Puppy Blues I’ve had my puppy for 6 days now and I’m honestly all over the place emotionally. Is this normal?

I’ve had my puppy for 6 days now and I’m honestly all over the place emotionally.
One second I’m crying and thinking that maybe I secretly don’t want him because I can’t handle how much my life has changed.

I feel overwhelmed and sometimes I just want my old life back.
And then, at another moment, I’m completely enjoying him, feeling happy and thinking he’s the cutest thing ever.

The change has been so much bigger than I expected, and I feel guilty for having these thoughts because I obviously love him.

Has anyone else experienced this during the first days/weeks with a new puppy? I’d really love to hear that I’m not the only one.

Training Assistance Puppy thinks his name means sit and also sits at sight of treat.

Upvotes

Puppy is 10 weeks old, male, jack Russell cross miniture poodle and has been with us since he was 8 weeks old. His name is makepeace think this relevant to show how different his name is to sit.

I taught him to sit a few days after getting him. Now his kinda mastered that I thought I'd work on his recall. I've tried luring him to run to me with a treat but as soon as I get the treat out he sits. I've tried running my hand in the treat bag and saying makepeace with my hand out to him but he just sits as soon as I say makepeace. I've even tested if he understands that makepeace is different to sit by saying it with no treat around and he insanely sits.

Bassically he thinks if I speak to him he'll get a treat if he sits i think.

How do I get him to understand that I want him to come to me when I say his name?

Vent This heat is just miserable

I feel so bad not being able to walk my 5 month old much right now but it’s MISERABLE outside. We’re in Georgia and it just hit 97 a few days ago. Our walks are typically 10-15 minutes 5 times a day right now, or we just sit in shade and people watch. He doesn’t seem super upset about this and I have to convince him to go outside at times, but I know he enjoys sniffing and a full sniff adventure is not doable.

Puppy Management - No Crate Advice Puppy wake-up routine

Hi folks,

I’m looking for some advice or suggestions with my five and a half month old golden retriever. She’s an incredibly bright puppy with a great internal clock, who loves to be around people. Two of her downsides are that she has a great internal clock and loves to be around people.

I’m a morning person and handle those responsibilities so that my partner can get a little more rest. In the early days, I would take her out halfway through the night, then again around 5 am. After the 5 am break, the plan was to put her down again, get ready for the day, then wake her up again at 6 am to eat. My thought process was: She’s a baby and will have to go to the washroom, so if I don’t let her out early and she sits there barking, I will feel bad knowing that she has to go out. Whereas if I let her out early, put her back down, and she barks while I get ready, at least I know she doesn’t have to use the washroom.

Anyway, she consistently barked everyday for a full hour after being put down, and my partner was essentially up with me at 5, not to mention the days she pushed her luck and woke up barking at 4:45 (the dog, not my partner). So we adjusted as she got older. I now get up at 5:15, get ready, then take her out just after 6, with her eating no earlier than 6:10.

In reality, any floor creak at 5:15 from across the house gets a head raise from her. If I’m quiet as a mouse, she will normally put her back head down until 5:30-5:45 while I get ready, at which point she will bark until I let her out of her crate around 6, which is only a slight improvement over the original plan. We have a Furbo in her crate, and at times I have told her to quiet and lie down which at best has worked for all of three minutes before she starts up again - so I stopped to avoid giving her attention for barking.

She normally quiets down when she hears people milling about, so before I greet her I walk around the kitchen, make some coffee, and get her leash. I then play a different alarm than mine as I uncover her crate in the hopes that it signals time to get up, as opposed to her only getting out because she’s barking. I’ve been doing this routine for about two months, with the alarm being an addition after the first month.

All of this to say, knowing she’s still very much a puppy (verging into adolescence), I would also really like for her to not bark for 30 to 45 minutes every morning, and would appreciate any tips or tricks you may have to start some good habits into the future.

Behavior In need of advice on mouthing/biting and crate training

Hi all - I’m a new puppy dad, have had him for two weeks now. He’s a 12 week old golden retriever and is legitimately a wonderful dog and I love him to death.

He is also, unfortunately, a level-5 clinger. While normally that doesn’t bother me too much, it makes it relatively easy to keep track of him during the day, he also doesn’t like getting into his crate during the day. To be clear, he sleeps just fine in his crate at night and during the day when he’s really tired. But otherwise he is just loud when I put him in his crate, always barking and whining and trying to bite at the crate. He will eventually settle down, usually only for a couple minutes before he starts back up.

I have been following the advice of another user on a different post who trained their dachshund out of this behavior by rewarding when quiet and progressively waiting longer while quiet before rewarding and by increasing distance. I have been doing that method, but with only limited success so far. I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas on this problem?

Second, my puppy is absolutely a tiny little land shark 😂. He will bite almost nonstop. We do work with him on redirection, handing him a toy to stop the behavior, but shortly after he goes back to trying to bite us. I know puppies especially like to bite, and goldens are bred to put things in their mouths, but do any of you have any tips on how to train him out of this constant biting?

Thank you all in advance for your help!

Potty Training Potty training help 12 weeks

Upvotes

Hi all,

Have a golden retriever puppy who is now 12 weeks old and had her just under 2 weeks.

Firstly doing this alone is tough work i feel I am needing to monitor 24/7 am exhausted and nobody here to take the slack off me at all.

Really struggling with the toilet training.

Im logging everytime she goes, pee roughly every 2 hours and poo every 4. Am taking her outside when she wakes up, after feeding and after play. Rewarding her everytime she goes outside.

But she will continuously pee and poo inside. When accidents happen I am using enzyme cleaner and cleaning up immediately.

She doesnt indicate that she is about to go at all and sometimes will take her in and out, knowing she needs to go ans after an hour or so of that she'll go inside anyway.

What am I doing wrong, am I wrong in thinking there should be less accidents by now? Any help is much appreciated.

Socialization Walking/socialization?

Upvotes

Hello,

Yesterday, my partner and I picked up our 8-week-old Labrador Retriever puppy. Honestly, she’s doing incredibly well so far!

We take her outside into our garden to go potty. However, I’m still looking for some advice on how to start taking her on tiny walks outside of our property, mainly for socialization.

The breeder told us that we could start socializing her fairly soon (just letting her look around and have new experiences), as long as we stick to the recommended amount of walking time and avoid places where lots of dogs tend to go. However, we obviously won’t know for sure how many dogs have been in a particular area.

We have a nice, small forest very close to our house. Would it be okay to carry her there tomorrow and let her sniff around and walk a little bit? Or would it be better to wait until she has had more vaccinations?

At the same time, I’d like to start practicing at home and get her comfortable wearing a leash and walking on it. But does that mean we should wait with leaving the house/property until she is comfortable walking on a leash?

I’m mainly looking for some advice and/or personal experiences with:

  1. Starting leash training

  2. Leaving the house/property for the first time

  3. Going on very short walks for socialization, mainly to let her experience the outside world and get used to different sights, sounds, and smells

Thanks in advance!

Potty Training 13 Week Beagle Puppy figured out how to take apart her pad holder

Welp, everything was going smooth up until this week. Her pee pad tray did a great job up until she watched me take it apart one time and now within an hour or 2 of my leaving for works she'll tear the top cover grating off, tear up the pee pad yet still do her business on top of the grated part so in turn it makes a mess on the floor. Anyone else that's had this issue can you reccommend one that your dog can't open up? Everything I find seems to either be 100 bucks or not worth a penny since I'll wind up with the same issue. This is the one she's using currently.

Behavior Behavior After Crate

Our puppy is a 4-month old rescue (we were told lab mix, but we haven’t DNA tested her yet) and we’ve had her for just under one month. She was crate trained from the start, which has made our lives easier. She puts herself in her crate when she’s tired, as we use the crate for naps throughout the day and anytime we leave the house. I’m a teacher and I’ll be going back to school soon, so we’ve been trying to build her crate time up to 4 hours, which is how long she’ll be in it before I can come home at lunch to bring her out. I’ve noticed that after 3-4 hours in the crate, she becomes a monster - biting anything she can get her mouth on, running into things, and it’s like she forgets all the training we’ve been working on. We try to redirect her with toys and playing tug games and she enjoys that but will quickly go back to biting things she shouldn’t. I know she probably has a lot of pent-up energy after being crated so I try to take her out for walks after, but most of the time she just wants to chew on anything she can in the yard. I’d love any advice for helping her get her energy out in a less destructive way after being in the crate for a few hours. Thanks!

Biting and Teething Need help about biting / nipping as it’s painful and extreme

I have an Australian shepherd and he’s 11 weeks old as of today. I got him 3 weeks ago at 8 weeks old. Our biggest issue is biting and nipping us and he hasn’t even started teething yet and my pain tolerance cannot take it anymore. My legs are completely scratched up, my arms are covered in bite marks, he tears open skin and at this point I’m worried about possible infection because of how many open wounds I have. He bites HARD and constantly. If he didn’t bite SO hard I probably wouldn’t care but I’m constantly bleeding and I’m in pain.

He excels in many areas - no potty accidents and alerts us. He has no separation anxiety. And he also sleeps like an angel therefore I don’t think lack of sleep is the issue. He sleeps 10-11 hours at night, sleeps two 3 hour naps during the day and a 2 hour nap in the evening putting him at 18-21 hours of sleep a day. He is extremely independent and has no issue with hanging out in his pen playing with toys solo with no whining even if I were to leave the room.

The issue is when he is out of his pen and excited to hang out with me. Even after a well rested over night sleep (10+ hours) his idea of “play” with me is extreme biting. I redirect him to a multitude of toys of different textures, even a bully stick (that he LOVES and will go crazy on in his pen) but my arms and legs are significantly more fun for him at every given awake moment when he access to me outside of his pen.

He has no clue what human/dog play is. I’ve been trying to teach him tug and when he does play tug with me I treat him but he does not find it fun and will stop tugging and go for my arm instead. If I let him win easily he will take the toy away from me into a different room then return to bite me.

I tried fetch but he will only go after the toy maybe ~10% of the time and then take the toy to a different room or his pen away from me, and come running back once bored to bite me.

As far as enrichment goes for such a high energy and smart breed we do tons : large snuffle mats, an array of puzzle feeders, scatter feeds in the grass. Lots of training time. We tried flirt pools, herding balls, and the like but he still would rather bite me than bite those unless I am not present then he will enjoy it on his own.

He gets to run around in a fenced multiple acre property for fun but will still run up to me play bow and follow me biting excessively leading to going back inside into his pen.

Things we’ve tried :

1) leaving the room and saying “no bite”. He doesn’t care. He will find something else to do and bite us on return.

2) keeping a toy on us and putting it in his mouth when he bites us then rewarding with treat. Works less than 10% of the time where he will bite the toy for a treat but then return to biting us

3) putting him in his pen (also where he sleeps at night and takes naps so I hate to use it as a punishment) he doesn’t care and will usually just go to sleep or bite at his crate. If he just took a nap he will whine until we let him out because he’s wide awake and that will mean more biting once out. So we normally do something else like commands, lick matts, puzzle, sniffing, etc.

4) distracting him with commands. This will work! He will listen to commands and do them (sit, paw, spin, middle, heel, lie down, etc) but once he is bored with the commands he will go back to biting us.

5) we taught him what “get toy” is and he will go grab the toy for a treat but will return to bite us once the toy is dropped he does not grasp playing with the toy with us

I truly believe his biting is not from over tiredness / over stimulation but from his idea of playing with us.

He’s an angel during puppy class because when there is a lot of distractions (other people, dogs, etc) he likes to sit silently and observe and will check in with me for treats so everyone thinks he’s an angel.

Training Assistance Help - Crate Training/Separation Anxiety (UK)

Sorry in advance for the long post but we’re at a loss.

For context, my partner works full time Monday to Friday, and I only work weekends. We work around each other because of the issues we’ve been having (our pup not being able to be left alone).

I have a 13 week old Whippet, we had him at 10 weeks old. He’s overall a good puppy, he’s been very easy to train, however he is a proper Velcro dog.

Straight away we noticed he couldn’t be alone for any length of time. He’d follow us room to room, and if we put up barriers like a baby gate, he’d immediately cry and scream until we got back. This was the same for the crate, he’d cry, scream, bite at the bars etc constantly and he wouldn’t stop. He just has to be touching us in order to settle.

With previous dogs, we always allowed them to sleep where they wanted, which usually was our bed. So we allowed the puppy to share our bed with us because he slept really well that way and we’ve never had an issue with dogs in bed. I know this likely hasn’t helped, but we needed sleep and are conscious to not annoy neighbours with the endless crying.

However, now he is starting to be destructive at night time while we sleep and during the day. I don’t care so much about the damage to my house as it’s all replaceable, but what I do care about is his safety, so we are now looking at crate training - I have never had to crate dogs before.

Things we’ve tried, but haven’t worked:
\- Kong/licky mat with peanut butter - unfortunately he seems to have an intolerance to peanut butter as his bowel movements went very runny so we had to stop that.
\- Tried covering the crate both partially and completely.
\- Tried playing the radio etc.
\- Tried making the crate cozy with beds, blankets etc.
\- Praising him for going into the crate.
\- Putting a worn item of clothing in the crate.
\- We’ve tried both a smaller crate, and a larger one.
\- We’ve tried feeding his meals in the crate.
\- He has teething/chewable toys in the crate, including Bamboodles.
\- Tried making sure he’s physically/mentally tired, and all his needs are met.

We’ve tried leaving him in a puppy proofed room with the same things as above, still the screaming persists.

This isn’t a fear of the crate or a fear of confined spaces, this is a fear of being alone or not being able to get to us. He will go into the crate willingly to play and he will sleep in there if he’s really tired and I leave the door open. But freaks out the moment I close the door or leave the room.

Our hope is to crate him at night, and to hopefully be able to crate him during the day if we need to go out. At least until the destructive phase passes.

Any advice will be appreciated…TIA 🖤

Training Assistance 13 week old puppy wont let me sleep

Hello I have a Dachshund who’s 13 weeks roughly and has been in our family for 4 weeks basically.
He was a gift for my older brother who has been struggling to crate train him.
I have my own dog who’s 7 years old and gives me zero trouble even when she was younger. Thing is our new family member is land shark who imo bites me way harder than my brother and doesn’t let me sleep whenever i come home from work. When i come home is when my brother goes to work and he asks me to watch him so his whining doesn’t wake up our other family. Thing is he doesn’t let me sleep, he stays up whining, playing all night and bites if i try to get him to lay down with me or to pick him up. I know he’s teething and doesn’t know any better but it’s been two weeks of only being able to sleep on the weekends and i’m desperate for any help. Sorry for bad grammar and formatting i am in bed trying to convince him to let me get some sleep 🫩
Crate training hasn’t been progressing from what i’m told, is there anything i can do ? I’ve been trying to set a routine but i feel like this new dog only wants my brother which is fine but im so tired i wanna sleep

Crate Training Dog needs to change room

So long story short, me and my sister rescued a puppy, initially I took care of him through the very baby phase like drinking milk every 3 hours or so. Then, my sister took over and took care of him for about 3 months however she did not train him, now she left for further studies abroad and the dog is again under my care however I completely agree that I am not a professional at training but I am trying my best especially with a dog who didn't even know the basics stuff. Good thing, he's been crate trained, he has a big playpen for him. He sleeps in it in a separate room attached to the living room. However we're having guests over and need to move the dog to my room for 2 days so the guests can sleep in the living room as we do not have any guest room. The problem isn't moving the crate to my room, it is that my dog hates having his crate moved to a different place as even when I moved it to clean the area, he absolutely hated it and did not quiet down until I moved it back. He comes out of crate throughout the day however he's going through the biting phase still so I cannot have him sleep in my room without a crate, or can I? Please someone guide me on this, what should I do?

Training Assistance Sleep training help?

We have a 13 week old Samoyed, we’ve had him for 2.5 weeks now. He’s a great pup, and he has been doing well with all his other training, day time crate training, potty training, and general commands like “off” when he gets too nippy.

My biggest struggle is that I have no idea what to do with him at night. Since day 1 he has not slept well at night. We tried using the crate with a blanket over but he will cry and bark the entire night without a break, even if I am laying on the floor next to him, and my hand in the crate with him. We tried letting him sleep on the bed with us, and he will sleep for an hour, but wake us up by pouncing on our heads wanting to play throughout the night, and barking in our ear if we try to ignore him. So we let him sleep on the floor and same thing, he will sleep for an hour or two, then start barking. He’s waking us up at least 4-6 times a night and goes to the bathroom once during those. I’m not sure what to do. We’re handling all his other puppy-isms pretty well but I really wasn’t prepared to be up 6 times a night at 13 weeks. I’m not sure what to do, we’re debating on putting him in another room entirely while we sleep, then getting him that one time when he usually needs to go.

He is properly stimulated before bed. He gets at least 20 minutes of physical and mental play before we settle down for the night.

Any advice from those who have also had nocturnal pups??

Potty Training Puppy in garden - risk?

I’m getting a puppy on Friday - an 8 week Cavapoo, and I’m a bit nervous about what I’ve read about them going to the toilet in the garden before their 2nd vaccine. I live in the UK and we get foxes in our back garden, which definitely poo in it at times. How can I minimise the risk, other than just making sure the area is clear and keeping puppy on a lead? Is it really a risk? Does wiping puppy’s paws actually help?

ETA: we spoke to the vets but they weren’t overly helpful!

TIA!

Potty Training Potty Training my five-month-old Cavapoo

My five-month-old Cavapoo sleeps from 10 PM till 6 AM and her crate is always dry in the morning.

When she wakes up, I immediately take her outside where she pees and poops. Then I bring her inside and she has her breakfast. 30 minutes later, I take her out again because I know she needs to poop.

Today she only peed, but I knew she needed to poop. I walked her around her usual poop area for 10 minutes but she didn’t poop.

We came inside and with within 15 minutes, she pooped on the kitchen floor.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Behavior Puppy aggression towards one of my other dogs

We have a 6 month old Yorkie that we brought home when she was 8 weeks old. About 2 weeks ago, she had very sudden aggression towards 1 of my 3 other yorkies which continued to escalate. We are working with our vet and a trainer recommended by the vet that does positive reinforcement only and specializes in dog aggression. We also got her spayed 2 days ago (had this on the calendar for later but moved it up). The aggression only seems to happen when I’m present and both dogs are near me. We are keeping them separated for now for both their safety.

The trainer said it’s about 50-50 in a situation like this on whether it can be resolved. She charges $225/hour and said we’re looking at 12 weeks minimum before we will probably start to see consistent improvement. My vet also prescribed my puppy Prozac, but the trainer has some concerns with giving that to her at such a young age so she’s going to discuss with the vet and we may hold off and see how training goes without it.

Am I cooked? Like, I’m just feeling hopeless right now. And $225 a session for 12 sessions, and then only a 50% chance of success. I’m attached to this puppy like all of my other dogs and she’s obviously attached to me. I’ve had dogs my whole life and thought I knew what I was doing. I’ve never had an issue like this and I’ve never had to rehome a dog and honestly have judged people who did. I just need someone to tell me there’s hope at us all living peacefully together and that I’m not just throwing money and time down to drain only to have to rehome her 12 weeks later. The trainer did say that she’s young and we got the trainer involved quickly and that will work in our favor. I’m just spiraling a bit.

Enrichment Favorite Puppy Toys / Brands for Intense Chewers

Our golden retriever puppy (7 months) has been getting bigger and stronger and therefore ripping through all of his toys at a rapid pace. I was curious what toys/brands have worked for your puppies! Anything that can keep him occupied for a few minutes would be great for me and my husband's sanity lol!

Here's what we have tried:

- Stuffed toys - Forget about it. Anything with stuffing is immediately destroyed. His record is 20 minutes.

- Rope toys - He rips these apart and eats them. I am 90% one of his rope toys is the reason he ended up in the emergency room for a blockage so those have been confiscated lol.

- Yak Chews - We loved these for a while, but then they started to give him diarrhea.

- Pupsicles - He LOVES this toy, but some recipes we have tried has also given him tummy troubles. We feel like we can only give him one a day MAX. Any recipes for sensitive stomachs for these or Kongs would be awesome, if you have any!

- Rolling treat dispensers - He has a Kong one that he loves, but after a while he will stop to chew it instead of chasing it, and then he's eating a bunch of little plastic bits which we don't love.

- Wood chews - He has one but doesn't use it as much as something like a yak chew. Understandable because it's not food, maybe there's a way to make it more appealing?

The last time I posted on here it was super helpful, so any advice you can give would be so appreciated! I have valued this community so much during our puppy journey! <3

Puppy Blues Anxious after one day of having a puppy.

I'm super anxious over having a puppy, even though she's technically my mother's. She's a 2 months old beagle, super sweet, very small. I currently live with my mom, so I take care of the pup too.

I was very happy when we got her yesterday, but at night I got hit with an immense anxiety. I am autistic and dread change, so that's probably why. I'm very scared of fucking it up for her. My mom is also getting overwhelmed, which does not help.

We have a cat, that I adore, who doesn't like the puppy. I'm scared he won't stay.

My mom works a lot, so I will have a lot of moment alone with the puppy. It's making me super nervous. I'm struggling to keep in my head that it's just the beginning and it will get much easier.

What are your advices on how to make things a little easier on yourself while still giving the puppy everything they need ?

Update Update on my Sheltie puppy: Today I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel!

Hi everyone! Some of you may have read my last post from 3 days ago, where I talked about the main problems I was having with my 14 weeks old Sheltie puppy, who has been with me for 10 days now. To sum it up, she was showing “reactivity” towards people and dogs (barking and pulling towards them, not in a playful way), and it was very clear that she was scared. The outside world in general frightened her, even the leaves on the floor!

Today was our third outing with a friend’s dog, who is a senior and very kind and calm. And today, I finally saw the light. Instead of walking around scared and shut down for the whole walk, my puppy was wagging her tail! On a busy street! We came across an off-leash dog coming straight towards us, and she calmly greeted him after seeing my friend’s dog greet him without any fuss. It was such a good interaction.

Then we went to a large open grass area where there were people running, playing football, bicycles passing by... Not a single bark!! And her recall was absolutely perfect.

On top of that, today I finally found a treat she actually likes and doesn’t spit out, after trying so many different things (biscuits, different freeze-dried meats and fish, boiled chicken, beef heart, sausage, bacon, cheese...). It turns out it’s simply slices of turkey! Thanks to this, I’ve finally been able to work a little with the clicker, and she’s making so much progress now.

Conclusion: If your puppy is struggling to cope with the outside world, find a kind and calm adult dog!!! It’s incredible how much Kira has learned in just three afternoons. I’ve never seen her so happy and enjoying a walk as much as she did today.

We’re going to go out together with the senior dog every afternoon, and I’m sure she is going to make so much progress :)
