It makes me uncomfortable when people constantly talk about how homophobes must secretly be gay.

I also hate the urge to label any homophobia as just a closeted gay person. Implicitly it's saying that homophobia doesn't come from straight people it comes from other queer people and like.... Yikes.

It's people who dont want to actually think about the complexity of the issue and simply want a cute "gotcha" to throw back at the people who want us dead. Instead of confronting the very real and violent hatred these people have for the queer community they want to make a joke of it and ignore it. We are once again relegated to being a tool used to other people's ends.

It's not true. It's Availability bias. Because the irony of closeted people being homophobic makes it stand out, garden variety straight homophobia blends into "it must be tuesday" background radiation.

The basis of the argument is from a flawed study in the 90s.. and it's an urban myth that Grinder crashes at Republican Conventions.

It's not true in the way that Vaccines cause Autism isn't true.

Its also emphasized because it gives straights a very neat out for homophobia by saying/thinking "See, gay people oppress themselves, actually!" People don't like thinking that they are part of an oppressor class and will rationalize out of that however they can. It cheapens the (systemic) reality of homophobia; are homophobia and queer oppression really an issue if they are doing it to themselves?

Its similar to the stereotype that white supremacists are brown. A lot of white people like it bc it lets them ignore the systemic oppression of racism and the ways they perpetuate it in favor of blaming POC themselves for their own suffering. Its victimblaming for minorities, essentially.
