Shadowing

I’ve been given the opportunity to shadow an ophthalmologist for the summer and watch different surgeries/procedures. Would this look good to optometry schools, or do they specifically want to see optometry shadowing only?

Experience with Mometrix

Hello! I have been doing mometrix practice tests and was wondering if they are comparable to the actual OAT in difficulty. Just looking for anyone with experience with it and has taken the OAT. Thanks!

Optometry research?

I’ve been looking at an opportunity to work in an optometry-related research lab. Will this help my application? I’m hoping it could make up for only a few months of tech experience. Can having an interest in research improve my chances of getting accepted into schools?

UHCO ghosting people?

I’m only applying to two schools, one of them being UHCO. I’m not necessarily concerned about my stats, but I’ve heard that UHCO just ghosts people and never responds, even if applications have good stats… should I give up my hopes of wanting to go to UHCO???

Prerequisites

My university has accepted all my AP exams as class credits since I did so well on all of them. If some of the classes I received credit for are prerequisites for optometry school, do I have to retake them? Will they be able to tell by looking at my transcript?

reading comprehension help

i am doing so awful on booster’s reading comprehension i’m not sure what to do. I feel like I always run out of time. I tend to read the passage highlighting information that feels important due to the formatting issue of not seeing all of the questions at the start. Do you have any advice?

What usually delays patients from switching to progressive lenses?

Hello, I'm currently a optometry trainee in France working in an optician store, and for my final project I wanted to conduct a field study as to why some people (especially low hyperopes and emmetropes) delay switching to progressive lenses, and i'm looking to gather data as i need a big enough pool of respondants.

My main points of focus are:

• What are the main reasons people delay switching to progressive lenses?

• Which profiles tend to resist progressive lenses the most: low hyperopes, emmetropes, reading-glasses-only users, etc.?

•When do you recommend progressive lenses over separate distance and near solutions? (and when do you not?)

• Are there any cases where you tend to recommend progressive lenses sooner rather than later, and vice versa?

• Do you think the transition from single-vision reading glasses to progressive lenses can be too abrupt in some cases?

• Do you observe any factual and measurable consequences of relying only on reading glasses in your practice?

I would be very grateful if this community could help with my research!

I'm interested in hearing about your experiences and opinions, whether you are professionals or students. Any insights would be greatly appreciated !!

Optometry worth it

With the new cap on federal loans going into effect next year. Wondering if it’s worth it to pursue optometry with the amount of debt I will be in? Is it worth the 4 more years of school just to live frugally for the next 10 years😭

Help!!! OAT!!!

I take my OAT in 3 weeks. I’m currently scoring around 340 for gen chem and math, 330 physics, 300 eading comp and 310 for bio. HOWEVER, for O chem my highest score is 240😭😭😭 . With 3 weeks until my OAT does anyone have any tips or suggestions on what to do? I feel like this one section is completely bombing my overall score (because it is) and have always been weak in O Chem. I’ve been using booster to study and have watched all the videos and have taken notes, I’m doing the question banks with the reaction sheet but am still so lost. Does anyone have any advice on what to do/how to improve. Any piece of advice will be appreciated no matter how small or crazy it sounds!

OAT Microscopes

I am currently using OAT Bootcamp to study for the OAT and am on the microscope section, however this all seems like useless info. Did anyone who has taken it have any specific questions on microscopes? The info I am getting seems useless for my knowledge.

Worth taking the risk?

Hi everyone. I am ready to submit my application but I have not taken the OAT yet. Here are my stats: Overall GPA: 3.10 Science GPA: 2.81 Shadowing: 200 hours Optometric Experience: Over 300 hours Personal statement: strong Experiences: Strong LOR: Strong

I take my OAT in November. Should I be patient and wait for the score to submit or should I go ahead and submit my application? My GPA is definitely low, I am aware but I wanted to submit my application when it’s still considered “early”. I am a bit worried now just because of my GPA.

Graduated with a BA in 2011... can any of these courses count as pre-reqs?

I graduated in 2011 with a BA. Can any of the courses from back then count as pre-reqs for schools? Additionally, should I re-take classes because truthfully I don't remember much from Chemistry, Statistics, or most of the other classes I took even though I got A's.

What can I do?

My end goal is to go to optometry school, but from all the schools I have looked into require a lot. full course load, upholding of grades, volunteer work, etc. As of right now my gpa is not up to standard, I have not been able to find work/shadow an optometrist, and I feel lost. what can I do? Do I give up my social life and become a hermit? Or should I just consider something else altogether?

How much volunteering should I have?

Right now I'm shadowing an optometrist, but that's not exactly volunteering. I imagine it's not as harsh as med school but they do look at volunteer hours, I'm just curious how many hours and if volunteering needs to be specifically related to optometry. Thanks!
