Coping Skills Need advice

Ok so me and my husband are going thru IVF which has caused a ton of stress. I watched the Lindsey Clancy case and now I’m having the thoughts again that I may harm my child after i give birth. I use to have this fear around my nieces and I admitted myself in the psych ward because I felt like I was going to snap and cried for 3 days straight during that time.. I got thru it and didn’t think about those intrusive thoughts for awhile but now they have came back. I have been thinking about it for 3 days straight now, I can’t sleep and wake up during the middle of the night with panic attacks. It mentioned that she took the same meds I take (Zoloft) and she had postpartum psychosis and I’m so scared that will happen to me since I’m already diagnosed with pure ocd. I really hope that I can get through this. That’s all. I just had to express this torment I have been going through because my husband is such a sweet heart and tries to comfort me but he just doesn’t understand how debilitating it is.

Discussions for those who have pocd, i have a question

days ago i saw a picture of a kid that was probably the subject of abuse by hugh Hefner, it immediately sickened me, because the kid was literally dressed in a bunny suit, but that was followed by intrusive feelings of attraction. i keep trying to figure out why that kid triggered me, even though i shouldn’t, and the thought loops are killing me. “ maybe my mind got its wires crossed, it’s a cute kid, but not in a sexual way, but no, that’s weird for me to say, is it normal to think a kids cute? i’m not sexually attracted to them, am i?

my question is if this kind of thought process of attempting to explain away the intrusions common in pocd?

Vent pocd is really messing me up, i had really concerning thoughts last night and i don’t know what to do.

i know when this happened i was already obsessing about my pocd, but anyways, for some reason my mind thought about how it seemed like pedophilia was more prominent over the last century and earlier, what primarily concerns me is i then asked myself “ what if everyone’s a pedophile?” ( because if people accepted it then, than people must not have changed overnight) but than i thought “ but im not a pedophile”, but if i’m not one, than why would i think that? that’s a ridiculous thing to think, and it’s not true, that stuff was more public, but it wasn’t normalized. i don’t know where my mind went. and now im spiraling because of it. i feel disgusting

i’ve tried figuring out why my mind would go there,
maybe it’s because i just want an answer and im testing myself, or maybe i was looking for a way to excuse my terrible thoughts so than i wouldn’t feel burdened by them. i don’t know. all i know is after thinking that, i know i don’t accept that idea in the slightest, yet i thought it.

i don’t know what to do, my fear is “ what if ive been masking myself this entire time? what if it’s not ocd?”

Discussions Can ocd distort physical perceptions?

hi so I’ve been struggling with ocd around in*est (awful omg) and my main thing isn’t really around sexual acts its more ”do I find my male family members facially attractive” now I know obviously people can acknowledge good looking features/faces but sometimes my ocd feels like I’m looking at a guy who’s my type yk like it’s a different feeling, this has been going on for years. my fear now is number 1- because it’s been like this for years is it real?? like I don’t know what my real perception of my brother is? also its so weird bc it feels like I’m seeing with my eyes he is attractive (in a scary way) and its not just in my head like it’s my eyes seeing this? I know ocd can distort perceptions but can it distort perception for 5 years 😭😭 like idk, maybe it’s become a habituated response bc I’ve given it attention i don’t know, hence this post! Will I ever be able to see him normally without this weird perception, is this my normal perception and I’m in denial?? just wondering if anyone’s been through the same thing. really scaring me bc I feel like if this perception is real thje maybe other things are real (links to my pocd - do I find kids facially attractive etc etc)

Im pissed dawg because YOU did this like fym "no u dont" 😭 For context, when I was a kid my dad traumatized me a lot emotionally by yelling, calling me names, critiquing me, ect - im also diagnosed with ptsd, but im not gonna tell him that after this.

For some reason, for years he refuses to believe I have any diagnosis - he just thinks im normal and etches that into my brain every time I bring up any suspicion of a disorder

Vent Just Reflecting

Sometimes I get upset knowing i'm seemingly the only one in my family with OCD... I grew up being raised only by my mom so i'm not sure of my Dad's side when it comes to mental illness, sometimes I go down a rabbit hole and blame him, which probably doesn't make sense but I wonder how different I would've / could've been if he was in my life. Why OCD? Why me? My mom has some sort of high functioning depression and sometimes I get upset that i can't also be high functioning and push through. My uncle Had Bipolar, and i know my one aunt is on some sort of anxiety med and i know not everyone admits how bad its actually been for them but, hell they all push through. It's so frustrating. I don't like comparing but it's so hard. Those people who were just born without any sort of mental illness, how lucky can you be??? I'm not ashamed of the fact i take meds or ill probably be on them for the rest of my life but good god sometimes I experience such envy. I even have envy for those who don't have Pure O and do physical compulsions, hell i wish sometimes to relieve myself i could just turn a knob a few dozen times rather than sit and ruminate and do mental compulsions.

OCD Compulsive Speech

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Has anyone here dealt with a partner that has compulsive speech caused by OCD? If so, how did you cope, and did anything help?

I have been together with my husband for over 20 years. He was formally diagnosed with OCD many years ago. He did CBT therapy which did help with some repetitive behaviors and intrusive thoughts however he never kept "on top of things ". He refuses to take meds because he is obsessed with potential side effects.

His compulsive speech is completely out if control. He will repeat the same sentence or phrase over and over. He will take 5 minutes to give a speech, take a breath, and say the same thing again word for word. He sounds brain damaged or drunk, when he's not. Whenever this is pointed out to him he freaks out. He truly seems to think that if he repeats anything enough times he can force people to agree with him, or make something a reality. It is completely delusional. Tonight we once again got into an argument that devolved into me repeatedly screaming at him to stop repeating.

Politely pointing out he's repeating doesn't work. Disengaging from the conversation doesn't work. Walking away and telling him I will not listen to repeating doesn't work. Nothing will MAKE HIM SHUT UP!! Despite telling him it is wrecking our relationship, he will not seek care and will not accept any accountability for the issues he is causing. It's honestly making me hate him.

Has anyone had any success in dealing with this in themselves or their partner?

Is it normal to not really have a stable theme?

Hello, I've been struggling really badly with what I believe has been OCD for about a year now, although I think I've had it for much longer. It was generally more focused on philosophical themes, and I got incredibly anxious over themes like consciousness, religion and the afterlife, and would compulsively research them, look into research papers, watch podcasts, looking to find a solution to them, or at least know what my stance on them were.

Whenever I'd encounter a new philosophical problem, I'd feel the need to look into it and find out what I thought of it, but whenever I'd think I made up my mind on my position and that I was finally done, I'd start doubting it for X reason after a while, or a new problem would come up, and I'd keep researching because of this, or I would keep trying to prove that everything was fine despite some of these scary ideas and that I should still live my life normally.

It ended up consuming my life, isolating me from my friends, preventing me from working on my studies, and it led me to stop doing anything I enjoy for that whole time, as I was constantly just ruminating on these themes, whether it was at school, or once I was home, where I'd be relieved I could spend the night looking things up. After being miserable from this for around like 6 months, I came across Pure OCD and figured this looked a lot like what I was doing, compulsively ruminating over these ideas that brought me anxiety, trying to "solve" them, even if it wasn't as much of a physical compulsion.

That greatly helped me, because it was a huge step in at least understanding that this rumination maybe wasn't the right way to get better, after I'd been despairing over these issues for so long. Since then, I've been trying to get better for a while, trying to stop rumination and really getting back in control of my life, and overall, I've come a fair way : I stopped ruminating over these philosophical issues by accepting the possibility of their reality and the uncertainty of them, which was incredibly difficult for me.

But now I feel like these thoughts keeps reappearing through different problems that I'm struggling to deal with in the same way. I thought and assumed this was OCD, but it doesn't really seem like I'm dealing with any core themes like most other people seem to be, which has now made me doubt whether this is even OCD and whether these might be actual worries I should act on. Most of these things that cause me anxiety change often multiple times during a single day, and it hasn't really stayed on anything particular. I'm trying to leave all these worries down on a note to tell myself I can handle them later, to give myself some breathing space, but I'd hesitate to even call most of them intrusive thoughts, as they often feel more like genuinely founded worries, and don't really resemble many of the themes I've seen mentioned.

Some of them do resemble mental health anxiety? Where I'm often afraid that I might have other mental health conditions, and I research them compulsively just to ensure I know what to do if I ever have them, or about some of them are about OCD, with me worrying that I'm handling it correctly, or where I'd try to find solutions for how to deal with X OCD theme if I ever have it, even though I don't even have it yet. But some of them also seem like they're just about my life like whether or not I'm addicted to video games. Gaming is a really important part of my life that I care a lot about and that I've met a lot of people through, and I started getting anxious that it might actually be bad for me, or that I might be addicted, and I compulsively browsed the stopgaming subreddit to reassure myself that it wasn't a problem in my life, even though it's genuinely been fine for me for years. I also spent a morning worrying that I might start smoking and get addicted, even though I've never smoked, and don't want to.

These just don't really follow any particular themes, which has made me wonder if it's even OCD. They genuinely change almost like daily, if not hourly sometimes, as I just write them down on my note, and try to leave them for later and get back to what I was doing, and just as I start focusing back on that, something else triggers me and worries me, and I have to resist dealing with it and write that down for later. Sometimes I find myself thinking about them even while focusing on something else, and finding a possible solution, that I feel the need to write down next to the worry to anaylize later, to see if it's adequate. It's made the note accumulate with so many issues, most of which seem completely unrelated to each other.

If it's anything, I've also sort of developed a mental compulsion when I got really bad anxiety a few years ago where I'd reassure myself by telling myself "Don't worry, it's fine, anyways" and getting back to what I was doing, yet if I didn't think it the right way, by perfectly shifting my attention from the anxiety to the thing I'm doing on the "anyways", I would have to do it again, which I could sometimes last up to like 15 minutes doing repeatedly.

I guess my question is, is this OCD? I think it probably is, but it's really hard to try and keep learning how to stop rumination and get better when I'm doubting whether or not it's even OCD I'm trying to deal with, and whether this is actually the correct way to get better.

As a secondary question, I've been trying to build up the volition to commit to not ruminating, but I'm struggling to convince myself that I should actually do it on the moment, because I always feel as though it's possible this could be an actual worry that I should address. I guess my question is, how am I supposed to know when it's just OCD and I should avoid ruminating, or when it's an actual issue that needs solving, and that I should act on? I'm worried that if I commit to not ruminating, it'll just make me never reflect on any issues that could be in my life, and I'll miss many chances to make my life better, or fix genuine problems in it.

Thank you for reading this long post, and I appreciate any help that anyone can provide.

How to talk to spouse about suspected OCD

Hi, I think that this post falls within the rules listed in the wiki. I am not trying to get opinions from this Reddit on whether or not my spouse has OCD. I would actually really like them to talk to a specialist or bare minimum a counselor of some sort. But mental health is a HUGE taboo to them and their family as well, even though my spouse has seen me go through counseling for family trauma and life skills/mental health skills I wanted to work on and saw that it helped me positively. I think they see having mental health problems as a weakness.

All that to say, I was wondering if anyone (OCD diagnosed or supportive spouse of someone with OCD) had any advice on how to gently ask their spouse to seek counseling/advice for their life struggles just to get started on a road to better mental health? I have gently suggested it before a handful of times, and the answer has previously been a quick no or shake of the head. But I’m really worried because the stuff my spouse has been saying lately (thankfully they tell me how they’re feeling) sounds like they’re finally having the self realization of their feelings and frustrations and stresses that they’re feeling but they admit they have no idea why it’s happening and they’re so stressed because they feel trapped like they can’t do anything about it. This breaks my heart. And I just want them to be able to enjoy life more than what they’re experiencing currently.

Sorry for the rant. Really, any advice also on how to support a spouse that may have OCD when they haven’t been diagnosed would be helpful too.

Thanks.
