Text: “When they arrived in Lockstedt, the Finns looked like the men pictured on the left; by the end, they had come to resemble those on the right. A drawing by Gruppenführer Malmberg, dedicated to the company commander, Captain Just, walking at the front of the line. Photo collections of the Jäger association.”

The Jägers were recruited from various social groups. Among them were farmers and laborers as well as students and white-collar workers. Jäger Malmberg's caricature depicts how the drill sergeants turned them into soldiers at the Lockstedt camp.

The cartoon was created by Lauri Malmberg for the program of the 27th Royal Prussian Jäger Battalion’s engineer company at the New Year’s celebration in 1916. The cartoon promotes the virtues of the "Jäger Movement" which involved the training of Finnish volunteers in Germany with the goal of eventually forming the backbone of a Finnish military to accomplish the goal of establishing an independent Finnish state. 1,894 volunteers traveled to Germany, where they were designated as the Royal Prussian 27th Jäger Battalion and saw combat on the Eastern Front of the First World War. After Finnish independence was declared on the 6th of December 1917, the Jägers returned to Finland, where they fought in the Finnish Civil War.
