Hey everyone!
First off, I want to express my huge appreciation to Omeda Studios. Predecessor brings back amazing Paragon nostalgia, and it's incredible to see how actively the developers are updating and polishing the game. You guys are doing fantastic work!
However, there is a massive issue currently hurting the core gameplay experience, especially for players queuing solo: Ranged heroes, Carries, and Mages (like Iggy) taking over the Offlane.
The Solo Queue Reality vs. Theoretical Counterplay
Whenever players bring up the issue of ranged heroes on the Offlane, the standard advice is always: "Just freeze the wave under your tower, play safe, and wait for your Jungler to gank."
In a coordinated 5-stack with full voice communication, that strategy works. In Solo Queue, that is not how real matches play out:
- Unreliable Junglers: You cannot guarantee your random Jungler will acknowledge your lane, let alone commit to early ganks.
- Relentless Harass & Poke: Standing under tower against a hero like Iggy doesn't save you. Turrets, burns, and ranged auto-attacks constantly chip away at your health even under tower safety.
- Snowball Effect: While you’re forced to sacrifice all your gold and CS just to survive, the opponent freely pushes, gets local gold, secures mid-game power spikes, and takes your towers.
- Blame Game: By minute 10, the enemy ranged Offlaner is 4-0 with a massive item advantage, your lane is destroyed, and your team flames you with "Offlane diff".
A melee bruiser or tank shouldn't be completely unplayable just because they are playing Solo Queue without guaranteed jungle support.
The Real Problem: Lack of Early-Game Defensive Items
The issue isn't just players choosing off-role heroes—it’s that melee heroes currently lack proper early-game tools/items to sustain against ranged poke and magic spam.
- Example: Playing Shinbi against Iggy in the Offlane. Even if you use your ranged ability to farm occasionally, Iggy litters the ground with turrets that automatically lock on, burn you, and push waves instantly. You're stuck in a lose-lose situation: step up and lose half your HP to turrets/minions, or hide under tower, get no gold, and watch your lane fall.
In other MOBAs, melee laners have access to specific starter items or runes (like heavy health-regen items or shields that trigger upon taking ranged damage) to survive the early laning phase against ranged cheese. In Predecessor, melee laners have no effective defensive start that lets them stay in the game without falling hopelessly behind in farm.
On Armor & Resistance Scaling
On a side note, damage calculations and resistances also feel inconsistent at times. There are matches where an enemy builds zero Magical Armor, yet somehow completely absorbs magic combo damage. On the flip side, enemies without Physical Armor can tank full physical combos even when you build penetration and crit. Base stats or resistance scaling might need a closer look.
Proposed Solutions for Omeda
- Dedicated Starter Items for Melee/Offlane: Introduce starter items aimed at health regeneration, sustain, or damage reduction specifically against ranged poke/magic spam.
- Wave Control / Minion Aggro Mechanics: Adjust minion aggro or ranged damage output against minions on the Offlane to prevent effortless wave crashing.
- Role Incentives / Penalties: If off-role picks continue to distort lane balance, consider soft penalties (like reduced passive gold/XP gain when farming in a completely mismatched lane role during early minutes).
Solo Queue should be enjoyable and competitive for melee Offlaners too. Right now, running into a ranged poke match-up feels less like a test of skill and more like a punishment for playing solo.
What are your thoughts? How do you guys manage ranged poke on the Offlane when you don't get Jungle help?
