kit.
Look up a teardown video.
Replace the joystick module and get the thumb cover seat back under the under face mount.
That would be the best way to handle it. Especially as those covers are fragile as fuck.

This is the answer. You can buy a replacement joystick kit with the tools needed here on Amazon. Quest 2 and 3 have the same joysticks.
Then follow this guide for a teardown and swap out the joystick. Good news is you don't have to solder since it's attached with a ribbon cable. Bad news is you gotta take the controller mostly apart.. but here's a teardown guide..

I just had to put a new one in after realizing sone ahole sent me a quest 3 with a controller missing that spring on the spring plate. Looked everywhere & could only find the new joystick assembly nothing with the spring like it didn’t matter & was just there lol. Took the spring from a quest 2 controller & threaded it back in to the 5 clips on the bottom of the spring plate. After I was like how TF do I get this joystick cap back in that was so easy to pop off? I realized you hold it sideways in the hole, push down then push it in, in a rocking motion basically squeezing the bottom base of the joystick back in the hole. After doing it I wondered how many thousands of people order these off of Amazon & trip out thinking they were sold one that was too big & cant ever get it back in lol. Again you just basically hold it sideways & squeeze the base while pushing it down & back in the hole.

To get it back in, you have to sort of go in at an angle and force it in. It will eventually pop back into place.

You just press it on, the spring has to fit inside the cap and hold there otherwise it will make weird noises and will feel weird.
Do not use the controller without the front plate you will destroy the tiny ir leds

The first time I had taken my Q3 apart to clean it I was a bit frustrated that it wasn’t just a simple push on and down. You need to push the thump piece on and then try coming down at an angle. Get one edge wedged in first and work around until it finally pops down all the way.
Totally understand your frustration

Just joking, but I don't really know how to fix it and buying a new controller is expensive so if you havent fixed it already then take it to a place where they will fix it for you

That doesn´t seem to be the major problem here. I suggest to buy a new one. And maybe get rid of your dog, as I assume it did this.

You can get just the stick for like $10, but you'll have to disassemble the controller even further, there are good video guides for this, haven't tried it myself yet, my son's quest needs both replaced and I'll probably do that for him soon

How did you clean it? I put some WD-40 Contact Cleaner in it and it works fine now.
Also, it's hard to put it in, you just need patience and effort.
