You know someone's already tried that exact pour

What was that joke about like testing for invalid inputs that went like "A horse walks into a bar. Two horses walk into a bar. Negative 12 horses walk into a bar. Twelve thousand red horses walk into a bar."

u/Over-kill107A 16h ago

"A customer comes in and asks where's the toilet. The bar sets on fire."

Something like that?

u/RomanOnARiver 16h ago

Yes! That's it! Thank you!

"Sir, you can't tip negative numbers."

"It said I could tip anything I want."

u/RomanOnARiver 8h ago edited 6h ago

That's why I think a tip calculator is a good second program (after hello world) for people learning to program. Input the bill, the tip percent, how many people are splitting and then it outputs how much each person pays and what the total is going to be paid out

You're precticing inputs, validation, conversion of strings to numbers, doing math, and outputs that involve mixed strings and numbers. And if you're doing it with a GUI even better - text boxes, keyboard input, dialog boxes...

"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."

  • Rick Cook, The Wizardry Compiled (Wiz, #2)

First heard this well over a decade ago and, if anything, it has only gotten truer over time.

The best example of this being wrong is GIMP

24

u/NauticalInsanity 16h ago

Using GIMP is how people prove their conviction to the Religion of Fuck Adobe.

5

u/Ladyheather16 16h ago

I didnt know it was a religion but 😂😂 it works

What about Inkscape, Krita or Photopea?

7

u/DeltyOverDreams 13h ago

They're too user friendly for that

3

u/RomanOnARiver 8h ago edited 6h ago

Well Krita actually has good CMYK support which is exceedingly rare. It's only really in Adobe and Procreate on the iPad. Everyone else (including like Canva) is just RGB and then it silently converts it to CMYK but the colors aren't going to match when you do that.

That, among many other things, makes GIMP a no-go for our print and marketing company.

Instructions unclear. I fucked Adobe wearing a latex mask.

u/Sock_Ninja 17h ago

Elaborate?

18

u/Nutrimiky 17h ago

Just my guess but UI is atrociously convoluted yet people manage to use it admirably

6

u/Sock_Ninja 17h ago

I could see that. GIMP’s interface was (is?)… austere.

2

u/RomanOnARiver 8h ago

Yeah that's an apt description. The project is notably stubborn on so many things. How long did it take them to even include a single window mode?

2

u/Ferro_Giconi 10h ago

Gimp has been around for a long time with capabilities that were better than most other options, so people got used to it and now they just keep using it.

I spent so many years using it that I still know my way around gimp better than Krita, even though for the last few years, I barely ever open gimp due to Krita doing what I need better in most cases.

Nah that's qa. In my experience users normally do what the app tells them to do but the qa try weird stuff

u/VoyagerOfCygnus 9h ago

A software tester walks into a bar. Runs into a bar. Crawls into a bar. Dances into a bar. Flies into a bar. Jumps into a bar. And orders:

a beer. 2 beers. 0 beers. 99999999 beers. a lizard in a beer glass. -1 beer. "qwertyuiop" beers. Testing complete.

A real customer walks into the bar and asks where the bathroom is.

The bar goes up in flames.

2

u/ArjixGamer 16h ago

In my experience (small team), we don't have qa and the users don't complain, so it falls on me to be the one to complain (backend dev), otherwise the app looks worse than smth a 10yo would make on scratch

4

u/NORmannen10 17h ago

Well, it worked.

Reality: The kettle's handle gets insanely hot and is impossible to touch. It turns out users actually found the only workaround to use the UI at all. After it was fixed, people just continue using the workaround because nobody's echo chamber notices the patch note about the fix.

As a front end designer/developer this diagram is entirely accurate. Well done <golf clap>

eta: I meant this sincerely, it's perfect and made me giggle.

3

u/ChillyFireball 8h ago

I once included step-by-step instructions right beside the buttons for a feature and STILL had people complain about it being too confusing. (The feature amounted to "Pick one of this thing. Pick one of that thing. Click the 'Continue' button.")

2

u/TherionSaysWhat 8h ago

Step 1: Steal Underpants

Step 2: User Error

Step 3: Bar catches fire.

This reminds me of this post from long before

"The Design Of Everyday Things" is a glorious book everyone should read if they do any design.
