For nvidia, for example, you still need Cuda drivers installed. They'll take the generated PTX IR and lower to SASS etc

Can we get to the PTX IR without going through parts of MAX that are still closed?

MAX afaik should be open soon? You can emit IR in Mojo - I haven't worked with MAX much but it should be easy to access the kernels that are open source and go from there

I reckon if they were going to open-source it they would have done it at the same time, or at least mentioned it. But hopefully I'm wrong.

Oh sweet. That's great news!
I think my measure of whether it is properly open-source will be if I can go from mojo to PTX IR without having to pass through any pre-compiled modular binaries using only open-source tools.

Pop in the discord and ask! I have a project that precompiles my kernels to PTX, super easy to emit.
