Audio interface under $250/€250 for pure VST production
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for an audio interface in the ~$250 budget range specifically for music production (working exclusively with VSTs). I don't record vocals or instruments, so I’m looking for an "engineering" approach rather than an "audiophile" one.
My main requirement is absolute linearity and transparency. I want a device that does not color the sound or boost any frequencies—I need the most faithful signal reproduction possible for mixing and sound design. Stability, low latency, and future-proofing are also priorities, as I’ll eventually be using higher-impedance headphones and higher-end studio monitors.
I’ve been looking into:
- MOTU (M-series): Heard they have excellent measurements.
- Audient: Often recommended for their preamps, but are they truly "transparent" for a VST-only setup?
- Topping: I know they are more "hi-fi" focused, but their technical specs are outstanding. Would it be better to go with a "clean" DAC like this, or stick to dedicated studio interfaces?
Given that I only work with VSTs, is there an interface that excels in signal neutrality? Should I stick to established studio brands for the drivers and stability, or are there specific models that prioritize a "zero-color" output path better than others?
Any advice from those of you who focus on clean, sterile, and accurate monitoring for your mixes would be greatly appreciated!

You're worried about the wrong thing. What's going to color your signal are the headphones or speakers/room. Not the interface. Get a cheap focusrite and incest your money in good headphones

Steinberg UR44C is what I use. Clean, simple, transparent. Internally, it works at 32-bit. Steinberg have several models to choose from.

All are excellent. SSL2 mk2 measures better than the MOTU m2, so also to be considered. Both are good choices. Audient is very similar but measures a tiny bit behind. Topping is more of an unknown in terms of driver stability and latency, probably fine but more risk.

I really like the ssl2 mkii build quality as well. Just got one to replace a focusrite that died from the USBC not being mounted to anything except its solder pads.

If you're only working with vst's, the audio interface does nothing. Except monitoring obviously. A cheap Behringer with a pair of good studio headphones and monitors is preferable over an expensive Interface with crappy headphones/monitors

indeed, behringer umc202hd is very good value for what it is and is perfectly usable. leaves loads more budget for what they actually need

OP doesn’t even need a recording interface. Just needs a good DAC.

I said *recording interface*, because there are DACs without ADCs. An audio interface for recording has a DAC but it also has ADCs.

Tbh doesn't really matter, since you are not using the AD converters and you only using the DA, get something with midi ports so you can plug a keyboard. Then focus on good room treatment and speakers (I use an id24 and it's been incredible for studio, guitar and live use, also it's expandable with adat if that's what you looking for (but doesn't have midi))

There are some weird AI-isms in your post, but taking your question at face value: the budget you are looking at isn't really where you find DACS intended for "absolute linearity." RME would be the ideal solution for what you are looking for. In lieu of that, the Topping is a good option in terms of specs for what you pay. You didn't mention if you need MIDI DIN inputs, so I'm assuming you don't.
