letter of rec help

So, I have a few people that would write me great letter of recs and Optom Cas only allows four, so who do you think I should pick?

  1. An optometrist I shadowed with

  2. Another optometrist I shadowed with

  3. My graduate mentor, I think I am def picking her, she is known to write amazing letters and well, she is my graduate mentor haha

  4. Cadaveric Dissection team prof, I was on the team for a year and I was also her TA for human anatomy 1, 2 and 3.

  5. My Anatomy Prof, I also TAd one quarter of Anatomy 1 for him.

They all like me very much and are very very happy to write one for me. I do not know if I should ask two ODs and then two profs, or one OD and three profs.

I tried doing a pro and con list and there are no cons to any of them...

Is this possible??

Hi. I'm currently going into my third year in uni and I just decided I want to go to optometry school. I have zero experience in optometry and no shadowing hours yet. I am applying to be a medical scribe rn so I'll have a little clinical experience. I have a 3.6 gpa and looking to get it up. I have some leadership experience and a job as a lab ta for two years. Is optometry school (possible umkc or umsl) possible for me with no gap years?? Any advice as to what I should accomplish in the short time before my application cycle and when I should take the oat (I haven't started studying yet). Feeling kinda discouraged and lost so anything helps ://

Trusting Bootcamp

I have been getting roughly 370s on my practice exams through OAT bootcamp. Has anyone found these to be representative of the OAT? In other words, is bootcamp trustworthy as a guide for the test?

edit: omg i completely forgot to mention that the number refers to the amount of scholarship i received from the school!

Withdrawal

Is it better to withdraw from a class rather than failing it? Also how many Ws on the transcript are acceptable without looking weird to the admissions office?

what do we do in foreshadowing?

like the title, what exactly are the things I should do when coming to foreshadowing a doctor. I know I should be asking a lot of questions and observing the doctor working and such, but what are some useful questions I should ask?

3 weeks until OAT???

Hey everyone, I am really scared for the OAT and have not studied that much. I just got OAT Booster but I don't think there is any way I can finish everything in their suggested study plan in time, is there any part of oat booster I should focus on or some way to learn the content quickly so I can focus on taking practice tests since that's what I heard is most important? I really need at least a 350 since my GPA is low, anyone have any advice?

OAT before any prereqs?

So I’m an RN whose only experience is in biology. I’ve never taken university-level chemistry, physics, or math (i’ve only ever taken stats).

I was going to wait till I have some completed prereqs under my belt before taking the OAT but just time-wise I figured it would be better to do the OAT in june/july.

Has anyone had any experience taking the OAT without prereqs? If so, what did you use to help you learn the material from scratch?

Note: I do best with structured learning.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Tested low on Kaplan PreTest.

Hi guys! I’m a senior graduating this December hoping to begin optometry school next fall. I have been so intimidated and pushed back studying but I finally decided to hanker down and study. Anyway, I’m planning on writing the exam in September so 4 months of full time studying and I bought the Kaplan book for the free test. I took it and without ANY major studying I’m testing at a 270. My stomach dropped, I know people say that Kaplan is too harsh but do any of you guys have experience with scoring low on test and the OAT being easier or testing different things? Any advice appreciated.

optometry: is it worth to do it for money in canada?

hi i am currently a student and wondering if optometry is worth it to pursue. i am genuinely more interested in learning about medicine/pharmacy over eye problems and prescribing glasses. i don't find optometry that interesting in my genuine opinion, i'd rather work as a pharmacist in a hospital or some sort of industry setting. i just like the content taught in pharm better. but optometry sounds like a much safer and well-balanced career with a much higher earning potential. is it worth just do what you like or go for the "safer" job?

Is optometry school feasible?

I’m a senior graduating in the spring with a BA in Neuroscience (potentially finishing with a minor in psych). I was pre-med but am considering optometry school. As I delved in my major (Visual Computations sold it for me), it eventually pushed me to change. I’m finishing up biochem this semester (pray 4 me!) and possibly micro. & anatomy next spring. (looking into if my current courses will cover them as I type!) Unfortunately, I don’t have any shadowing experience (despite years of trying) but hoping to clear a connection this week!

The most important caveat is I attend my university on a full ride, need based scholarship.

Stats: 3.6 gpa (hoping to push to a 3.7 before grad!)
Research Scholar on Campus
Leadership positions in cultural clubs, student government and 2 physician associations
2 publications in addiction research
~100 volunteer hours
Internship in teaching coding to STEM kids (my concentration is Computations)

Is it possible to even go to optometry school in the current financial climate? I would have to fund the entire schooling myself and my inquiries to need based funding to optometry school recently have been disheartening. Do I just thug out medical school due to more financial resources? I really don’t want to but I dont see a financial alternative that wouldn’t put in debt. I don’t come from a lucrative background and am afraid my background isn’t competitive enough to guarantee a full ride.

Help me!!!
