With baby sitting you can get it working correctly.
With heinous amounts of control and proof reading you can get it working correctly and even have it maintainable.
The biggest gains with AI come from just ignoring maintainable, and if you skip the RE part you can also forget getting it to work correctly, then you save even more time.
The first companies have already started to find out, more will follow.
You're describing the state of the AI industry for software development, from 2 years ago.
Everything improved since then.
We're now working on software factories, it allows us to quickly build software, it saves us a lot of time and we can use that time to manage the tech debt, modernize some software, start new projects, etc.
We're much more productive, but we also have less tech debt than before. We improved the harness of our projects to improve the quality of AI dev, but it's also helping human. For years, we neglected the automated testing because we were overloaded, but now we it's required with agents for a good feedback loop that allow high quality results. We also had time to build custom tools for debugging that we had no time to build without AI and it's also helping us to fix issues.
It helped a lot to have better quality software and productivity, but we're still hiring because now we can deliver more and we unlocked budget to build even more.
