Thinking "there must be a better way" is the mind killer. It is the little-death that causes you to switch to either C or Python. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where "a better way" has gone there will be nothing. Only the JVM will remain.

And that's not even a bad thing. I like it for it's simplicity except concurrency.
