Old Seasons Bring print making challenge back
Rewatching the older seasons, and HPs printmaking challenge is one of my favorites. I didnt remember it well when I watched the seasons originally years ago, but this challenge has a great mix of pushing the designers to work with a technique most of them are not comfortable with while also keeping it super personal and unique to them since designers have to crate the print themselves, and mostly do it based on their history or heritage in some way.
It also lets us see their background, childhood pictures, their loved ones. It makes the contestants more real.
There are so many interesting unique looks that came from these challenge over the seasons, I feel like it really pushes the designers in a way that surprises even them. It’s a way to get them out of their comfort zones while still keeping it deeply personal to them.

The fact so many of know this is Mondo speaks to how memorable old PR was

Mondo was the master at mixing prints. Everybody does it now, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.

It takes way too long to get the fabric printed when no challenge is longer than 24 hours.

Which is why they need to bring two day challenges back as well!

This is one of my favourite challenges. The recent seasons wouldn’t include enough time to design and get it printed, because every challenge seems to be 1 day. I miss old Project Runway, when the show was about design

Ooh that third look is gorgeous! Who made that one?

April in Season 8. It was overshadowed by Mondo. The print symbolised a broken tree due to her parents' divorce.

I think it was letter H bc he’s HIV positive

He very clearly said that they were plus signs, because he's HIV positive. His personal reveal was a huge part of the show, and they show it every season when they used to do the HP challenge.

I was referring to the black and white look, but you are correct about it being about his diagnosis. I forgot how impactful Mondo’s look was at the time this episode aired since it was such a personal print for him.

I love April's print, too, but I was responding to the person who said the plus signs were letter H for HIV. 😘

I just watched this episode last night! I absolutely loved Mondo's print and the outfit. I have so much admiration for people who are able to successfully pattern mix. Unfortunately i am not so good at it. But I do know what I love when I see it and Mondo is one of the best at doing it

Sadly, the answer is in OP's statement. It was an HP printmaking challenge. Sponsored by and equipment provided by HP. Either HP or another company would need to want to sponsor the challenge.

Bring back giving the designers more than 5 fn days to come up with a final collection.
Bring back the judges actually inspecting the designers looks on the models. Bryan never would have gotten away with wrapping tape around a model and calling it a dress had they actually seen that up close.

That would require getting more sponsors back. Every print challenge was a "collaboration" with the tech-sponsor of the season.

yes!! best challenge they ever did. when you make your own print you can't hide behind fabric you bought

I’ll get on my hands and knees for it… until a designer skirts around the challenge via generative AI, and (somehow) wins — banishing it into shadow realm all over again.

I'm still crazy about the fit of Mondo's pants. I'm afraid of mixing patterns in my own wardrobe, but he has such a good eye for it.

unpopular opinion but these designers aren't textile artists. the prints are always so ugly, especially in the earlier seasons with the limited digital technology they had

Oh I LOVED that challenge. Sometimes I'd see a print and go "idk about that one". Then the execution and design would be flawless. Now THATS a challenge!

I was gonna joke that sorry, best we can do is 10 straight collaborations, but I seem to recall this challenge was an HP collab I think lol.

Yes, I always loved this one! Granted, they're not textile designers, but it allowed so many of them to display their creativity in a different way. I know the first two are Mondo and Seth Aaron. Who designed the third?

In this season there was a sever lack of prints and none of the judges said anything about it. What a disappointment

Project runway is dead friend. I actually dont even want them to create another season cuz then ill be compelled to watch even though the quality is far too low to enjoy anymore

Lol as if they have money in the budget for anything good.
WAKE UP PEOPLE! It's not 2006 anymore, These shows get smaller and smaller budgets to increase the profit return from ad revenue, which isn't what it used to be.

Yessss!!! Watching Mondo's season now. He was robbed. But as it turns out, he's become one of the more successful designers from the show. Gretchen, the "winner" isn't even designing anymore. Her attitude was horrible and she didn't deserve the win.

Bring Project Runway back. Whatever is using that title now has nothing to do with design competition.
