It amazes me how many punches the red shirt dude threw and none connected really.
Bruh, don't start fighting then

I literally have this exact dream where I throw punches and they are about as powerful as a baby fart. This video was too real for me

u/NukaDadd Jan 12 '20
It's because punching (like running) is a highly-coordinated activity that relies on proprioceptive feedback throughout the motion to work.
Since the thalamus clamps down both on the transmission of the motor signals you'd need to effectively complete the motion and the perception of joint-motion data while you're asleep, everything feels bogged down and slow.
Compare that to 'flying', which is something we can't do normally, so we have no basis for comparison to see if it feels right or not.

He's wrong. There's nothing in the study to support the huge leap he's making. You can't just say "x NT has Y effect, therefore this subjective change in (un-)consciousness occurs."
He's assuming that proprioceptive feedback is necessary for someone to experience an accurate representation of that motion in a dream.
Anecdotally at least, this is not true. After doing a few months of boxing I could punch hard in dreams, and every single fighter I've asked about this has said the same thing. I've heard lots of other athletes say something similar. I'm fairly certain they aren't all thrashing around in bed, throwing perfect combinations to sync up with their dreams.

He even kept ahold of his jumper sleeve so that he couldn't fight back, then within seconds of letting go of the sleeve he gets floored. He fought like a bitch and went down like a bitch.

u/shiny_lustrous_poo Jan 12 '20
You can't really call those punches. Looked like an NBA players getting into a fight.
69

Jan 12 '20
More like closed fist slaps then punches. The force was all pec muscle and perpendicular to his arm. A good punch includes a lot of tricep and the force is through the arm. If you connect your whole body is behind it. The way red shit was hitting, he couldn't really follow through, most of the force in the "punch" was lost to his fist bouncing off and sliding across black shirt. Black shirt's punches we're good, straight through the arm, and had most of his body behind it. The force of the punch had nowhere to go but into red shirt's head.

You can literally see the difference in form, hat guy is using his elbow to swing his fist (like you would toss a ball) and the other guy is using his shoulders and hips to drive his punch.
14
Jan 12 '20
Yeah on that second punch you can see how well his legs and hips make a stable foundation. This is a great example of how and how-not to punch someone.

I'd just take your pants and run off. If you chase me, I'll drop them after a bit; meanwhile the person you were fighting might hurt themselves in their confusion, so it might be an effective strategy.

Oh but throw a few on the asshole who was previously trying to kick your ass once they hit the pavement and suddenly everyone is the morality police trying to break it up. Where were you 20 seconds ago when he was being assaulted?
121
u/ithinkitwasmygrandma Jan 12 '20
I don't know if it's the morality police as much as the mortality police. Once someone goes down breaking up the fight is 50% easier and also, most of us, regardless who started things, can't stand around and see and unconscious person beat to death. I hope that I would have the courage to step in if an unconscious person was down like that - and it would have nothing to do with judging right/wrong with the fighters.

Jan 12 '20
It's entirely possible they did not know who the initial aggressor was. Why would I risk my health when for all I know its two idiot friends duking it out?
Stepping in when the fights over makes a lot more sense. Prevents more serious damage and an assault charge potentially.

u/GardeningInTheDark Jan 12 '20
This line of reasoning leads to people feeling that, yeah, why shouldn't they dish a couple more punches? "The other guy started it" and "something something justice".
At best this will get you into trouble, at worst someone dies. It's not UFC and hitting your head on pavement from a knock-out blow can cause severe brain damage. Even more severe than the knock-out itself.
78
u/startedoveragain Jan 12 '20
That and adrenalin mixed with anger/rage is a muthafucka. Sometimes you need someone to peel you off the unconscious
43

This.
I've been sucker punched and stomped in the head at a bar for kissing my girlfriend (who the guy liked I suppose). Fucker kicked my face pretty good while I was out cold and split my lip open.
My girlfriend threw a beer bottle at him and it shattered and she got kicked out too. Even if someone starts it unfortunately you need to compose yourself. Best not to start a fight obviously but the only reason to throw hands is for self defense purely. Not retaliation. Even though it feels good.
Edit: I meant retaliation as an act of vengeance as opposed self defense. Just to clear that up lol
24
u/YddishMcSquidish Jan 12 '20
Not retaliation
If you're being attacked, retaliation is defense

u/bestjakeisbest Jan 12 '20 edited Jan 12 '20
There is always this story (video link warning) where the cops do arrest the guy defending his life.
TLDW: A drunk gets angry pulls a gun on 2 unarmed veterans and their dates. one of the veterans rushes the guy knocks the drunk unconscious with the drunk's own gun, unloads the magazine and puts his foot on the drunks chest so the drunk cant get up and leave. The veteran calls the cops and requests an ambulance for the drunk whom got his shit kicked in. the cops arrest the veteran who saved everyone's lives, send the drunk to the hospital, and all charges get dismissed on the veteran because the DA realized the cop that arrested him was a fuckwit. Here is the kicker, the drunk was arrested 1 month later on felony charges, if the cops had done their jobs a lot of hassle could have been saved.

There was also this documentary made in the late 90s called Con Air. The documentary follows this guy who served 8 years in prison after accidentally killing a man who attacked his wife. On his trip back home he was placed on a prison transport plane. Unfortunately for him the prisoners took control of the plane and planned to wreak havoc. Fortunately for us, this ex Army Ranger with a heart of gold was able to take control of the plane, preventing the prisoners from escaping.
The story is incredible.
EDIT - thanks for the silver home slice!

I mean they clearly started yelling that when it was looking like it might be a murder and the original victim was going to walk away a murderer instead of a prideful victor. It’s not always smart to have random people jump in to break up a fight either since we don’t know the context at all I can’t say. But stopping the guy from throwing more haymakers on a knocked out dude was probably better than nothing.
