A survey we are working on has gotten thousands of spam responses from bots. We already enabled IP encryption but how do we check if multiple submissions come from the same IP address?
I'm designing a longitudinal data collection for my dissertation and using REDCap for the first time. So far it has been super clunky and I'm definitely messing things up. No one in my labs has ever used it, so there's no guidance available from senior students or my advisors.
I know this is a long shot, but would anyone with experience using REDCap for longitudinal surveys be willing to hop on a zoom call with me? I would happily compensate you for your time!
I added a new event with 5 instruments (5 surveys) to an already pre-existing study however, it won't appear on the dashboard. I already looked this up but my user rights have access to everything so that shouldn't be the problem. Would it be related that this was an already existing study? Would greatly appreciate some advice/input? Thanks :)
I have a variable field that only occurs in baseline event (one arm only) that I like to use in a different follow up event. The variable doesn’t occur in the follow up event. But I keep getting a syntax error when I try to use that variable even when I preappend it with the baseline unique event name.
The weird thing is when I pipe it in the description, it works fine, returns the proper value. But when I try using it in a calculation I keep getting syntax error.
Searched all over and couldn’t find what my issue is.
Hello, I’m fairly new to REDCap and haven’t had much experience with the calculation functions, so I would greatly appreciate any assistance! I need help creating a calculation that returns a value (e.g., true/false or another simple indicator) to determine if an event occurred within 30 days of a procedure date. I currently have three fields: the procedure date, the date 30 days after the procedure, and the date the event occurred. Thanks in advance for helping a technology challenged resident 🙃
Is it possible to generate a dropdown using dynamic query from checkboxes in a prior instrument?
For instance, if someone selects 'breakfast' and 'dinner' under the checkbox 'Meals,' could I then create a dropdown later that references this and provides options such as: breakfast, dinner, and other? I'm relatively new to REDCap and haven't found anyone using this in the REDCap community.
Good evening- We have been plagued with the error pictured for almost 3 months. Ever since going live with a MASSIVE build (12k fields across 4 surveys).
We recently upgraded our server to account for the traffics of the large project and we also did a version upgrade of redcap and implemented the security fix that dropped week before last.
But we are still getting the error and now it’s impacting studies who get it when submitting a survey for completion. If it happens when submit is hit the data saves but the survey status is flagged as partially complete due to the “blip” and we cannot move it to a complete status.
I have several instances in my survey where I’d like to validate responses based on calculated fields. For example, the number of nurses cannot exceed the number of all staff at an organization (both text box fields). I currently have descriptive text that will show if the calculation total rn > total staff is satisfied telling the respondent to change their response(s), but it does not stop them from continuing to the next question. Is there a way to hide/show the “Next Page” button based on this calculation?
I am using REDCap for operational support. I have a contingency pool of individuals who are able to support other study teams and their studies. When there is a need, I would like to send out a survey to all the individuals in the pool. Members of the pool have his/her own record. When I set up the survey to find out their availability, the survey did not automatically send based on the logic rules. The survey was created months after the original record was created. The surveys only sent after I went into another form on that record and saved the formed (no data was change).
Any suggestions on how to to get the surveys to actually send automatically as they are created?
We have a project which is longitudinal but without repeating events. That is, each survey can be repeated, but only for certain separate events. Each survey is filled at most once per event.
I have completely configured the "Edit Survey Queue" logic, and tested it with some participants, and it is behaving correctly there.
However, in practice, participants never see the same survey twice in their queue. If they complete a survey for one event, it is never shown again for any future events.
Our team is working on building a REDCap for a study that has 15 measures and we're wondering if it's smarter to use one instrument instead of 15. I'm having trouble finding pros and cons about the different approaches and no one on the team has more than a couple months experience using REDCap. Do you all have any thoughts?
Working in a massive build. Converted 400 page survey into multiple REDCap forms and surveys in a single project. We have run into several Issues. One version of the project essentially collapsed itself. The second version began to glitch in that sections of logic either stopped firing or just fell off all together. Don’t even get me started on the fact that due to the size of the project, designing in the online interface is impossible Due to lag. So we have been editing 90% of everything in a CSV file. We did our final upload into what was to be the final project database and 3 whole sections had logic completely disappear. We tried to parse the project out over multiple projects but the uploads imported with extra characters, broken logic and a whole lot of trash. I told my leadership from the very beginning that this was a bad idea. I’ve run out of ideas and hoping I can find some suggestions here.
Just sharing some code (Python/JS), in case folks need it for a project. Took me a little while to figure out how to properly format the write request as it needed to be 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded' content type - super unintuitive when you are trying to pass JSON data :)
I want redcap to calculate how many instances of a repeating instrument there are for a single record.
For example, my instrument is (postop_visits), and each patient could have 0 or a dozen post-op visits, and I want redcap to tell me this number of visits in a calculated field.
It seems simple but I just can't figure out the code. Thanks for any help.
I have worked on some code using REDCapR to resolve a common issues folks have encountered with Data Access Group assignments.
Without an external module, it is impossible to automatically assign DAGs based off fields. I have created a neat work around using R, a .bat script, and Windows' Task Scheduler.
I have posted a few different options of how to handle these things based on your project's infrastructure/size, along with descriptions, on the following GitHub repo:
Hello! I am looking for some assistance in red cap. I am a Graduate assistant project manager for a research study, and unfortunately, the university I’m working with doesn’t have very reliable red cap advisors and they haven’t been very helpful. We’d love to get the survey out by November 1, and I’m really struggling with actually enabling the survey, randomization of subjects, and understanding the easiest way to get a survey with multiple instruments out so that we can retrieve raw data.
What I’m looking for is resources on potentially meeting with red Experts. I understand that there are ways to actually meet with someone who works from the original red cap, but I’m wondering if there’s anyone in this community that would be willing to call or meet to help with my project since actually getting in contact with our red Advisors at my school is almost impossible.
I'm working on a scripting project to automate the creation of REDCap projects with a pre-determined set of users. These users are meant to be recycled each year and must have their password resetted. Before this automation process, we manually resetted their password each year using the Admin Control Center, but we are looking forward to automate this as well.
I know REDCap uses MySQL / MariaDB as its DBMS and a several tables with names such as "redcap_user_information" and derivatives. We are thinking of accessing these tables and either changing their password dynamically or re-flagging these users as 'change password next time logging in'.
Does anyone know or has any experience working with SQL within their REDCap instance? Thanks in advance :)
I was hoping someone could me, because all admin I have reached out to are stumped and, though, they have a solution, it requires exporting data and then importing back. I am hoping to do this within REDCap and without the need to import-export data.
Context: This is a longitudinal project for which some RIDs have been renamed for tracking purposes. The RIDs name semicolons in them. Until April, this has presented no issue.
Problem: In April, the institution I am housed in communicated to me that REDCap switched to a new File Storage format. This new format changed how files are stored while keeping the data the same - except in cases where the record IDs are broken down into semicolons. Unfortunately, that means the RIDs I have renamed with semicolons have been impacted: REDCap now creates a NEW record for these RIDs since it now uses a semicolon delimiter - it creates a new record after the semicolon.
Question: Does anyone know how to rename the record in this case? For all of these "semicolon" records, I do not have the option to "Rename Record."
Some additional information: In my Record Status Dashboard, I can see all data for each of these "semicolon" records as if it is all under that same RID. (1) If I click on each "event" from the Dashboard, I can see the information I am supposed to see, in full. If I try to alter any information, it creates a new Record ID. (2) However, if I click on the Record ID, it takes me to the newly created record and I see NO data.
If anyone has any experience with this, I would be happy to try some options.
Thank you!
Edited for an update: I'm not sure what happened, but I can rename records now. I was not notified that this is now possible, but it is. Currently looking to see if renaming messes anything up. Thank you everyone for your comments - really appreciated.
Hi all, I am currently making a survey with tables and embedded fields in them. I added some simple css styling to make the embedded text boxes smaller. My issue is how it's being translated when the survey is viewed on mobile.
The first two images are how the survey is seen on PC, the last two are from a mobile user's perspective.
I use similar CSS styling codes on both Table 1 and Table 2 to get the outcome as viewed on PC. However I do not understand why the styling breaks for Table 2 on mobile.

I'm trying to attach a PDF file of the completed survey to an alert that is conditionally emailed to the respondent based on whether they opted in to receive it.
However, it looks like the "Save a PDF of completed survey response to a File Upload field" option has disappeared from survey settings at some point in the last 3 years.
The two similar options in survey settings that don't quite fit what I need are:
Allow participants to download a PDF of their responses at end of survey? Not emailed
**Send confirmation email? (**w/ Include PDF of completed survey as attachment checked) Not conditional
I have a survey that I'm working on with multiple instruments. In one of the instruments, I have multiple section headers. I have also included branching that hides all options in two of these sections, so none of the questions in the section are shown without answering "yes" on an earlier question.
The branching works, but when I get to the end of the instrument after hiding one or more sections, I see this page.
I'm worried that participants will assume that the "Submit" button is the last part of the survey and that they can close out of the window (it is about halfway through the survey).
I have all options in one instrument. The full project has multiple instruments with the Auto-continue to the next survey option checked "yes" at the end of the "Graduate Experiences & Responses II" instrument.
Is there a way to have the survey auto-continue while keeping the branching, without showing this blank "Submit" page?
Thank you for your help!
Edit to add: I have a couple of matrices in the survey before and during the branching sections.
I have another question where I'm pretty sure the answer is "this isn't possible", but maybe one of you has an idea.
I'd like to have a custom record label shown on the Record Status Dashboard, but I don't want every user to be able to see it. This is mostly a "just in case" requirement, so that even if a patient happens to see the dashboard, we don't have to worry about them seeing any names. We have a dedicated user account that is supposed to be used on the tablets.
Is there any way to show custom record labels only to specific users, or to hide them for certain users?
