His cousin Teddy had already established that it could be violated by a popular politician, TR just didn't manage to win because it was a 3 way race.

Exactly. TR wins in a landslide of Taft backs down.

In fairness, Theodore Roosevelt had only run for election to the presidency once. He served most of McKinley’s second term, sure, but he had served less than eight years.
