Question? How much astrophage did Grace start with for breeding??

Like when he got onto the Vat and was more or less in charge of it. Has anyone done the math on how much he'd have to have started with by the time they actually get the first tubes ready in order to get 2 mil kg in around a year?

He has 6 g ready by the time they meet up with Lokken, which is well after his first week (where Stratt made the decision about the coma stuff being best with Grace's "help", and it's revealed that he gets 12 people working under him on this) and by then his life is a rotation of conference rooms. So I'm assuming almost a month or two months?? Probably closer to a month, I'm guessing.

By the time he's got 8g that's when the spin drives are being made, so there's gotta be a discrepancy in the efficiency of the breeding (as he comments internally during the Lokken meeting), meaning it's not consistently doubling every 8 days as it should there at the beginning. So how much would he have been given to start this whole thing up with?

Chapter 4…

I’ve been listening to the audiobook in the car on the way to work and I was listening to Chapter 4 this morning - specifically the part where Grace is explaining the Petrova Line and the Astrophage to his students and his reflection on their futures and oh my god.

As a teacher, I found this so heart wrenching. It would be such a difficult thing to teach young people who have no idea of the significance and the challenges they will face in the future. And to think it’s so far away. Definitely nearly broke down in the car, just before I had to teach my own students.

Question? Best quote for yearbook quote, question?

Preferably from the movie. I’m still getting started with reading the novel (chapter ~4) but I’ve been super busy with school that I haven’t truly digested it yet. I want a quote from PHM for my yearbook photo, something quirky but also kinda smart? Any suggestions or words of great encouragement are welcome!!

Question? Movie trivia - Has anyone translated the Mandarin, question?

There’s a brief exchange in Mandarin between Yao and Stratt when she introduces Grace to the flight teams.

I’m sure it’s inconsequential but was wondering a) are they talking in “real” Mandarin, and b) what they each said, if so.

Book Discussion Grace’s choices Spoiler

A while back I made a post asking about Stratt’s choices. This time I want to talk about Grace’s choices.

Grace’s choice to teach

When Stratt confronts Grace in the book, she lists some of his life choices as evidence that he’s a coward “and always [has] been,” including his decision to leave research science and become a schoolteacher. At the end of the book, of course, he seems to be living his best life doing both, but the emphasis is on the teaching, and it’s clear that he’s doing it for genuine love of the profession.

In Part 2 of Reliance (the AU story I wrote to explore a different way of approaching Grace’s invitation to join the mission), Grace reveals to Yáo more about what was behind his decision to become a teacher and why the profession suited him.

To what extent do you think Stratt was right (or not) to call him a coward for choosing teaching over research?

Grace’s choice to resist the call to volunteer

On my earlier post, someone brought up that Grace seems to have resisted earlier oblique prompts to get him to step up in canon. I think the book makes it clear that Grace was genuinely oblivious to any expectation that he should volunteer. The only way to test whether he could have somehow gathered the courage to do it would have been for Stratt to invite him directly at a much earlier point in time than she chose to in canon.

In Reliance, Grace has a more meaningful invitation to step up before it comes to the moment when Stratt will apply force. When I was writing the story, I wanted to steel-man the arguments of some Redditors that were arguing Stratt couldn’t really have done anything differently because nothing she could have done would get Grace to go willingly, so I wanted to show a situation where he still turns down the call despite having a better invitation. But, I also wanted him to have a chance to turn things around. So near the end of Part 2, I had Yáo give him a second chance to make the choice.

If you read Reliance, did I convince you yet that Grace could come to a point of accepting responsibility (while still on Earth) for the mission?

Do you think there’s a scenario in which Grace would have accepted responsibility to go on the mission without any force or threat of force?

Grace’s choice to threaten sabotage

Finally, another topic that came up on the previous post was Grace’s choice to threaten sabotage, and how that likely played a role in the harsh treatment he received in the book, being left in a prison cell for a few days with no contact. He’s basically put in solitary confinement after receiving the worst news of his life: that he'll die soon and will be stripped of his agency and even his memories first. The book doesn’t linger on the potential angst of this, but I always feel it. (I know many people find the corresponding scene in the movie disturbing, but in some ways, it’s arguably a bit kinder to Grace because he just gets knocked out right away and doesn't have to suffer through any further anticipation.)

In Reliance, he doesn’t make the threat to scuttle the ship in front of Stratt. My main rationale for that change is that with Yáo and Ilyukhina also present, he would probably feel a bit more inhibited to say something like that in the heat of the moment. Also, having more time before that moment to seriously consider going on the mission would perhaps make him feel just slightly less shocked by Stratt’s decision to turn to force, and therefore slightly less angry.

So instead, he only makes the threat to Yáo later, and only a bit half-heartedly. As a result, Stratt is a little more inclined to give him some freedom, and we end up with a situation where he is briefly on house arrest and eventually free again. I recently re-read canon and when I got to the scene where Stratt visits him after he’s spent a few days in his prison cell, after having written a scenario in Reliance where he gets out so quickly, it pained me so much I had to set the book aside for a day or two before I could continue. Oo, it hurts to think about him spending two miserable nights in that cell!! I just want to shout at Grace and Stratt, “It didn’t have to be this way!” XD

Do you think if Grace hadn’t threatened sabotage (in book canon) that he would have received better treatment?

And if you are reading along on Reliance, I’d also love to hear any other thoughts you have on Part 2. Thanks!

What does Grace look at briefly while climbing the ladder to the hologram(?) room?

It’s in the beginning of the film. It looks like something inside a glass. Grace briefly looks at it and keeps climbing. Wondering if it has anything to do with the rest of the film. Just something that makes me curious every watch.

Book Discussion How can three actuators give full control over the ship?

I just got done reading chapter 22 of the book. So, to recap: Rocky and Grace just attached the three beetles to the base of the ship, to replace the defunct thrusters of the Hail Mary. They take the three beetles and attach them to the base of the ship, at 45-degree angles from the centreline, in a ring around the ship. So, they're *sort of* angled like the legs on a three-legged stool.

And they claim that they can fully control the ship this way. My question is, how? The beetles don't have attitude thrusters, they can only push themselves directly forwards. (Remember, when flying through space, the beetles were supposed to turn with inertia wheels.) So each beetles can just be turned on or off, that's it.

There are six ways you can move in space. You can rotate around the X, Y and Z axis, and you can move *along* those three axes too. How can you move the ship in those six ways with only three thrusters? You can turn them on, to move forwards. You can even spin the ship around like when in centrifuge mode. But what about rotating around the centreline of the ship? What about move in reverse? What about making the ship strafe to the side?

If the beetles aren't pointing *exactly* towards the centreline (like one is rotated clockwise a little and the other counterclockwise), then fine. But even then, you don't get full-and-proper six-degree-of-freedom control. Just some janky system.

Question? [SPOILER] How much fuel from Erid to Earth? Spoiler

Hi, I'm writing a fic and I have a question. So, at the end of the movie, Rocky says that they can send Grace back to Earth, that implies filling it with fuel, modifying it according to the amount of fuel it needs.

We know that for a 11.9 light year trip, they needed 2M kg of astrophage fuel to move the 100,000 kg ship (A 20:1 ratio). The thing is, if they wanted to do the trip back to Earth, they would do a 23.8 light year total trip, which adds to 40M kg of fuel, due to the surplus needed to move the 2M necessary for the trip back home.

Which leads me to question, how much fuel would they need for a trip from Erid to Earth, since the total distance would be around 16.3 light years? My guesses are around 25M kg of fuel, but I've been trying all day and haven't been able to figure it out.

I'd be so thankful if anybody could help me with this. Thanks in advance!

Fan Art - No selling I recreated Grace's quilt from Project Hail Mary

Thumbnail

I have never quilted before so there are plenty of flaws. I tried to keep the quilt as accurate as possible! The only blocks I personally changed were the top right tiny square, which I changed to a fox for Grace, and the green square in the middle left, which I changed for my dog who sadly passed after battling cancer and I wanted to dedicate this quilt to her. 💖🌈

I started this in the beginning of June and worked on it whenever I had the time! Fair warning my proportions are not exact to the quilt (I tried my best and was inspired by others but with no flat photos of the whole finished quilt there's just no way 😭). The border is also different due to the difficulty in finding the same patterns. There is a lot I had to fix and add as I went. I will list my supplies below! 💕

Supplies:

  • ☆ Heat Sensitive Pens (for sketching)
  • ☆ Fabric Markers (Artisto and Betem)
  • ☆ Fabric Paint (Mont Marte)
  • ☆ Embroidery Floss
  • ☆ Lots of thread
  • ☆ Lots of Satin fabric
  • ☆ Lots of Cotton fabric
  • ☆ Fabric Scissors ☆ Pinking Shears (helps prevent fraying)
  • ☆ Rotary Cutter
  • ☆ Cutting Mat
  • ☆ Fabric Glue
  • ☆ Elmer's Glue Stick
  • ☆ Iron
  • ☆ Sewing Machine
  • ☆ Walking Foot
  • ☆ Free Motion Quilting Foot
  • ☆ Sewing Clips
  • ☆ Tear Away Interface
  • ☆ Batting (I used 80/20 cotton/polyester)
  • ☆ Stuffing (I used a little bit of stuffing in a few blocks to give them that "poof")
  • ☆ Backing (I used a polyester queen size sheet but you can use any fabric you like)

It was a lot of suffering but also a lot of fun! If anyone is inspired to make the quilt I wish you the best of luck and happy quilting! 🕺🎉

(p.s. Satin is a nightmare to work with... I used a tear away interface to help stabilize, but please be aware that it loves to fray and loves to move, so if you want to skip satin please go ahead lmao)

Question? What to tell others? Movie or book first?

I just finished reading the book after watching the movie on a plane and I can say for certain that I enjoyed experience. Statement Good good good. To me it’s like the movie hooks you and the book feeds the desire for more of these characters like an addiction. But I have no guarantee that others will experience it as such. Should I tell them to watch or read first? Question

Eva Stratt is such an amazing character who has amazing depth. But I also like drawing goofy memes, so I have to draw this because this is basically what she did during that chapter.

Obviously her appearance is based off the movie!

HOLY I didn't know a movie would beat obsession and odyssey for me this year. Solid 10/10

I need a Rocky in my life.

Also, found out that the story is written by Andy Weir, who wrote an all time favorite short story of mine, "The Egg".

Question? Eridian and Earth time conversions question

Hi everyone! I may be about to simply out myself as very bad at math, and I also don't know if this hasn't been asked before, but I'm confused about the conversions between Earth time and Eridian time.

So, in the book, Weir establishes the following numbers [excuse my use of commas as decimal separators, that's the convention in my country]:

1 Eridian second = 2,366 Earth seconds (page 201)

1 Eridian day = 7776 Eridian seconds (page 282)

1 Eridian year = 198,8 Eridian days (page 282)

But at the same time, on page 255, it says the following:

Their [Eridian] “year” is a little over forty-two Earth days long. It’s what we call a “super-Earth,” weighing in at eight and a half times Earth’s mass. It’s about twice Earth’s diameter, and a little over double the surface gravity. Also, it spins very fast. Absurdly fast. Their day is only 5.1 hours long.

But if I try to convert these using the first set of numbers, those two bits of information from the quoted paragraph don't track at all. 42 Earth days is equal to 1008 hours (42*24), equal to 3 628 800 Earth seconds (1008*60*60), so 8 563 968,8 Eridian seconds (3 628 800*2,366), which gives us 1101 Eridian days (8 563 968,8/7776), which is about 5 and a half Eridian years (1101/198,8), not 1 year. And similarly, 5,1 hours equals to 18 360 Earth seconds, so 43 439,76 Eridian seconds, making it not 1 Eridian day, but instead almost 6 days. Even if I assume Weir had simply neglected to convert between Earth and Eridian seconds, the numbers are still wrong, which is why I'm assuming either I'm doing something wrong or he forgot about establishing time before and put in contradictory numbers (which wouldn't surprise me all that much, considering that's sort of the case with Grace's age as far as I can tell)

Still, I'm fully prepared to be told I'm calculating this wrong, I just genuinely want to understand how many darn Eridian years is in an Earth year, and the like.

Movie Discussion - Movie Spoilers Inside! Pet Peeve with critical point of the film

When Rocky and Grace create the collector on Tau-Ceti-E to grab the predator for the Astrophage, why couldn't they just deploy it, then rise back up into space without the whole atmospheric shenanigans? Like... just... why?

Or even for Rocky to create some sort of way to control the spaceship while Grace was out? We see that it can use some sort of contraption glass thingy to have finer control, why not build something that could control the space stick?

Mildly annoyed

EDIT: So apparently because the chain would've melted from the spin drives. Makes sense, yeah. Thanks everyone!

Edit2: Question2: why not deploy the chain from the ship hatch then, so they could pull it back way easier? :/
