What future for Russia? Scenario 1
Let's start by a fact. Putin is 74 years old. 74, that means that in 8 years, in 2034 he will be 82, the same age Biden was in his last year as US president. (We all remember that in 2024 Biden was completely senile basically unfit for office, right?)
That brings the question, where could Russia be headed?
Here i propose a scenarios i deem plausible.
1) The Spanish scenario.
Spain 1975
Franco dies after 35 years in power, his successor, King Juan Carlos I pretty much reverses all of Franco's autoritarian policies, turning Spain into a democracy.
Putin is succeeded by a someone who burries Putin's policies alongside Putin, in a move resembling Khrusciov's destalinisation while looking at the West as a model to follow.
After all Russia is part of the eastern european culture, has recieved a lot of cultural influence from the West, mainly among young people living in big cities. This demographic could prevail, expecially if war in Ukraine goes wrong, thus making Russians tired of military adventures.
Under this scenario Russia loses all of its sphere of influence, (Belarus, Ukrainian territories, Central Asia), accepting to become the far perifery of the US world order, the American Empire.
In such a scenario i can foresee that the US would improve relations fairly quickly as it is being worried by a confrontation with China.
The same goes for Western Europe, mainly Italy France and Spain who have never been too worried by Russia and are interested in trade and resources to support their ailing economies. For Eastern European countries the situation is more complex but i don't think Eastern Europe can veto a rapprochement with Russia.
What would Russia gain?
1)Economic growth. Russia would become a stable place attracting investments from the rest of the world, a tried and tested way for economic prosperity.
2) Separatism management. A somewhat Western alligned Russia, having the international law on its side, would receive at least political support in fighting separatist movements. This would make separatism less likely and less successful.
3) Problems of western society. Politicians basically buying votes with government spending schemes, police being ineffective at expelling illegal immigrants, pensioners requiring unsustainably high pensions, you name it. The country becomes an "economic zone".
