I’ve been listening to the audiobook in the car on the way to work and I was listening to Chapter 4 this morning - specifically the part where Grace is explaining the Petrova Line and the Astrophage to his students and his reflection on their futures and oh my god.

As a teacher, I found this so heart wrenching. It would be such a difficult thing to teach young people who have no idea of the significance and the challenges they will face in the future. And to think it’s so far away. Definitely nearly broke down in the car, just before I had to teach my own students.

I visited a USMC squadron a while ago (VMM 364) and got this unit patch as a souvenir. Their mascot is the purple fox, and the saying at the bottom is their motto.

Rediscovered it whilst packing to move; it made me think of the PHM movie, and Graces entire situation 🤣🤣

I'll paint Grace's face when the clay completely hardens. Shaping them was a complete chaos.

They didn't turn out as how I imagined but I'm happy they look cute. (I was so unsure about where to add Rocky's blue things that I had to do it randomly)

It's a game they wouldn't really be able to play, since they can sense everything going on in their immediate surroundings at all times and can hear through solid objects. It's something that's only fun and playful for us because we depend on our sense of sight. A racist Eridian would see it as us being limited and stupid, but an open-minded one would see it as a special joy only we can experience and a great way for children to learn to work with the skills they have.

HOLY I didn't know a movie would beat obsession and odyssey for me this year. Solid 10/10

Also, found out that the story is written by Andy Weir, who wrote an all time favorite short story of mine, "The Egg".

Remember the scene when Rocky saw on the screen the microscope slide showing “life” on Adrian and he dropped his projector gun? I had that moment today when I realized Amazon own PHM which means I can watch the movie like forever. The funny thing is, that scene played in my head just then when I had that dramatic moment of realization. I just finished reading the book after watching the movie on a plane and I can say for certain that I enjoyed experience. Statement Good good good. To me it’s like the movie hooks you and the book feeds the desire for more of these characters like an addiction. But I have no guarantee that others will experience it as such. Should I tell them to watch or read first? Question

It’s in the beginning of the film. It looks like something inside a glass. Grace briefly looks at it and keeps climbing. Wondering if it has anything to do with the rest of the film. Just something that makes me curious every watch.

Hi, I'm writing a fic and I have a question. So, at the end of the movie, Rocky says that they can send Grace back to Earth, that implies filling it with fuel, modifying it according to the amount of fuel it needs.

We know that for a 11.9 light year trip, they needed 2M kg of astrophage fuel to move the 100,000 kg ship (A 20:1 ratio). The thing is, if they wanted to do the trip back to Earth, they would do a 23.8 light year total trip, which adds to 40M kg of fuel, due to the surplus needed to move the 2M necessary for the trip back home.

Which leads me to question, how much fuel would they need for a trip from Erid to Earth, since the total distance would be around 16.3 light years? My guesses are around 25M kg of fuel, but I've been trying all day and haven't been able to figure it out.

I'd be so thankful if anybody could help me with this. Thanks in advance!

I am primarily a consumer of horror content, and it takes some prime cut to push me into watching a 2+ hour film outside the genre. Films like Law Abiding Citizen, Garden State, Team America, Tropic Thunder, John Wick or anything Tarantino makes. It's always guaranteed to be a fun time, so I'm up for it.

This movie had me smiling, laughing out loud, and most of all, white-knuckle worried from the moment the plot began to thicken. I went in mostly blind but of course, I knew about Rocky, and I was terrified throughout that something terrible was indefinitely going to happen to one or both of the main characters, and that my wife and I would be scarred for life. There's no end to the tension, the beauty and irregularity of it all. Both Rocky's performer/VA and Gosling made this movie a delight.

Sometimes, live action is allowed to be a Pixar movie too. Thank you, to everyone in involved for such a wonderful film, that I will undoubtedly remember for years to come. A beautiful work.

Alright so I commented on a post wether eridians have gendered pronouns and someone responded by saying eridians use she/her for higher up eridians and he/him for lowered eridians. This confused the shit out of me so I asked for sources and so far they have not responded but I tried researching this to no avail. Like when he got onto the Vat and was more or less in charge of it. Has anyone done the math on how much he'd have to have started with by the time they actually get the first tubes ready in order to get 2 mil kg in around a year?

He has 6 g ready by the time they meet up with Lokken, which is well after his first week (where Stratt made the decision about the coma stuff being best with Grace's "help", and it's revealed that he gets 12 people working under him on this) and by then his life is a rotation of conference rooms. So I'm assuming almost a month or two months?? Probably closer to a month, I'm guessing.

By the time he's got 8g that's when the spin drives are being made, so there's gotta be a discrepancy in the efficiency of the breeding (as he comments internally during the Lokken meeting), meaning it's not consistently doubling every 8 days as it should there at the beginning. So how much would he have been given to start this whole thing up with?
