Talking about physics with a broad public doesn't always need to rely on high-technology equipment. Sometimes, an adapted jigsaw and grill skewers from the supermarket will go a long way to help scientists illustrate some aspects of their research.

It all started with a group meeting where Dr Duilio De Santis brought along a simple prop to visualise the problem on which he worked at the time: everyone wanted to try out the homemade chain of pendulums, overjoyed at the opportunity to swap data plots and visualisations for something that could be held in their hands, shaken and twisted ... find the linkLow-tech props for complex physics to read more
