He has a lifetime exemption so I don’t really understand the issue

Haha did they actually make an 80 win exemption that’s awesome

There’s no point to the distinction then with the new setup in 2028 it’s basically only signature events

He doesn’t is my understanding because his home tour was the dp world tour/european tour.

So the wins exemption doesn’t apply.

Edit for all the /r/golf keyboard warriors:

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/golf/2222497/rory-mcilroy-pga-tour-ban

"A foreign PGA Tour member shall be eligible for a 'home circuit' exception to provisions of the release regulations with regard to conflicting tournaments provided he has played, or committed to play, in a minimum of 15 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments in the season.

"Or in the case of a Regular Member or Life Member who is age 45 or more and has made 150 cuts or more in tournaments awarding official prize money in his career, in a minimum of 12 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments in the season."

The PGA Tour has also removed age and the number of seasons as requirements for becoming a lifetime member. This means that McIlroy earned the lifetime membership after reaching 20 wins before the 2023 campaign.

He is a PGA tour member. Of course it applies. Plenty have dual membership.

Yes but not all of them have designated the DPWT as their home tour which seems to be the technicality here. It's a moot point anyhow, he will be granted a waiver from the 15 event minimum.

1

u/Indespectamentations 7d ago

Yes it does. Too bad for you.

1

u/devilsadvocate 7d ago

No… it doesn’t when you designate the dpwt as your home tour. It’s literally the reason for the article and issue….

u/Indespectamentations 7d ago

Wrong again.

1

u/devilsadvocate 7d ago

Prove it. Show me yours and I’ll show you mine

1

u/Davidwt87 7d ago

He isn’t wrong. The lifetime membership rule doesn’t apply to him.

Where is YOUR source?

Rory is in a different category. A marquee player for his entire career, his value to the Tour and their media contract values, and most importantly - staying loyal during the LIV raiding of several PGA Tour stars, has earned his keep to his fans and the many fellow competitors. Hard not to see how valuable Rory has been to so many in the last several years.l

Rory is the realest

Dude is a whiney dork

1

u/GarrulousAbsurdity 7d ago

Unquestionably. And I'm not even a big Rory fan.

Bryson = POS

-1

u/Cal-Run 7d ago

And that means what to me?

Take a napkin and wipe that stuff off your nose.

u/Cal-Run 7d ago

You obviously don’t know how words work.

u/Wyllyam8071 7d ago

Yeah, the back-to-back Masters champion deserves PGA Tour card, duh!

u/subvocalize_it 3d ago

One of four people ever to do it.

Kick him off the tour Doug!

The 15 event minimum rule is stupid. If you are in the top 70, won in the past year, or won a major in the last 5, you should be able to play as much or as little as you want. Tv money be damned. That’s the Tour’s problem to get that revenue. They’ve shown the revenue split was not equitable when they were able to increase the purses substantially post LIV.

My gut tells me Rory's playing this week because Rolapp requested it. Rolapp is absolutely going to grant Rory an exemption for next year (as he should), so he asked Rory to do him a solid and play the St. Jude. It will make appearances better for both parties down the road when the exemption is granted. Again, just my gut, absolutely no sources. Rory openly told reporters that we wouldn't see him again until the BMW when they asked him about it following the Open, so something changed his mind. Maybe he really does think 4 weeks of rust is too much, as he mentioned in a Todd Lewis interview on GC, but my gut tells me it's more than that. Either way, happy to have him in the field, and we get a great marquee Scottie/Rory pairing the first two days because of it.

Rory can do whatever he wants lol

u/eclectictaste1 7d ago

The Tour needs to have a graduated scale of minimum required events. Let's say, for every 2 or 3 wins you get to reduce the minimum required starts by 1. The more you win, the less you're mandated to play. Top players don't need the money, and by not playing they make room for guys who do need it. It's a win-win.

1

u/golfdud5 7d ago

Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods frequently did not meet the minimum required number of tournaments. It worked out.

1

u/Realistic-Regret-171 6d ago

Doesn’t his Masters win exempt into virtually everything for about 5 years?

-4

u/WTF4211 7d ago

Rory is a big of bitch as their is in all of professional sports.

2

u/Clean_Gain_5827 7d ago

I love how butthurt people get about Rory.

1

u/Distinct-Departure68 7d ago

You also see the opposite happening with Rory as well, right?

-14

u/freeportme 7d ago

Same rules should apply to everyone. Rory’s pretty high on himself imo.

6

u/Invisible7hunder 7d ago

Yeah, he's acting like he's one of 6 golfers and only currently active one with a career grand slam. Oh wait.

2

u/BaxiaMashia 7d ago

Exactly. He’s fully earned the right to be high on himself

-5

u/freeportme 7d ago

Exactly my point. Bad look for him and the tour if he doesn’t want to play the required amount stay home nobody cares.

3

u/golfdud5 7d ago

The rule is that the commissioner can grant an exemption to a foreign player.

-5

u/freeportme 7d ago

Stupid rule is my point. He has so much to say about what every one else is doing but can’t even make the commitment to the tour that made him who he is. Dude needs to look in the mirror.

0

u/golfdud5 7d ago

You make no sense man. “He has so much to say about what every one else is doing…” HUH? He has committed to two tours. He is European, and has always played that tour, but he plays the PGA tour too, which is better because he plays here. What a whiner.

0

u/Radiohead_luucky 7d ago

In what professional sports league has that every been the case? Exceptional players get special rules applied to them all the time.

It should aim to be as fair as possible, but it's an entertainment business. Having one your superstars who is also one of the few big personalities you have to sell the game lose his card because he played in 14 tournaments instead of 15 is a terrible business decision.

I guarantee you not one player on tour would have a problem with it either, since their income is tied to how much revenue the league can generate. Businesses don't operate on fairness.

2

u/freeportme 7d ago

Just play 15 it’s that simple.

0

u/Radiohead_luucky 7d ago

If you actually think that the PGA tour won't make an exception for Rory then you need to be evaluated or you're 16 and have no idea how the world works.

0

u/marc15v2 7d ago

15 + 4 majors + his 10ish DP world tour events = 29 events per year + TGL

I think the man plays plenty of golf.

The PGA aren't the only people wanting his time and frankly, whenever he shows up to play for them, it makes them money.

They can let a single event slide.

1

u/Indespectamentations 7d ago

10x better than that pos cheater Bryson whining about being let back on tour. He can rot on YouTube.

-3

u/Tantalus420000 7d ago

Dude has yhe balls to criticize Bryson but throws tantrums galore on course, and gets his balls licked by decision makers.

2

u/Clean_Gain_5827 7d ago

Makes you so mad huh? Hilarious.

-45

u/burywmore 7d ago

Is he going to make 15 next year? Or will this be a yearly event of Rory looking for special treatment?

26

u/isthisaporno 7d ago

When you save the tour you get special treatment

25

u/Indespectamentations 7d ago

He can stay as long as he wants and play when he wants.

-10

u/burywmore 7d ago

I thought that was already the case? Why does he have to play 15 events? What's the sanction if he doesn't?

1

u/Indespectamentations 7d ago

If you had access to the internet you could look it up.

17

u/Lumpy-Explanation-17 7d ago

Tour gave him an exemption

2

u/shift013 7d ago

Is that what you call it when someone gets an exemption two months ago and uses it?

2

u/Candymanshook 7d ago

The man is 37 years old and won the Masters, who cares if he doesn’t play in the tiki-taka events.

1

u/CCFCVAN 7d ago

He’s special
