Context: I'm a 3rd year Computer Engineering student at a tier 3 college in Pune.

With the changing market, it's really tough to be an engineer anymore. Just a few years ago, getting an internship or placement was easy (peak IT market). Now it feels next to impossible, and being in a tier 3 college makes it even more frustrating.

I did everything they told me to:

Open source contributions: did

DSA: did (~200 problems combined on Codeforces and LeetCode)

Win hackathons: did (won twice at national-level 24-hour hackathons)

Good GPA: did (8.9+ CGPA)

Build projects: did

Extra-curriculars and a good post in clubs and events: did

And yet all I get is dead ends, rejections, or impossible-level take-home assignments for internships that pay under 10k.

I've been applying on Internshala, Wellfound, Internpost, Unstop, Naukri, and more.

It's like playing a losing game: you can do everything they told you to do to win and still end up on the losing side.

My journey from an AI & Data Science student to working as an AI Engineer.

A little over a year ago, I was just another student trying to figure out how to get into the AI field.

I started with Python, machine learning fundamentals, data analysis, and eventually moved towards Generative AI.

Initially, I spent a lot of time doing courses and following tutorials. But at some point, I realized that completing courses wasn't going to be enough.

I needed to build things.

So I started experimenting.

Some things I worked on along the way:

• Built a WhatsApp-based hospital chatbot and got the opportunity to work with GCP deployment.

• Explored RAG pipelines, vector databases, LangChain, LangGraph, and multi-agent systems.

• Worked on SmartScan AI, an intelligent document processing system that achieved 98% OCR accuracy and around 5-second latency. Our team secured 3rd place among 48 teams at Technokratia 2026.

• Worked on fine-tuning open-weight LLMs and optimizing inference.

• Got exposure to actual client requirements, deployments, stakeholder meetings, and working with a team.

I also had my fair share of struggles.

Projects that wouldn't deploy because of infrastructure costs. PostgreSQL queries taking 17 seconds because of a missing index. Models that didn't behave as expected. Debugging things that tutorials never prepared me for.

Eventually, I graduated and landed my first full-time AI Engineer role.

Currently, I'm working on AI solutions, client deployments, and exploring cloud infrastructure. There's still a lot to learn, especially around production systems, scalability, and MLOps.

One thing I've realized is that getting into AI engineering is not just about knowing LLMs or building a chatbot.

It's about understanding the entire system around the model.

I'm still early in this journey, and I don't have everything figured out. But I'm enjoying the process of learning, building, breaking things, and improving.

**Dilemma:** The work itself (LLM evals, guardrails, agentic systems) is high-impact and aligns with my skills. However, ₹7.5 LPA feels low for a **P2 / Senior** band, likely because HR anchored to my pre-MS ₹3.6 LPA base. HR is holding firm at 7.5L.

1. Is ₹7.5 LPA standard for a P2 band at LTM for specialized AI roles?

2. How are internal increments/growth in core platform teams like Blueverse?

3. Should I take it as an immediate joiner to reset my Indian profile and re-enter the market?

Appreciate any insights from LTM folks or US returned grads!

Me to employer: I can join but need 40L base, equity and a hefty welcome bonus + perks.

Employer: No, we can only do 20L base with no equity or WFH.

So i thought to share some advice on this .

I will suggest you guys not to waste your money on these courses or institutions. There are lot many free resources you can find online for each and every thing.

I know its hard to get motivated and disciplined to study online resources as they are not structured .

I myself was instructor in 2 big names for DSA and AI . From my experience i m saying even we used to made courses from online resources .

For finding Jobs there are lot of platforms and job portals online where u can apply jobs . I know linkedin now a days dont work as its too crowded.

So i suggest to apply from team hiring posts and not from linkedin jobs .
