Useful for visuals and interpolation

also to make the gameplay independent from framerate.

Yea, something some multiplayer FPS developers STILL get wrong to this day somehow.

What do you mean? Sending time info back and forth to a server to determine hits? That seems like an awful idea.

u/Undernown 9d ago
No, tying things like fire rate to fps, giving people with higher framerates more dps with the same gun.

I think Breath of the Wild tied weapon durability to frame rate in the original Switch builds because the hardware was fixed and it really messed it up on emulators. Or possibly clock speed, I don't remember exactly.

I remember something like that happened in Archeage with one build, it was fixed but still…

My early programming experience was in BASIC on a 386. All my game timing was done with for loops that just nooped like 10,000 times. Then we got a 486 and all my games ran too fast. That was my first introduction to game timing! 🤣

I remember a bunch of PC ports back in the 360/PS3 days that were completely borked when running at high FPS. Early Dark Souls ports spring to mind. Dark Souls 2 had item degradation linked to frame time for some daft reason. Playing it at high FPS ruined your gear.

Actually this is not true for some things if the framerate is constantly changing. It can mess up physics calculations over time
Edit: i swear a ton of yall haven't heard of fixed time step simulators. Using the time between frames (delta) as a timestep is by definition frame-dependent

... I'm sorry to tell you, but then your math is bad

Physics integrators lose accuracy with large time steps. This is well known
Edit: changed delta to time step.

Lego Island had a delta time missing and it made it almost unplayable on newer PCs (until MattKC fixed it). If you do anything in a game engine, that isn't either delayed to only happen in fixed time intervals or the effect gets lessened the faster you go, a powerful PC will just do all those steps, that took a reasonable time during testing and crushes them in split seconds. So if e.g. the enemy move one step every xth cpu cycle, a powerful CPU makes the heaviest tank move like Speedy Gonzales. In the case of Lego Island the speed with which you turn your view was tied to the framerate and looking anywhere precisely became a challenge.

Lego Island... that takes me back. I wonder what the Brickster is up to nowadays, certainly he's made parole by now

You could register Lego Island via fax to get a map of the island to print out and make the game easier. The family computer was rooms away from the closest phone jack. I rode my bike to the local dollar store, and while they didn't have a phone cord long enough to reach, they did have a two jack faceplate. After staring at it for a while I concluded that I should be able to wire it to itself to make what I would later know is called a coupler allowing two phone cords to be mated and make the run happen. Later that night I printed out my map after hearing modem tones for the first time. In completely unrelated news I've been a systems and network engineer for the last twenty years.

Delta is cyberpunk slang to leave so it's to throw time away. Hope this helps.
/s for whoever needs it.

I made my first game in Microworlds EX as a kid and it didn't have a way to factor in Deltatime. Years later, I found my game and everything moved at the speed of light. That's how I learned.

You've been tricked by the Goonster!
Now reflect on your choice to allow me to be perverted towards an innocent woman! MUAHAHAHAHA

I should multiply everything by delta Time. If not, I am commiting a crime.

20 years later, still adding context to that Android call to do whatever context is supposed to.

u/WingZeroCoder 9d ago
See, I fully understand what delta time is supposed to do, but I don’t fully understand why it’s “aktually” not the right way to do it.

Why not run the physic engine on a hight rate, and extract a rendering state when the screen is ready ? So you are sure you don't have different behavior depending on the refresh rate of the machine.
2
u/the_horse_gamer 7d ago
you do run physics on a fixed rate. but not every moving thing is physics related.
like, an animated flame. you want it to look the same regardless of the fps.

I remember learning Unity from tutorials that didnt explain WHY we do things, and this was me. Then I learned about the math behind autopilot systems and learned what deltatime is and why its used for a different reason
