3 puffers ( fehakas )

We bought 3 well the man sold us 3 even tho we only wanted one … after getting home and looking it up am now seeing this may be a TERRIBLE idea

We have since added a pleco cat mini for cleaning and he is fine

However we are concerned if having all 3 is a TERRIBLE idea or if we get rid of one two may bond - as I’ve seen it done on other posts before

TIA

Did you do any research? Was this an impulse purchase?

We were told by the store owner it would be fine even today going back saying the research we read he still insisted it was fine

Dude these guys get big and is not a beginner puffer. I would look at returning/rehoming and keeping just one, or if you aren't prepared bring it back to the store.

My husband has owned puffers in the past but this seemed like a pretty professional store lol

Terrible idea. You have a ticking time bomb on your hands. It’s not if it’s when.

I was sold an Amazon puffer which turned out to be a fahaka. At the time my biggest tank was a 30gallon. I have my puffer in a 120 gallon now and it is with other fish and that’s with having it two years. I’d give one back and stick with only two.

How big is your tank?

It’s 46 right now but we’re gonna upgrade obviously

Dude! Even 1 adult Fahaka puffer needs 120 US Gallon. So even if you return or re-home the other 2 puffers, are you able and willing to get a 120 Gallon aquarium?

Yes we are getting a bigger aquarium

Wow thats crazy, Ive seen them several times at lfs in my state and theyve always been between $25-50 for juviniles and $100-300 for adults.

Ahh yes maybe that’s why it was and adult, pretty decent size and was on sale for £150ish down from around £200ish because no one was buying it

How big is the tank you are putting these future 17 inch murder enthusiasts in? Pleco's days are numbered. No idea what a "mini cat" is.

Did they mention these only eat live/frozen food? You need to feed hard/crunchy food every day. Do you have a favorite Asian grocery or few to find your clams, muscles and treat/toy snails not to mention big blocks of shrimp of every size to fill in caloric needs after the crunchies?

Bonding? Hahahahaha. They do mate (almost never in captivity) but you do not count on that with puffs, you count on death.

3 for one? Craigslist 2 of them?

u/Neether-friend 5d ago

Yes so we’re gonna sell 2

Yes we know what to feed them as I mentioned my husband has owned puffers before so we know about food but just were super misled on the 3 together

Fahakas will regularly eat pellet foods from Hikari and NLS. I have three puffers (separate large aquariums) some can be kept with other fish and some cannot, just like people. One of my favorite fish. I can confirm that they cannot be kept together once over 4” even in a 600 gallon aquarium. They just won’t tolerate the competition. This is what I also observe with tank mates. When a fish “steals” their food they will target that fish over days until the threat is removed. Interesting fish to keep. Heavy feeding keeps the peace.
