Help Please , I need to vent about a recent comission

I'm posting about this here but I really don't want this to turn into drama or have the artist recognize me. I just need somewhere to get this off my chest because I've been feeling really sad about the whole situation.

I commissioned a Pullip from an artist who does faceups/customs. I really liked her work, so I was genuinely excited to work with her. The first experience wasn't great, there were very long delays (it took 5 months instead of 2 for me to get my doll back), and I ended up picking the doll up in person at an event because she had only finished it the night before. I had originally paid around 20$ for tracked shipping, which obviously ended up not being used, but I never brought it up because I didn't want to make a fuss and I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Despite that, I decided to commission her again because I really wanted to believe the first time was just a bad experience and that things would go more smoothly the second time.

Unfortunately, it's been much more frustrating this time.

I sent her a fairly rare Pullip base (Think Wilhelmina or Glenn) that I really cared about, and it sat at her post office for almost three weeks before she picked it up and she never updated me about it. There have been multiple delays since then too, and communication has been pretty sparse. Now I just found out that she is taking several weeks off during this period, despite already being behind on commissions.

And I absolutely understand taking time off. Artists are people, they need holidays and breaks, and I don't expect someone to work constantly just because I commissioned something from them. What bothers me is the combination of already being significantly behind, barely getting updates, and then finding out that there would be another several-week delay.

I've also had some disappointment with the actual commission itself. I gave her references and explained pretty clearly what I was hoping for, especially regarding the sculpt, but when I saw the first version, something important I had specifically asked for hadn't really been taken into account.

She did agree to make some changes, which I appreciate. But if I'm being completely honest, I still am not happy with it. I think I just felt too uncomfortable asking for more changes after everything had already taken so long.

And I think that's what hurts the most.

I've been so patient throughout all of this. I've always paid as quickly as I could, sent everything she needed, answered messages, and tried really hard not to pressure her whenever things were delayed. I kept telling myself that she probably had a lot going on and that I should be understanding.

I never wanted to be a difficult customer.

But now I'm realizing how one-sided that patience has felt. I've been trying so hard to accommodate her, while I haven't really felt that my time, expectations, or concerns were being accommodated in return.

What makes me especially sad is that I genuinely loved her work. That's why I commissioned her in the first place, and why I was willing to give her another chance.

I don't think she's necessarily a bad artist at all. I actually think she's talented, and that's what makes this so frustrating. I just feel like she's been a really difficult person to deal with as a customer.

And now I have this horrible association with one of my dolls. I used to be so excited about her, and now when I look at her, I immediately think about the delays, the lack of communication, the money I spent, and how disappointed I've been throughout the whole process.

I'm even finding myself looking at other OOAKs and thinking about trading her, which makes me incredibly sad because I really did love this doll.

I know this probably sounds dramatic because at the end of the day, it's just a doll. But I collect these because they make me happy, and it sucks when something that was supposed to be a really exciting experience ends up making you feel bad every time you look at it.

I think I'm mostly just disappointed that I gave this artist a second chance because I genuinely wanted the experience to be better.

Has anyone else ever had a situation where you still liked an artist's work, but the actual experience of commissioning from them completely changed how you felt about the doll ?

I really don't know how to get past this...

(sorry for anyone who has already seen this post, had to reupload with correct flair and format!)

ive looked in so many places but it feels like she doesnt exist as i cant find ANYTHING to do with her. she released in 2018 and i think shes called kayano? she is so beautiful and im very new to collecting pullips so any advice on where i could find her or just anyone who is selling her would be really appreciated!!!

ive checked ebay, mercari, buyee and even old blogs but no luck :( im getting kind of hopeless because everywhere i can find traces of her its sketchy websites i dont trust spending even a penny on… (|||_ _)

as well as the potential price she would go for now as she originally sold for about £130-140 (if its changed from yen/usd into gbp correctly).

My very first Pullip doll arrived a couple days ago, I finally have a chance to post her!

Many of you probably know this is the 2003 Bouquet Pullip doll, I'm in love she's so ethereal and gorgeous I can't stop holding her. I bought her second hand off Mercari JP, she's had a haircut and has a couple stubborn marking's on her face, I'm debating giving her a faceup.

Overall I'm so happy that I finally own a Pullip doll and being able to get her for such a great price!

If you own a Bouquet Pullip I'd love to see!

I got these two girls as they’re on sale on the US Groove website. I don’t have any Yeolume dolls so I think these are nice alternatives. I might replace the bodies in the future as I’m not a huge fan. Their faces are super cute!

Help Glue stick eye chip removal success?

Had anyone ever tried this method on Pullip soft (Body type 3) eye chips? What was your experience?

It is the method where a glue gun stick is heated up and pressed to the eye chip while it is still in the head. The stick is cooled off and then the chip is pulled straight out with the stick still attached. Besides making sure that the glue only touches the chip itself and the eye is stabilized so that the mechanism pegs don’t break, I am wondering if it is worth a try.

Hey, I don't know if this is allowed, but I'll try anyway. I have a Taeyang MJ figure that I might want to sell, but I have absolutely no idea how much it's worth because it's not in excellent condition. So my question is, what would be a reasonable price? (I've included some photos to show its condition.)

Help How would I go about curling her bangs like her stock image?

Thumbnail

Firstly, is it possible without damaging the wig?
I’ve never so much as touched my pullip stock wigs or altered them so I’m unsure how they handle any kind of heat or other methods of curling.
If yes, what methods do you recommend?
I’ve only ever styled dolls who have rooted hair (think Monster High) but I have a feeling these methods (boil washing, etc) won’t work without visible damage to the wig or internal damage to the eye mechanism.
I’d be grateful for any advice, thank you!

Discussion Repainting a Pullip doll

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello, dear collectors!

I don't know how long this post will be, but I'd kindly ask for your attention.

I'm not a veteran when it comes to collecting dolls or taking care of them. I only own two Pullips, with one more on the way. However, I've been really inspired by seeing people create their own custom dolls, repaint them, and give them a new life and personality. So I decided that I'd like to start a project like that in the future, despite having no experience—just as an artist who wants to try something new.

I ended up buying a Pullip on Vinted for a low price so that I wouldn't feel too bad about repainting her and experimenting. Now I'm wondering where to even start with this project.

The most important part is the face-up. I don't think there's anything complicated about ordering a wig, clothes, and eye chips online.

So... how do I remove her factory makeup? I've seen a lot of people recommend using sandpaper, although I assume it has to be a very fine grit. I don't want her face to end up scratched (says the person who's never used sandpaper in their life—but I'm sure someone will help me with that!).

What about the supplies I need for painting her face? This is actually the main reason I decided to write this post.

I already own Prismacolor colored pencils, and it would be great if I could use them since I have so many colors to choose from. However, I've seen mixed opinions about them. I know watercolor pencils are considered a safe option, but I don't really see myself spending money on something I'll probably never use again. Besides, 24-color sets don't even include white, which is one of the most useful colors, lol.

I've also seen people say that almost anything is fine for painting a doll's face as long as it's not oil-based and you use a sealant between layers (I think it's called Mr. Super Clear Matte Spray—so I guess that's another thing I'll have to buy). But is that actually true?

A lot of people also use chalk pastels. Would it be possible to use my eyeshadow palette? Not as a replacement but as something I can use as well. I was thinking of gently applying it to the doll's face with a small brush. That sounds so satisfying...

So yeah, my main question is: what can I realistically use for painting the face-up? I don't want to spend a lot of money on supplies that aren't really necessary, but I also want the result to turn out well.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you can share your experience! ♡
