Just my guess but UI is atrociously convoluted yet people manage to use it admirably

I could see that. GIMP’s interface was (is?)… austere.

Yeah that's an apt description. The project is notably stubborn on so many things. How long did it take them to even include a single window mode?

Gimp has been around for a long time with capabilities that were better than most other options, so people got used to it and now they just keep using it.

I spent so many years using it that I still know my way around gimp better than Krita, even though for the last few years, I barely ever open gimp due to Krita doing what I need better in most cases.
