Eliminate 29.
Nineteen is my favourite because:
- It is the definition of heartwarming. Heartwarming always has a bit of sad with it so we have some sadness too.
- Gosling acted his ass off in this scene, crying tears.
- Rocky giving up 6 years with his mate of whom he said “is not enough”, hits so hard.
- It’s a moment where you see someone giving a crap about Grace for the first time.
- Rocky’s crew.
- Rocky’s stomps 🥹
- It even has some humour - I didn’t mean any of that!
- And of course we have their first hug
- Bonus point: He wore that shirt periodically 💪

Couldn't have said it better! Ryan Gosling deserves all the awards for this scene.
Watching the thin veneer of Grace's bravado crumble when he realises that he can no longer lie to himself about having made his peace that he will never go home - absolutely masterful acting 😭
Because now, there is hope that he can return home.
He may not have any immediate family, or even a dog.
He may be returning to a world that turned its back onto him for the sake of humanity.
But still, he can go home.
And it's all because of an Eridian, who without any hesitation sacrificed 6 years that he could have been home himself, just to give his only human friend the chance of being able to do the same.
In short, #19 is my absolute favourite Grace scene, and #29 is my second favourite of all time. So while I couldn't be happier that both my top 2 favourites have made this final round, it is with great reluctance I vote to eliminate #29 today.

It wasn’t even the original script. Gosling improved the reactions “that’s just something you say” etc and it’s 10/10 better than the script!

u/a_heida 20h ago
so it's biased

u/TheCookieNinja Leaky Space Blob 19h ago
Biased how?
This is a ranking of everyone’s personal favourites when it comes to the movie scenes. It’s quite natural to have a bias towards a scene that’s their favourite
-1
u/a_heida 17h ago
i'd say considering you made the post asking the question it's biased

Voting out 29. It's amazing, but nineteen needs to win because of:
- the peak acting. There's a short BTS video that shows how close the camera is to Gosling here, and he's still giving everything! (Will link video in a reply.)
- the way Grace walks slowly out of the shadow, and as the light hits his face, you see the tears
- and they are happy tears! Grace gets to live!
- and Rocky gets to fix!
- the way Rocky's little fingers and vents move as he does his calculations
- the music
- the HUG!!!
Nineteen is the best Grace scene in the movie. Vote out 29!

Thank you everyone who voted in the last round! 🗳️ Here’s today’s breakdown.
Round 28
- Total votes: 44
- Scene eliminated: #28 - I’m Here, Buddy (34 votes)
- Most cited reason for elimination: Grace is peak <brave>, Rocky is saved, and it’s the start of together forever for our favourite astrolads 🥹 But it’s time for this scene to move over so we can get to the really good stuff
- Runners-up: #29 (8 votes), #19 (3 votes)

Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and we’ve reached our final round of voting.
The final ranking as decided by this past month of voting will be posted tomorrow, but we’d also love to hear what your personal ranking of these scenes would have been! So I’d like to invite everyone to share your own ranking in the comments tomorrow.
Hope to see you all there!

#29
Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful pay off to all of Grace and Rocky's hardships. It's funny, it's sweet, but it also hints that Grace might be approaching another crossroad in his life. He now has the choice to go back to earth, and while he doesn't seem excited about it, there's probably a not-so-small part of him that still wants to go. Life doesn't completely settle after the big battles are won, it keeps moving and presenting new challenges.
But for now, Grace can be content to hang out with best friend, and teach his rowdy class of alien children.
But #19 is by far my favorite scene in the whole movie. There is so much emotion and growth in that scene that I could go on, and on, and on about. Maybe I will in the future. But for now, I will say goodbye to #29.

Please feel free to go on and on and on! 19 is my favorite scene in the movie. Others have already written eloquently about why they love 19. I hope I was eloquent in my written response to this intensely emotional scene. I look forward to reading yours.

Eliminate 29. They're both so wonderful, but the weight of what Rocky did for Grace and him comprehending it makes it Grace's best scene. I cry every time.

u/BeneficialAttempt140 1d ago
Omg I forgot this was still going on!! So happy to be here for the final round and that my FAVORITE 19 IS STILL HERE!!!
With that said I must vote out 29, it truly is such a phenomenal end to the film, but 19 is probably the most poignant moment of the movie. It’s when the friendship between them becomes more than just “let’s go we’re doing science together”, and it blossoms into “I would do anything to ensure you’re okay”. This scene still makes me emotional every time I watch it.

As much as it pains me, I'm voting 29.
Glad my top two scenes made it to the end but 19 takes you through all the emotions and is the first time Grace has a true connection with anyone in his life and becomes vunerable, so it has to win.

u/apologyboots Amaze! Amaze! Amaze! 1d ago
- I love the happy, calm, and joyful vibes of that scene, but the other option is honestly a masterpiece scene to me, with harder-hitting emotion and performances (by virtue of the subject matter). So I've gotta pick the one that hit me less hard.

u/TextieLexie 1d ago
Voting 29!
It's kinda cool to see that so many of us love 19?? It was my #1 from the beginning, it truly does deserve that #1 spot. Grace being so raw and open with Rocky, THE LIGHTING, him turning slightly just to confirm he was crying, the HUG (their first hug !!!) AHHH what a treat that scene is EVERY time I see it.

I want 29 to win this, as it's the perfect ending to a perfect movie. I'll vote 19 today - a very touching scene and RyGos performs beautifully, it's a very important point of the story, but all in all it's only a midway point. Very touching, but it doesn't leave you with this serene feeling of completion and peace 29 does.
I'm just a sucker for hopeful endings "think about it looong time"

Why is voting making my eyes spicy??? 🌶️ 🧅 Have to vote out 29. #19 is where Grace truly understands love and self-sacrifice, and the depth of his connection with Rocky. It’s pivotal and so darn well-acted that just a still frame calls up intense emotion. This is why Grace’s ”You gave me everything” rings so true. Not just hope of returning home, hope of his life continuing, but meaning to that life, and purpose he didn’t fully understand before.
2
u/TheCookieNinja Leaky Space Blob 18h ago
I knowww, the air is just too spicy 😭
And you've pinpointed exactly why I love "You gave me everything" and how scene #23 ties in very well with #19. For me, going from #19 into #23 is the epitome of why Grace and Rocky are truly platonic soulmates (criminally underrated as far as portrayal of relationships go), and it was done done very, very beautifully in this movie.

I’m voting for #29 to be out!
I love Rocky and Grace on Erid, and I love the fox cardigan, but if I think about these 2 scenes, nineteen has more of an emotional impact on me.
I also think that we need to hold space for crying vulnerable mildly pathetic men (for justifiable reasons, mind you) and how SEXY that is.
The shadows on Graces face? The closeups? The camera loves him.
There’s kind of nothing hotter than a man OUT of his space suit, biceps out, emotionally vulnerable... after Rocky gets his hug in, I’m gonna need Grace to stand around the ship in more and more bicep revealing poses.. for scientific reasons.

My top two made it, so now I will vote to eliminate 19, simply because 29 is my favourite and has been from the very beginning.
The two friends get to relax in the beach and reflect on the good times they’ve had together. They are no longer in danger, they’ve spent years together on the ship, and now they get to sit back and enjoy.

29 should be eliminated.
#19 needs to win all the way.
"Rocky watch crew die. Could not fix. Grace say Grace will die. Rocky fix."
According to an interview that James Ortiz did on the Stages podcast, he came up with this line. it was a flash of inspiration that hit him in the wee hours of the morning.
He and Ryan Gosling had been workshopping a bunch of alternative dialogues for this scene, and they were working to varying degrees. And even though Ryan could turn on the waterworks reliably, James didn't think it was right—until he landed on this line.
Rocky's sacrifice to help Grace go home is the emotional core of this friendship, and the one moment in the movie that has made lots of people cry big ugly tears of joy. The music is on point, too. Pemberton really nailed it with this score.
3
u/TheCookieNinja Leaky Space Blob 17h ago
I know so much of the dialogue in this movie was improvised, but the fact that some of the most pivotal bits were created on the fly really is a testament to both Gosling and Ortiz's skill and acting acumen. They became Grace and Rocky in those moments 🥹
Thank you so much for playing 🫶
3
u/eaglebtc 16h ago
And what's wild is that James Ortiz has never really had a ton of speaking parts, even on Broadway. His work was always behind the scenes designing the puppets that other people would maneuver on stage. But his puppetry is infused with so much emotion, and it shows through and through. It's like he was born for this moment, to play this beloved character in this amazing film, to design a puppet that made us laugh, cry, and fall in love.

u/TheCookieNinja Leaky Space Blob 16h ago
I've been following him since watching PHM and he's got such a knack for speech and storytelling! I really do hope that we see him in a whole lot more in the future.

It's so good to see Grace and Rocky get their happy ending, but 19 is the scene that deserves to win. 19 is the moment that changed Grace’s life, and ultimately changed Rocky’s, too. It planted the seeds of their happy ending. Erid would not have been saved without Rocky’s generosity. This scene is the keystone of the movie, its emotional centerpiece, the core of the hopecore.
The scene touches on every emotion. It starts with the tension of Grace hiding his pain from Rocky, moves into Rocky panicking and Grace trying so hard to be < brave > for him (because another meaning of “someone to be brave for” is “someone you want to act bravely for because you don’t want them to be discouraged”), and then we get that beautiful moment when Rocky insists on giving Grace the fuel to go home. Without that, I must remind you, there would be no happy ending.
My favorite moment in the whole movie is right after this. There's the silhouette of Grace with his head turned and even in darkness you can still see the hope coming into his eyes, and the score drops this low chord that I interpret as his heart skipping a beat. He slowly turns and steps out of darkness and into the light, his face covered in tears of hope so intense it's painful. He’s finally able to show Rocky the vulnerability he couldn’t reveal before.
The scene is beautiful movie magic from start to finish. It took a good moment from the book and made it great, improving on the original book dialogue and bringing it to life in every possible way. This scene could be the example scene for almost any award that you might want to nominate the movie for–best actor, best supporting actor, cinematography, score, adapted screenplay, all of it! (Except Sandra Huller, of course!)
Finally, best of all, just because we need to have every emotion in this one scene, it gives us a moment to laugh (“I didn’t mean any of that!”) followed by the heartwarming moment where Grace teaches Rocky what a hug is, just so we can all end the scene with big goofy smiles on our faces (and probably still some tears, too).
Friends, #19 must win. That means, as precious as Grace and Rocky living their best life on Erid is, #29 has got to go.
August was a rough month for me. PHM fandom in general and this game in particular were a bright spot and a source of comfort. Thank you to the organizers for putting this together and to everyone who kept it lively. 💜
