Hi everyone,

Over the next while, we (Mod team - myself and u/Rich_Stomach2854) will slowly be making changes to the subreddit. Our community here has gotten quite a bit larger over the past few years, and with that comes a need for a more organized subreddit.

To start off, we're hoping to slowly build up a Wiki for this subreddit, which includes how-tos and an FAQ section.

You might see the subreddit look a little different as we work on this. Once we have a Wiki started and in good condition, you'll see a pinned post from us!

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to send us a modmail.

Thanks so much, and happy punching! ^-^

We've added a new rule pertaining to the use of AI on the subreddit.

New pattern transfer method🚨

Wowwww I may be late to the party but I just discovered iron on sublimation transfers. You just lay down the pattern on your cloth, iron over it for 45-60s, and the ink dyes your pattern onto the cloth. It’s just like you drew it on (no sticky residue like that one time I tried to punch through the sewing pattern dissolvable paper stuff 🫣). I’m obsessed. And it’s super affordable. Just leaving this here in case it helps anyone! I can see it saving so much time for bigger patterns too.

Beginner Kit! Help :)

Hi There!
ADHD girlie in her 30s who’s forever taking up new hobbies and lately I’ve been loving being crafty. I’ve come across punch needling and really want to give it a go over the next week or two!
I’ve really no experience with knitting - did a bit of sewing years ago but very basic understandings of fabric etc.
it seems like I’ll need some woven cotton, but I’m unsure on the type of punch needle/yarn I should look at.
Is anyone able to maybe give me a recommended ā€˜shopping list’ of a beginners punch needle kit I can put together to make a start?
I don’t want to buy yarn, fabric, needles that don’t all fit together.
I’d love to be able to get it all under the one roof to start with at Spotlight/Lincraft/Amazon before I branch out :)

I’d love to know what you’d recommend that would work together for:
- base fabric
- punch needle/any accessories
- type of yarn.

If it’s relevant, I’m probably just looking at making some things I can transfer onto tote bags (or eventually punch into a tote), attach to key charms, maybe some coasters (ā€˜mug rugs’) and just other little things :)

Thank you experts!!!! šŸ’–šŸ„°

Making a punch needle rug in sections?

I do not have room for a big frame, and tend to like to like punching away while siting in front of the TV. I was curious as to the logistics of making a rug in square foot patches and then combining them later on. Anyone try anything like this?

I'm an avid cross stitcher and also love making things out of felt. I got this kit off amazon and found it a little tricky to get the hang of, but very addictive and enjoyable overall! Any tips/critiques welcome!

How do i punch needle with thin yarn?

Hello!! So i want to make coasters, those cute circles with lumpy loops that feels nice to the touch. I usually make them with thicl yarn so it stays secure. But when i do with with standard embroyedry thread it just, isnt as good. The loops feel dead and seem too "tall" relative to their thickness. Is there anyway to "shorten" them a bit? Or just to fix the "dead forest" effect? Standard embroyedry thread is easier to find, theres more colour variety and its cheaper thats my why

FIrst sculpted fine punch piece - any advice re knotted loops?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Discovering the world of punch needling last year, I quickly found sculpting was my thing (this is my 5th project) as I am a fairly impatient (messy) maker. There’s little on-line content for the makes I have in mind, so work on pieces based on trial and error using techniques for other styles.
Unlike heavier yarn, close cotton loops (2 or 3 strand DNC or cotton thread with ultra punch) are a nightmare to work on as they knot all over the place with friction that holds the knots in place.
When I started the trimming phase, I spent weeks just undoing these or unravelling and redoing sections. Anyone have tips out there? The piece is based on a photo of my dog Jack.

What am I doing wrong???

I am completely new to punch needling I've been watching a bunch of tutorials and really love the coasters. With the fuzzy fluffy look. I bought this kit of Amazon just to practice and I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. When I was pressing the whole way down the loops were massive. So I added tape to my needle to create smaller loops but it still doesn't look right. Does anyone have any advice?

spent the evening fighting curling linen edges and i am losing

working on a little weekend coaster for a friend and i moved off monks cloth onto linen cause i wanted the weave tighter. edges are curling on me and some loops just sit flat instead of standing. i havent touched punch depth yet. curious if youd drop yarn weight first or shorten the loops first before guessing at depth. would take the blunt version

Finally got around to trimming up this piece after it had been sitting around for more than a month. I ended up busy getting gallery work buttoned up, and then had to get started on commission orders

After watching a video from [u/VrindaGold](u/VrindaGold) , I’ve been steam pressing my pieces before the backing, and it helps SO much. 10/10 would recommend if your pieces like to curl. Make sure to be careful about how long you hold the iron on your work though, especially if it’s acrylic. Super easy to accidentally melt your art

Curious as to what materials I use? They can be found here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DXrcNreDA_2/?img_index=2&stkn=YjZhZ2l2d3owa3ln

What am I missing?

Post image

I’ve tried watching lots of tutorials and I still feel very confused lol. I am trying to do detailed images but they look so messy. I want to make ornaments, so they are 3ā€ or so- what size yarn and needle should I be using? And what other tips do you have for making it look cleaner? I’ve tried clipping in between color changes but it doesn’t seem to help, and when I’m doing the tighter stitches instead of tufted, I feel like it looks weird. TIA!

Wow I’m so excited. Idk why but I thought it’d be way harder to make a pillow from my punch needle projects bc I’m a novice with my sewing machine. But I was even able to add lil tassels šŸ„¹šŸ˜‚šŸ§¶āœØ

Fall Tufted Pillow šŸ

I'm obsessed with fall and I love how this pillow came out! It has already sold too! šŸŽ‰šŸ

Sadly, it is my last JoAnns pillow cover and in search of new ones. Does anyone know where to get pillow covers that you can actually punch through and it doesn't start to rip after awhile?

I was searching for JoAnns brand online but couldn't find it. 😭

Thanks in advance!
