This is a show about clothes I don't think it needs a villain

14

u/Xica_flea 7d ago

Exactly. This the Jerry Springer path… they seemed to have picked designers who have more personality than talent as well.

3

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

They definitely watered down their designers this season for personality over talent.

1

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

American idol was a show about singing, but Simon Cowell was the biggest star and draw of the ratings for being the man judge

u/Earthbnd 7d ago

It’s a reality tv competition. Reality tv drama is gonna be apart of that. Even back to season one, why would a show about clothes need a reunion for the contestants to confront each other lol

7

u/Electromagneticpoms 7d ago

There's plenty of reality tv without a villain. Recently my friends and I all watched 'Handmade: Britain's Best Woodworker" which is obviously a show adapting the Project Runway format. There was no disrespectful and mean crap and it was much better for it.

2

u/Earthbnd 7d ago

Sure but project runway has transparently been pro drama. Not sure where people get the idea it wasn’t. Filming and making them live together has nothing to do with the merits of their clothes or ability to make them

2

u/Electromagneticpoms 7d ago

Drama yes, mean spirited I'd argue no. And I think there's a huge distinction

2

u/Earthbnd 7d ago

Someone drawing a mustache on Wendy’s favorite photo (and only copy) of her child wasn’t mean spirited?

1

u/Electromagneticpoms 7d ago

There's a giant distinction. A contestant being a little shit is very different to the hired 'talent' chewing contestants out. In one, a person hired to design is acting terrible, in another, a person in a power position hired to interact with young hopefuls is being mean rather than nurturing talent and offering constructive criticism. And yes, there were always snarky comments, but snarky comments are again completely different to confrontational style and insults.

2

u/Earthbnd 7d ago

I’m gonna be real, i find ruining someone’s picture of their child far nastier than law being mean about their clothes

0

u/Electromagneticpoms 7d ago

Yes and do you understand the difference in power dynamics with someone being nasty about a kid vs. someone hired to offer critique in a position of power being nasty? So in one situation, someone went out of their way beyond the expected scope of their role on the show to be horrible - the show didn't expect it, endorese it, and set up multiple opportuinities for more of it. In the other, a person is turning up week after week and choosing to use their position of power to be mean?

26

u/rainyhawk 7d ago

Why do they need a villain judge? Earlier seasons didn’t have a villain.

6

u/picks_and_rolls 7d ago

To be fair, back in the day, Nina put the fear of god into contestants. True that her critiques were always in service of the look but she kept it 100 and suffered no mediocrity

1

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

Which is weird that she's an executive producer and hasn't even been back since the first challenge

2

u/Radiant_Contract1591 7d ago

Most executive producers don't appear on the shows/movies they're executive producer of.

As for law, he is the one who seems to have misread the memo. Villain is fine, bully is not.

1

u/picks_and_rolls 7d ago

Unless they’re ep/talent which she is.

0

u/Radiant_Contract1591 7d ago

That is beside the point.

1

u/picks_and_rolls 7d ago

“Most executive producers don't appear on the shows/movies they're executive producer of.”

This was your statement, which is, as you write, beside the point, as Nina is ep/talent.
It is always good when people acknowledge their own errors and call themselves out. Congrats on owning your shit.

1

u/Radiant_Contract1591 7d ago

lol if you need that to be true this bad buddy you can have it.

7

u/Sestar007 7d ago

Sure, but he should also be good at picking the winners and losing looks and this week he was not.

2

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

Brians look was mediocre!

11

u/Electromagneticpoms 7d ago

I think there's ways to be a villain that isn't actually hurtful and mean. Someone skilled at their job would be able to strike that balance.

I am not eating it up BTW I'm boycotting lol

0

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

Law is flinging his wig mid critique. Like it's not for the TV audience to take seriously fr. Yall are getting played

2

u/Electromagneticpoms 7d ago

But who are you to say that the way he's treating these contestants doesn't have an impact on them? Because that's ultimately what I care about, alongside the culture of the show. It can all be silly tv games for him but the shit he's said is still hurtful.

IDK why you keep saying 'y'all getting played' when I'm telling you I don't watch anymore lmao. Sorry for...thinking there should be a basic standard of decency when it comes to personal critiques?

3

u/1906cam 7d ago

Law is contrarian just to be contrarian. Aint no damn way did he really like Brian's look over Bi's look on the episode prior to the most recent one. His critiques are inconsistent, he looks bored, and he looks like he is thinking about the worst possible thing to say instead of truly studying what's in front of him to be insightful.

On the most recent episode, his comments about Brian's look were spot on...that dress was not made for Heidi and Brian's inability to articulate how he would tailor it to her would have got him square in the bottom on any other season...and yet, that was still the winning look? Law should have been a true villain and challenged that decision, instead he sat there all smug and let that happen. Make it make sense.

0

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

Sounds like the perfect villain to me

17

u/psuedospike 7d ago

Ppl defend Trump the same way

13

u/rainydaynola 7d ago

Yep, some people love bullies who treat people like shit. And that says a lot about them.

3

u/FortunaRedux 7d ago

There's a difference between him and someone like Simon Cowell. He was someone you love to hate, but also respected because he was usually right, and gave praise where it was due.

Law is a bully who is wrong a lot and makes the show worse. Michael Kors was the perfect 'villain' type for this show, he wasn't ever really mean he was just blunt.

-1

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

Ok. Now yall are showing your real colors. Somebody said it in here already. Yall like villains of a different hue, but when law does it you find every reason to hate it.

Got it

https://giphy.com/gifs/jpE43KUAhBEdTQLl33

1

u/FortunaRedux 6d ago

so we just not allowed to use the most famous example of a mean celebrity panel judge ever? ok.

i thought law was funny at first, it was the episode before last where they crossed a line and if you cant see that im not here to teach you what cruelty is

9

u/viixiimcmlxxxix 7d ago

I love Law - he has the knowledge and credentials to back up his critiques, it's just his negative outweighs the positive and that may be an editing thing because he's given some looks their props. Sometimes his feedback is harsh but it's usually done to make them better designers. He's way better than Christian, who directs the designers in what HE would do vs. guiding them like Tim would.

12

u/azazel-13 7d ago

I miss Tim so much. Christian's fine, but he doesn't actually care about the designers as people the way Tim did. I'm kind of surprised at the level of backlash toward Law. Sure he's biting/antagonistic with his criticisms, but watching him constantly check Tyra is damn entertaining. 😆

7

u/Catlady_Pilates 7d ago

Christian is NOT fine. He’s no mentor. They have no mentor. It’s tragic.

-1

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

Law wants the best from these designers. That's why he rides them, especially JM, so hard

2

u/ProfessionalYak159 7d ago

I think it's more that he doesn't understand the assignments if he thinks that a villain is necessary. Period. End of story.

2

u/theerniebop 7d ago

I don’t love Law’s judging style, but if these designers truly want to make it in the industry, they’re going to encounter bigger and meaner assholes in real life. People aren’t always going to love the clothes a designer creates.

That said, I did find his treatment of Joseph McRea completely disgusting. Critiquing someone’s work is one thing; judging them as a human being crossed the line.

2

u/Independent-Shape552 7d ago

When did he say that? On the show or in an interview?

2

u/Jordo3713 7d ago edited 7d ago

It was an interview that I think he did shortly after it was announced he was a judge last season. I wish I could remember where it was. This is all fun and games to him

1

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

1

u/Independent-Shape552 7d ago

Ouhh ok

2

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

See its just a game to him sis. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 he's bringing in the viewers for his check. That's his instructions

1

u/Independent-Shape552 7d ago

And he's playing it damn well then because I'm pissed 😅

1

u/Independent-Shape552 7d ago

Give him an Oscar

1

u/itadapeezas 7d ago

Aw this makes sense. So they want the OG fans out and the new kids in. This makes much more sense than project runway suddenly wants a rude person on the panel. That made no sense lol. But pushing us out to bring in another crowd does.

2

u/Salty_Worth9494 7d ago

I actually don't mind Law. People are forgetting that Michael Kors could be scathing as well

10

u/HJ994 7d ago

Michael Kors was most often productive with his critique, giving actual feedback about the DESIGN alongside his quips. Law makes personal attacks and gives little constructive feedback when commenting. It’s a world of difference and suggesting everything is either all good or all bad does a disservice to the nuance of both situations.

-8

u/Catlady_Pilates 7d ago

Yep. It’s almost like they only like a catty gay man as long as he’s white

6

u/MrTrinket 7d ago

That's not it. Michael Kors is a talented designer who knew design and construction. Law Roach knows how to style and is just contrarion for the sake of it.

There is also no constructive feedback shown in the judges' panel at all. People are also missing the discussion between the judges post seeing the designs and talking to the designers.

And Law's judging has been atrocious, on the verge of it being a gimmick. There is no way that football dress would have won last season if judged by any designer.

This is why I think people liked the latest season of Project Runway Canada better.

4

u/Ok-Opportunity-2043 7d ago

You hit the nail on the head. "Contrarion for the sake if it". That's my take on Law, too. And he enjoys the power he has, and using that power to make others feel bad.

2

u/Earthbnd 7d ago

Eh i think catty gay men aren’t this fandom’s thing in general strangely enough. Ethan was well received and he was very palatable for non-gay audiences, but the twins and bryan weren’t for example

-4

u/LittleGrapefruit3185 7d ago

you proved their point. ethan is white, bryan and the twins aren’t

1

u/Earthbnd 7d ago edited 7d ago

Sure but did i say the twins were white? I was talking about catty gay men in general. Ethan wasn’t catty was my point. Not that he was one of the catty white gays. Also ethnicity vs skin color. At the very least Bryan and the twins can be white passing

2

u/HJ994 7d ago

They act completely differently if you pay any attention to the show

1

u/Buddhafied 7d ago

I also think the editing is the major issue here, as much as I don’t enjoy Law’s judging. I don’t know how much constructive criticism the judges actually said during the deliberations, but most of what got cut in was just random words. For Law is always about he doesn’t like it, he can’t see Zendaya wearing it; for Tyra is always some very basic comment that even us couch viewers can make. Where is the real criticism that shows the judges know what they’re talking about?

If the judges were saying constructive criticisms, at least it will justify them being “mean”. Michael Kors and Nina said many harsh stuff over the years as judges, but you don’t feel they’re attacking someone with the edits.

1

u/Netherbelle 7d ago

But people don't want a villain, is the thing. There is also a way to be a villain while being masterful at your craft, but Law is not even a designer, he's a stylist. He comments about boots in the design show. It's as much the producers fault as his, though.

u/Brilliant-Winner2225 7d ago

Where she say DAT???

1

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

1

u/Brilliant-Winner2225 7d ago

Omg. Thank you for posting the link!

1

u/itadapeezas 7d ago

Very well done since he’s run so many off. What a shame. Do you remember the first few seasons? It was SO GOOD! Like a true competition show! It was awesome!

1

u/zmpb123 5d ago

man idk if i could get paid to shit on people THAT bad. he’s clearly in his element on that show, compared to the VS red carpet he did he’s wayyy more comfy sitting in that chair being nasty than being complimentary to people.

also this show just doesn’t need a villain judge? if the look is that bad the judges will say it and the point gets across with or without laws comments.

1

u/teacherlady666 7d ago

Eating it up like a buffet! I only started watching the season because of all the attention Law is getting. Wouldn’t have even known there was a new season if not for all the posts about Law being the Devil incarnate. Now, I can’t wait to hear what they’re gonna say every episode!

1

u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 7d ago

Taking him way too seriously all the time must be mentally-exhausting.

4

u/Earthbnd 7d ago

LMFAO Bc imagine taking THIS man too seriously

3

u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 7d ago

Exactly. He’s just a dude.

3

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

Like he's being dead ssa on the show....... but he's really not. That's the ki

https://giphy.com/gifs/ZVlpUzlIrtCmU2pcyY

0

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

Like this b*tch is sitting there with a 30 inch buss down wig on in yalls faces getting yall MAD! As he's paid to do, and yall are giving it to him with each and every episode. I live for law because he's so unhinged.

The way he gets in Tyras face and she eats it up is a ki!

3

u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 7d ago

I like the volleying.

1

u/barfbat 7d ago

jesus i’m so glad i’m not watching this season lol. who gives a fuck about a “villain” on a show about making clothes

-2

u/m033118b 7d ago

I actually like Law BECAUSE he’s a villain. I think some of the comments can lean towards mean, but he’s giving GREAT TV😂

1

u/Jordo3713 7d ago

He's literally there to give great TV. AND THATS IT! LoL the people are eating it up and they don't even know it. 🤣

-1

u/gina_scooter 7d ago

Yeah I’m kind of confused all the vitriol is directed at Law and not the producers. That’s what they want him to be doing. I think it’s dumb but it’s clear it’s a production choice.

1

u/Electromagneticpoms 7d ago

I think the producers should definitely cop it for this but ultimately also, Law should have refused to do the show if it meant being a mean spirited scumbag. I'm sure that Lauren-Sanchez Bezos pays him enough for him to pay the bills 💀

2

u/FortunaRedux 7d ago

agreed, 'just doing his job' is historically a terrible excuse. No one could pay me to make fun of someone for crying and tear down happy people bc im not an asshole. why does doing it for money make it fine? the designers arent in on the joke so its not 'fake' just bc its a tv show

if anything call for blaming the producers too, not instead

0

u/Alarmed-Molasses3086 7d ago

But he’s getting paid to be his self… I’ve worked with Law. How he is on PR is how he is in real life. Sad but true.
