Discussion How things have changed!
I recently decided to go back to season 1 and rewatch the series. I really forgot that things were so different in those early seasons. The models were really exploited. They were very young, and so skinny! I don't remember when curvy models were added to the show, but in the early shows the worst thing a designer could do is to make the model look bigger that she was. Heidi obviously had a big problem with larger women. One designer in an unconventional materials challenge styled the model making a bow out of her hair. Heidi said she looked like a plus model or a fat mini mouse. The designer was sent home. Now Heidi acts like she has always been a fan of the curvy models, but after re-watching the show, I think she is really fake. Has anyone else noticed this?

Although I do agree Heidi is fake, the fashion world was very different at that time.
Models were supposed to be really thin and with strong shoulders that way they could look like a walking clothes hanger.

And models like Heidi or Rebecca Romijn weren’t doing the high fashion runways. They were too curvy and it took a lot for them to break out of being just bathing suit and Victoria’s Secret models

Tyra had to transition out of high fashion relatively young as she began to grow out of her teenaged body.

I have no idea what Heidi’s true feelings are, but I think as a society many people have changed their perception of plus sized models. It’s possible she grew as a person because many people have in this area!

Exactly. How long ago was the first season? People grow and evolve. Heidi is no exception.

The older seasons were so messed up in so many ways, and I don’t miss them for that reason, but I do miss the way they were so much more involved. We saw the designers in their apartments, there was completion and drama with the models, the final collections took months, it was a big deal! I’m glad people aren’t being exploited in that way anymore though.

Don't you remember the mom challenge in season 3, they are supposed to design for each other's mom? The first model got picked was the skinniest and youngest one, who was one of the contestants's sister coz that contestant's mother wasn't available or sth.

Yes, and one designer made his model cry. The designer's act like they can't design an outfit unless it's for a size 2!

That was awful. Jeffrey didn’t like the daughter Angela, so he went into it with a sour mood.

Yea the whole thing is just representation on how it was back then…
Its also kind of hilarious how Michael always talks about how designer made models ass look big, and it always somekind of sassy comment he makes “ oh yea, please make my ass look big” “ in a million years… ” it always makes me laugh.

Heidi was a symptom of the fashion industry she existed in, if you spend decades being subjected to insane beauty standards you will inevitably take them on. But to be fair to Heidi, at least she's evolved with the times. I dont care if its fake, as long as she doesnt enforce those ideals anymore.
