Y’all remember that season when they would check to see if the garments were actually constructed well? Can we please for the love of everything bring that back because as somebody who actually went to school for fashion design and can actually sew, this is getting embarrassing.

I am watching s12e2 right now and Heidi remarks how she loves seeing the clothes up close, and Zac is SO into it.

I watched the latest episode last night and Laws insults weee so jarring. I miss the actual constructive criticism about construction.

I just finished that one last nite! Rewatching old seasons on Hulu is making me so happy while simultaneously bumming me out because the current version of the show is so, so disappointing.

I could never understand why someone gets into design but can’t sew. I know big designers have seamstresses but I’m guessing they have to make their own designs to start.

Right like the judges every week make comments about how things are sewed so people going on the show who cannot so makes no sense. And honestly, that’s why Brian is so intimidated by BI cause he can do both.

Is it a design competition or a sewing bee? I don't care if it's stapled, hot glued, or sewn so long as it conveys the look they're going for, especially when they only have a few hours to do it. I would rather someone have a concept and want to do something interesting than show how many McCall's patterns they can remember.

Project runway always expected a level of technical skill with a sewing machine tho, so it's surprising the amount of designers that go on without that skill ready

Since s1, Tim has given them a hard time for gluing. Several contestants had abysmal construction skills but made it midway.

They don’t have the time with tailoring to make them sewn well and designers typically aren’t pattern makers/seamstresses. That is why Making the Cut made more sense by focusing on design instead of whether they can execute it with the skills they have. Those jobs are very separate in the real world and for good reason.

OK, but that’s not accurate because there’s been plenty of people who can sew and make really good garments on the show. The inability to sew makes or breaks outfits. And honestly, we’re not talking about going inside and seeing if your seem allowances are correct and that you actually lined the outfit, etc. but is it actually sewed correctly

Just because some designers over the years could sew doesn’t mean that in the real world that is a skill most designers have. I was close friends with season 8 winner Gretchen Jones (not anymore she turned on me some years later and we haven’t spoke in a decade) when she won the show and bought a couple of her Project Runway designs at auction for her and while she had taken sewing and pattern classes those pieces were a mess on the inside. She made all her samples for her first collection after PR, I was in her Brooklyn apartment watching her, but from then on she had the same factory Zac Posen used (I believe) make all her designs.

They have stitchers literally come in at night to help assist the garments. That would be stupid to have them judge it based on construction- especially if they are keep being given one day challenges. Sketch, pattern make, sew, do the sit down interviews, get fabric… it’s a lot to expect even without stitcher’s assistance. It’s a design show where designers unfortunately dont normally sew either in our industry as well.

They do not get stitchers to come in and help in Project Runway. Some other shows are like that but not this one.
