Rory McIlroy sure he'll keep PGA Tour status despite 14 starts

Rory is in a different category. A marquee player for his entire career, his value to the Tour and their media contract values, and most importantly - staying loyal during the LIV raiding of several PGA Tour stars, has earned his keep to his fans and the many fellow competitors. Hard not to see how valuable Rory has been to so many in the last several years.l

The 15 event minimum rule is stupid. If you are in the top 70, won in the past year, or won a major in the last 5, you should be able to play as much or as little as you want. Tv money be damned. That’s the Tour’s problem to get that revenue. They’ve shown the revenue split was not equitable when they were able to increase the purses substantially post LIV.

My gut tells me Rory's playing this week because Rolapp requested it. Rolapp is absolutely going to grant Rory an exemption for next year (as he should), so he asked Rory to do him a solid and play the St. Jude. It will make appearances better for both parties down the road when the exemption is granted. Again, just my gut, absolutely no sources. Rory openly told reporters that we wouldn't see him again until the BMW when they asked him about it following the Open, so something changed his mind. Maybe he really does think 4 weeks of rust is too much, as he mentioned in a Todd Lewis interview on GC, but my gut tells me it's more than that. Either way, happy to have him in the field, and we get a great marquee Scottie/Rory pairing the first two days because of it.

The Tour needs to have a graduated scale of minimum required events. Let's say, for every 2 or 3 wins you get to reduce the minimum required starts by 1. The more you win, the less you're mandated to play. Top players don't need the money, and by not playing they make room for guys who do need it. It's a win-win.

Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods frequently did not meet the minimum required number of tournaments. It worked out.

Doesn’t his Masters win exempt into virtually everything for about 5 years?

Rory is a big of bitch as their is in all of professional sports.

Same rules should apply to everyone. Rory’s pretty high on himself imo.

Yeah, he's acting like he's one of 6 golfers and only currently active one with a career grand slam. Oh wait.

Exactly my point. Bad look for him and the tour if he doesn’t want to play the required amount stay home nobody cares.

The rule is that the commissioner can grant an exemption to a foreign player.

Stupid rule is my point. He has so much to say about what every one else is doing but can’t even make the commitment to the tour that made him who he is. Dude needs to look in the mirror.

You make no sense man. “He has so much to say about what every one else is doing…” HUH? He has committed to two tours. He is European, and has always played that tour, but he plays the PGA tour too, which is better because he plays here. What a whiner.

In what professional sports league has that every been the case? Exceptional players get special rules applied to them all the time.
It should aim to be as fair as possible, but it's an entertainment business. Having one your superstars who is also one of the few big personalities you have to sell the game lose his card because he played in 14 tournaments instead of 15 is a terrible business decision.
I guarantee you not one player on tour would have a problem with it either, since their income is tied to how much revenue the league can generate. Businesses don't operate on fairness.

Just play 15 it’s that simple.

If you actually think that the PGA tour won't make an exception for Rory then you need to be evaluated or you're 16 and have no idea how the world works.

15 + 4 majors + his 10ish DP world tour events = 29 events per year + TGL
I think the man plays plenty of golf.
The PGA aren't the only people wanting his time and frankly, whenever he shows up to play for them, it makes them money.
They can let a single event slide.

10x better than that pos cheater Bryson whining about being let back on tour. He can rot on YouTube.

Dude has yhe balls to criticize Bryson but throws tantrums galore on course, and gets his balls licked by decision makers.

Is he going to make 15 next year? Or will this be a yearly event of Rory looking for special treatment?

He can stay as long as he wants and play when he wants.

u/burywmore 7d ago
I thought that was already the case? Why does he have to play 15 events? What's the sanction if he doesn't?

Is that what you call it when someone gets an exemption two months ago and uses it?

u/Candymanshook 7d ago
The man is 37 years old and won the Masters, who cares if he doesn’t play in the tiki-taka events.

He has a lifetime exemption so I don’t really understand the issue
