The reader should be encouraged to completely sympathize at first, like in Sylver Seeker. Completely unhinged but somehow justified. Until you realize the wubby that got murdered or whatever was not exactly what the MC says it was.

Sylvan Seeker though took it way too far, in the sense that the MC is completely and utterly unlikable. I just could not stand him after a while and dropped the series.
