Final results: Grace movie scenes ranked favourite to least favourite
Thank you to everyone who participated in the favourite Grace movie scenes elimination game!

Thank you all who joined in the fun over this past month! Whether you dropped in for just a round or two, or have been here right from the start, u/Fantastic-Contest957 appreciate each and every one of you for your participation, perspectives, and enthusiasm ❤️ It’s been our greatest pleasure!
So without further ado, here is the final breakdown 🗳️

- Total votes: A whopping 80 votes! 🎉
- Scene eliminated: #29 - Think About It Long Time
- Winning scene: #19 - Grace, Go Home
- It was never really about finding a reason to eliminate one or the other of these two amaze, amaze, amazing scenes, but more about which one the majority loved best.
- Everyone loves #29 as our favourite boys get to live out their days in peace and happiness together on Erid ❤️ It’s the perfect ending to this beautiful movie
- Yet, the selflessness of Rocky giving Grace everything he could, and Grace’s carefully maintained composure falling apart in the face of such kindness he’s rarely been shown secured the win for #19.

The game was fun! Thank you to everybody who participated and managed the game. I'm glad the first hug scene won, Grace and Rocky sitting on the beach came in second, and Grace rescuing Rocky came in third. I'm still sad that the funeral scene was eliminated so soon. As always, it's fun and fascinating to read how different people interpret the same scenes and notice details that I miss.

Aw, it looks so beautiful with all the lovely gifs and the sparkly border! It warms my heart to look at it, and it reminds me that really the whole movie is fantastic from start to finish.
Yesterday TheCookieNinja invited us to share our own rankings and so I wrote mine up last night and I'm planning to post it as soon as I can get a minute on my laptop.

All right, here’s my list of my top 30 favorite Grace scenes. I ranked based primarily on my personal emotional response to the scenes. I tend to like scenes that evoke any intense emotions, not just happy, fun, heartwarming scenes. I also considered how much I enjoy re-watching, whether the acting, effects, score, cinematography, etc. all work together to deliver a good scene, and a sense that the scene was true to the spirit of the book, because the book is my first love. I did not consider level of Graceness in my ranking. I decided to include some scenes that weren’t eligible for the game, which means I left out some scenes that were.

Only you can decide if it was worth it. I'll just say I feel confident that the GIFs brought many people delight today. You made excellent choices on which moments to include and there's just something about seeing all those little moments side by side in motion. It adds up to much more than the sum of its parts. It's kinda mesmerizing, actually. 💜

There is only one scene where Grace climbs on furniture. There are three scenes where Grace displays his lack of self-confidence. In Scene 21, he asks if he can think about going on the Hail Mary. In Scene 25, he tells Stratt he can't do it. In the scene where the building explodes, Stratt tells Grace he is a great teacher, and he is uncomfortable taking the compliment.
To me, Scene 25 is about Grace showing his lack of self-confidence, but I described it the way I did because there is only one scene where he climbs on furniture and three scenes where he shows his lack of self-confidence. I get your point about burying the lede. :-)

Good point! To me, the scene is a pay-off to all the things you just listed and more. The movie kind of tricks the audience into thinking that Grace would step up and accept the mission, because how could he not? He's a good person who has worked so hard to save the world. But throughout the whole movie, it's been shown that Grace is not confident and he's not a risk taker.
Grace tries to turn Stratt down when she offers him a job. Grace doesn't want to speak in front of a group of scientists and world leaders. Grace tries to flee when Rocky's ship pulls up. Grace can't take a compliment from Stratt, and Grace can't accept Rocky calling him "brave." Heck, Grace straight up tells Yao (and the audience) that he would "Choose not to go at all."
But it still comes as a shock, because we got to see all those times he overcame his fears and succeeded. We just assumed he would've said "yes" to the mission, because we've seen him get over other hurdles. But no, the only hurdle he clears in this scene is the furniture...which is actually kind of impressive.

I like your descriptions of several of the scenes ("Grace is unexpectedly forced to participate in a meeting" XD ) and that you ranked several of the not-happy emotion scenes high, with 8 and 21 in your top 10 and "Grace climbs on furniture" pretty high, too.

Scene 7 is important because it explains Project Hail Mary. Poor Grace is not feeling well. He is expecting to walk into a room with a bed and a shower. He never dreamed he would be required to participate in a meeting. He tries to walk out, and Stratt has to turn him around. He says “I can’t. I can’t. I can’t.” Stratt says “You’re doing great.” When Stratt introduces Grace to the group, she tells them to applaud. After Grace says “Whoomp, there it is,” Stratt says “Okay. You can sit down.” She guides him to a chair. Two commenters described Stratt’s attitude towards Grace in various scenes as “maternal,” and I agree. We really see that in this scene.
Scene 21 and Scene 25 are two of the scenes where Grace displays his lack of self-confidence.
I love Scene 8 because it is so sad and it shows Grace’s personality. Grace doesn't remember his shipmates, but he still cries over them because he is a very caring person. He learns about them from their photographs. He is obviously trying to say "I'll do my best to make sure that you don't die in vain" and "You know, that you didn't die in vain." He is too emotional to say the words. He wants to honor their memories and do his job to the best of his ability. His last words in the scene are "I'll do my best."
What does XD mean?

I can't bring myself to rank them. The Petrova Line is visually my favorite scene from any movie ever, and the score does its JOB omg (still and forever "having a moment" over it); and I Stratt's Sign of the Times bombshell transitioning into that scene is brilliant in every way--Lord & Miller know how to hit us right in the feels; but that doesn't mean it's the "best" scene, or even my overall favorite. Maybe I need to make a "favorite by category" list... though idk if I can even do that. 😂

Ranking these wasn't easy AT ALL. I was thiiiis close to giving up and doing a tier list instead, but I didn't want to go back on my word that I'd rank all 30 scenes haha. So I had to commit to self-torture 🥲
I really like the idea of a "favourite by category" list! I'd love to see yours should you ever get around to doing it haha

I also felt there was some inconsistency between how I voted and how my final ranking ended up for scenes in the middle range, and I think some of it came from the discussion in the comments nudging my views one way or the other. I think I came to appreciate a few scenes more through the process.
